It looks like there is a change as most stations are airing the "B" show that has been aired three times. What stations are airing the "A" show this weekend that has not aired yet?

I guess KZOY is playing the A show and Casey plays the Spanglish mix of "Anything for you" by the Miami Sound Machine.

It looks like there is a change as most stations are airing the "B" show that has been aired three times. What stations are airing the "A" show this weekend that has not aired yet? Hi, you are better off tracking A/B show choices on the AT40 Proboard: at40fg.proboards.com/ :) As for this week's (A show) survey - WCRZ edition this week, which (as is usually the case) means no extras included. May 7, 1988 40 29 Richard Marx - Endless Summer Nights (2) 39 -- Pretty Poison - Nighttime (36) 38 39 Dan Reed Network - Ritual (38)37 -- Glass Tiger - I'm Still Searching (31) 36 -- Debbie Gibson - Foolish Beat (1) 35 -- Brenda K. Starr - I Still Believe (13) 34 24 The Jets - Rocket 2 U (6) LDD: Simon & Garfunkel "Bridge Over Troubled Water" from Sonya in Rhode Island to her mother in appreciation of all that she did as a mother, especially seeing as she did it all as a single mother, which is what Sonya is now doing with her own daughters33 -- The Jets - Make it Real (4) 32 40 Cher - We All Sleep Alone (14) 31 19 Michael Jackson - Man in the Mirror (1) 30 -- Belinda Carlisle - Circle in the Sand (7) 29 35 Paul Carrack - One Good Reason (28) 28 34 Times Two - Strange But True (21) 27 28 Jermaine Stewart - Say it Again (27)26 30 Suave - My Girl (20) 25 36 Rick Astley - Together Forever (1)24 26 Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Dreaming (16) 23 20 Henry Lee Summer - I Wish I Had a Girl (20) 22 23 Toto - Pamela (22)21 27 Hall & Oates - Everything Your Heart Desires (3) 20 09 Tiffany - I Saw Him Standing There (7) 19 14 Bruce Springsteen - One Step Up (13) 18 21 Brenda Russell featuring Joe Esposito - Piano in the Dark (6) 17 10 Pebbles - Girlfriend (5) 16 18 The Deele - Two Occasions (10) 15 06 Billy Ocean - Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car (1) 14 22 George Michael - One More Try (1) 13 17 White Lion - Wait (8) 12 04 INXS - Devil Inside (2) 11 16 Foreigner - I Don't Want to Live Without You (5) 10 13 Samantha Fox - Naughty Girls (Need Love Too) (3) 09 12 Icehouse - Electric Blue (7) 08 15 Johnny Hates Jazz - Shattered Dreams (2) LDD: Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram "Somewhere Out There" from Kelly to the son she gave up for adoption ten years ago, when she became pregnant at 16 and was abandoned by the boy's 19-year-old father, hoping that he is loved today07 08 Taylor Dayne - Prove Your Love (7)06 11 The Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind (4) 05 07 Natalie Cole - Pink Cadillac (5)04 01 Whitney Houston - Where Do Broken Hearts Go (1) 03 03 Aerosmith - Angel (3)02 05 Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - Anything For You (1) 01 02 Terence Trent D'Arby - Wishing Well (1)We have six songs debuting this week on American Top 40, so six songs fall out of the survey. And the droppers are: "I Want Her" (LW: 38), "You Don't Know" (LW: 37), "Out of the Blue" (LW: 33), "Fishnet" (LW: 32), "Kiss and Tell" (LW: 31), and "Some Kind of Lover" (LW: 25). NOTES: - And the countdown to the end begins...this week sees the debut of "Foolish Beat" by Debbie Gibson, which is the first song to appear that's still in The 40 on the last week of Casey's first run (August 6).
- TIME CAPSULE: Casey points out that Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon finally fell off the 200-position album chart (not yet called The Billboard 200) the week before.
- No softer jingle this week - not even for "Make it Real" or "Man in the Mirror". Speaking of which, the former's intro was rather unusual; the song started right away, then Casey began talking over it, and the #33 jingle followed.
- And speaking of unusual things, that third hour saw something VERY odd happen - the third, fourth, and fifth original segments from the show were all bumpered together, instead of the fifth being bumpered with the sixth. This same thing happened with the second hour back on 10-12-85, but in that case both the third and fourth segments were just one song. This time, only the fourth segment was a solo act (#15) - the third had both 17 and 16, and the fifth had 14 + 13.
One Two more from the "Deja Vu" files: 1) There was a droppiece of Laid Back's "White Horse", in case you missed it last week. ;) 2) "Somewhere Out There" being used as a LDD for teenage parents giving a child up for adoption; this also happened back on 11-21-87.- No spoiler for the new #1 song this week.
- Another week with the Spanish-English version of "Anything For You" played.
- #1 on the Album chart: Soundtrack to Dirty Dancing
- #1 on the Country chart: "Cry, Cry, Cry" by Highway 101
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Adventure" by Eleanor
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "Nite and Day" by Al B. Sure!

(25)24 30 The Charlie Daniels Band - Still in Saigon (22) 23 12 Bertie Higgins - Key Largo (8) Flashback Extra: The Dazz Band "Let it Whip"22 28 The Little River Band - Man on Your Mind (14) 21 26 Dan Fogelberg - Run For the Roses (18) 20 22 The Rolling Stones - Hang Fire (20)19 23 Elton John - Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny) (13) 18 07 Huey Lewis & The News - Do You Believe in Love (7) 17 17 Greg Guidry - Goin' Down (17)16 21 The Human League - Don't You Want Me (1) 15 20 Asia - Heat of the Moment (4) 14 16 Willie Nelson - Always on My Mind (5) AT40 Extra: Diana Ross "Upside Down"13 15 Ray Parker Jr. - The Other Woman (4) 12 14 The Beatles - The Beatles Movie Medley (12)Flashback Extra: Queen "Body Language", which was "a week away from reaching the countdown"11 13 Kool & The Gang - Get Down on It (10) 10 11 Hall & Oates - Did it in a Minute (9) 09 10 Charlene - I've Never Been to Me (3) 08 09 Paul Davis - '65 Love Affair (6) 07 06 The Go-Gos - We Got the Beat (2) 06 08 Tommy Tutone - 867-5309/Jenny (4) LDD: Jimmy Dean "I.O.U." from Bob in memory of his mother, who recently passed away while he was stationed in Germany - she had a drinking problem during most of while he grew up; that, and learning from his grandmother more about her after she died, makes him wish that she could've been a better mother05 04 The J. Geils Band - Freeze Frame (4) 04 05 Rick Springfield - Don't Talk to Strangers (2) Flashback Extra: John Cougar "Hurts So Good"03 01 Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock & Roll (1) 02 03 Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder - Ebony and Ivory (1) 01 02 Vangelis - Chariots of Fire (1)NOTES: - Casey noted that "Rosanna" leaped from 59 up to break into the countdown at 38.
- Story behind "Hanky Panky" as an Extra: It was originally released in 1961 as Tommy James's first single. But, it flopped. Then, a DJ in Pittsburgh noticed the record collecting dust, and randomly decided to start playing it. It quickly drew attention, which spread to other stations, ultimately leading to the song setting the record for the longest time between first release and hitting #1.
- Kind of funny that this week follows 5-7-88, for two reasons. 1) "Deja Vu" files: Back-to-back "Always on My Mind" for the second straight year. 2) Last week we heard about how the album with the longest run on the album chart had now finally fallen off the chart. This week, we've gone back to a time before that album had the record! At this point, it still belonged to Johnny's Greatest Hits, by Johnny Mathis. When did Pink Floyd assume that mantle? Well...check this space next week for the answer! :)
- Story behind "Upside Down" as an Extra: Casey ranks the Top 3 females so far during the 80s, with the top female's first (and as it turns out, only) #1 in the 80s.
- Is it me, or did " '65 Love Affair" have extremely low-quality MP3 audio used? It made me think of listening to an audio clip whose bitrate was set down to 64 or 96 Kbps.
- The second LDD was at once both very heartfelt (it's a Mother's Day LDD) and very unusual; it's a spoken-word record that's close to six minutes long. It's also from 1976, for that matter, which is also featured this weekend - it would debut the week after this, spending the next four weeks on the Hot 100 (including two in The 40!).
- #1 on the Soul chart: "If it Ain't One Thing, It's Another" by Richard "Dimples" Fields
- #1 on the Album chart: Chariots of Fire by Vangelis
- #1 on the Country chart: "Always on My Mind"

Falling out are: "I Do What I Do" by John Taylor (LW: 39), "Tender Love" by The Force MDs (LW: 38), "Feel it Again" by Honeymoon Suite (LW: 34), and "I Think It's Love" by Jermaine Jackson (LW: 29). NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WGHN.
- "Who's Johnny?", of all songs, received the softer jingle - the re-recorded soft #40 at that.
- This is the first show I've heard - and quite possibly only one there is! - where a song is a LDD the week it debuts in the countdown.
- So, two weeks ago we were told that Dark Side of the Moon had finally fallen off the album chart. Last week, we jumped back to a time before that album held the record for the longest run on the album chart, and learned what the previous recordholder was. I also mentioned to check this space this week to find out when it became the recordholder - that, was the week of October 29, 1983.
- The story behind "Money" as an Extra, struck me as not too far removed from a LDD - a listener requested "Money" in order to honor the long time that Pink Floyd had spent on the album chart. Casey opted to hold it off for several months until this week marked them having spent 12 years on the chart.
- Incidentally, two of these three weeks have also featured references to Whitney Houston's own chart record - two weeks ago saw the last of her streak fall out of #1, while this week, as Casey would tell us, she became the first woman to even have three in a row.
- "Stand By Me" was spliced in from an unknown show; I have no idea which show they could have pulled it from. It would have been better to simply have Larry Morgan voice the extra so he could at least explain its purpose (in his memory, no doubt) - rather than go the lazy route and simply use the same exact clip for both this and the 1971 show (in which the song's presence is confusing enough as it is!).
- Kind of a funny footnote to the second LDD: Before playing the song, Casey gave an update - just a few hours before the show, they were contacted with the news that the thief had been arrested, and that the guitar had been returned to Kris. :)
- The two next-to-last segments in the final hour were spliced together, as though there was always one three-song segment (not true; originally Van Halen were all by themselves before the final two).
- #1 on the Country chart: "Ain't Misbehavin' " by Hank Williams, Jr.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "On My Own"
- #1 on the Album chart: Whitney Houston

Both of these will be extra-less editions; the former I heard on WCRZ last night (and didn't have time to hear it again today), the latter is because the station chose not to play them. :( May 24, 1980 LW #3: Air Supply "Lost in Love" LW #2: Christopher Cross "Ride Like the Wind" LW #1: Blondie "Call Me"40 -- The J. Geils Band - Love Stinks (38) 39 -- The Isley Brothers - Don't Say Goodnight (39)38 -- Billy Joel - It's Still Rock & Roll to Me (1) 37 40 Pat Benatar - We Live For Love (27) 36 39 Barry Manilow - I Don't Want to Walk Without You (36) 35 35 Firefall - Headed For a Fall (35)34 -- The Whispers - Lady (28) 33 -- The Pure Prairie League - Let Me Love You Tonight (10) AT40 Archives: From June 1979 - Anita Ward "Ring My Bell", the 241st #1 of the 70s32 34 Bernadette Peters - Gee Whiz (31) 31 31 Smokey Robinson - Let Me Be the Clock (31)30 33 Neil & Dara Sedaka - Should've Never Let You Go (19) 29 -- The Spinners - Cupid/I've Loved You For a Long Time (4) LDD: Simon & Garfunkel "Bridge Over Troubled Water" from Kathy in Stone Mountain, GA to Marty, her ex-fiance who once dedicated the song to her while they were together, and she thinks of him anytime she's heard the song ever since - now, she dedicates the song to him in hopes that she'll stop thinking about him28 30 The James Last Band - The Seduction (28)27 32 Bruce Cockburn - Wondering Where the Lions Are (21) 26 05 Billy Preston & Syreeta - With You I'm Born Again (4) 25 29 Jermaine Jackson - Let's Get Serious (9) 24 14 Charlie Dore - Pilot of the Airwaves (13) 23 25 The Clash - Train in Vain (23)AT40 Archives: From July 1979 - Donna Summer "Bad Girls", the 242nd #1 of the 70s22 07 Billy Joel - You May Be Right (7) 21 22 Dan Fogelberg - Heart Hotels (21)20 27 Elton John - Little Jeannie (3) 19 26 Michael Jackson - She's Out of My Life (10) 18 21 Robbie Dupree - Steal Away (6) 17 09 Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 (1) 16 17 The Pretenders - Brass in Pocket (I'm Special) (14) 15 15 Boz Scaggs - Breakdown Dead Ahead (15)14 19 Paul McCartney - Coming Up (1) 13 20 Bette Midler - The Rose (3) 12 13 Andy Gibb & Olivia Newton-John - I Can't Help It (12)AT40 Archives: From August 1979 - Chic "Good Times", the 243rd #1 of the 70s11 18 Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Against the Wind (5) 10 12 Gary Numan - Cars (9) 09 02 Christopher Cross - Ride Like the Wind (2) LDD: The Doobie Brothers "Depending on You" from Pam in Portland, OR to Lisa in Taiget, OR in appreciation of her friendship, which she is going to miss as she moves to California to begin her teaching career08 11 Linda Ronstadt - Hurt So Bad (8) 07 16 The Brothers Johnson - Stomp (7)06 10 Ambrosia - Biggest Part of Me (3) 05 06 Dr. Hook - Sexy Eyes (5) 04 08 Kenny Rogers & Kim Carnes - Don't Fall in Love With a Dreamer (4) 03 03 Air Supply - Lost in Love (3)02 04 Lipps, Inc. - Funkytown (1) 01 01 Blondie - Call Me (1)NOTES: - Another one from the "The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same" files: A number of the groups debuting in the 40 all at once. Why yes, this exact same thing would happen on this exact same date, six years later! That week, however, had them mostly next to each other - here, they're just all debuting at once. Also, the '86 week had a few more of the bands who weren't debuts lumped in with the consecutive string.
- Well...two more, since we also did just hear "Bridge Over Troubled Water" as a LDD in the '88 show a few weeks ago.
- The studio version of "Coming Up" was played this week.
- I kind of have to chuckle at there being a four-way tie among songs all leaping 7 notches this week, but the one that beats them with a 9-notch jump leaps right to its peak position.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Let's Get Serious"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Starting Over Again" by Dolly Parton
- And the most popular Album in America for the fourth week in a row is Against the Wind by Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band.
THE AMERICAN TOP 40 TRIATHLON OF ROCK AND ROLL(Original airdate: July 2, 1988) 40 Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin, "Whole Lotta Love") 39 Cliff Richard ("Dreaming") 38 Crosby, Stills, & Nash ("Southern Cross") 37 Marty Balin ("Hearts") 36 Robert Plant (The Honeydrippers, "Sea of Love") 35 The Moody Blues ("Your Wildest Dreams") 34 Patti LaBelle ("New Attitude") 33 Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills, & Nash, "Wasted on the Way") 32 The Kinks ("Come Dancing") 31 Billy Preston ("With You I'm Born Again") 30 Bill Medley ("(I've Had) The Time of My Life", with Jennifer Warnes) 29 Jermaine Jackson ("Dynamite") 28 Herb Alpert ("Diamonds") 27 Tina Turner ("Better Be Good to Me") 26 Eric Clapton ("I Can't Stand It") 25 Linda Ronstadt ("Somewhere Out There", with James Ingram) 24 The Spinners ("Cupid/I've Loved You For a Long Time") 23 Bob Seger ("Shakedown") 22 Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship (Medley: Somebody to Love/White Rabbit/Miracles/With Your Love/Count on Me/Runaway/Jane/We Built This City/Sara/Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now/It's Not Over ('Til It's Over)) 21 John Fogerty ("The Old Man Down the Road") 20 James Brown (Medley: I Got You (I Feel Good)/Papa's Got a Brand New Bag/It's a Man's Man's Man's World/Cold Sweat/I Got the Feelin'/Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud/Give it Up or Turnit a Loose/Mother Popcorn/Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine/Super Bad/Hot Pants/Get on the Good Foot/Living in America) 19 Gladys Knight ("Love Overboard") 18 Smokey Robinson ("Just to See Her") 17 Dionne Warwick ("Heartbreaker") 16 Barbra Streisand ("Woman in Love") 15 Cher ("I Found Someone") 14 Paul Simon ("You Can Call Me Al") 13 Kenny Rogers ("Islands in the Stream", with Dolly Parton) 12 Neil Diamond ("America") 11 George Harrison ("Got My Mind Set on You") 10 Aretha Franklin ("Freeway of Love") 09 Marvin Gaye ("Sexual Healing") 08 Barry Gibb (Medley: To Love Somebody/Words/I've Gotta Get a Message to You/How Can You Mend a Broken Heart/Run to Me/Jive Talkin'/Nights on Broadway/Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)/You Should Be Dancing/Love So Right/How Deep is Your Love/Stayin' Alive/Night Fever/Too Much Heaven/Tragedy/Love You Inside Out/Guilty/What Kind of Fool/Shine Shine) 07 The Rolling Stones ("Under Cover of the Night") 06 Mick Jagger ("Dancing in the Street", with David Bowie) 05 Stevie Wonder ("Part-Time Lover") 04 Michael Jackson ("Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' ") 03 Diana Ross ("Why Do Fools Fall in Love") 02 John Lennon ("Nobody Told Me") 01 Paul McCartney (Medley: Yesterday/Another Day/Uncle Albert-Admiral Halsey/Hi Hi Hi/My Love/Live and Let Die/Helen Wheels/Jet/Band on the Run/Junior's Farm/Listen to What the Man Said/Silly Love Songs/Let 'Em In/Maybe I'm Amazed/With a Little Luck/Goodnight Tonight/Coming Up/Ebony and Ivory/Take it Away/The Girl is Mine/No More Lonely Nights/Spies Like Us/Say Say Say)NOTES: - This countdown is presented by WTRY - unfortunately, they didn't play the extras.
- This show is a countdown of the 40 biggest "endurance champions" of the 60s and 70s, and up to this point in the 80s (specifically, reaching the Top 10 in the 80s). There's no basis to list peak positions, thus why you won't find any here - instead, what is listed is what was played for each artist.
- This show also has a very similar feel to the Top 40 Newcomers of the 80s, with interview clips directly from the artists themselves, sounds not heard in regular weekly countdowns, and Casey often speaking over something playing in the background.
- This is also probably the last show in the original run before the "Casey's Coast to Coast" bumpers were removed, though I suspect that this show was recorded well in advance (possibly in mid-June).
- The show also kicked off with a completely different #40 jingle.
- A few odd song choices here - never mind that most of them are 80s hits (this actually doesn't surprise me)...for CSN, they played their non-Top 10 80s hit instead of their Top 10 80s hit, saving that for Graham Nash solo. (I wondered how Nash would be ranked separately from CSN, but hadn't realized he had hit success elsewhere.) Jermaine Jackson also sees one of his non-Top 10 hits played. There's also a lack of consistency among playing non-duet hits versus duet hits (Patti LaBelle and Linda Ronstadt come to mind)...
- For the Barry Gibb medley, everything before "Guilty" is obviously Bee Gees hits.
- The only available source for this says that apparently the full "Say Say Say" was played, so I wonder if Premiere cut that down. With no way to prove it either way, I simply listed it at the end of the medley.

- Get a load of those top three big debuts all going...not much higher! Of all the "7 debut" weeks in the 80s, this probably qualifies as one of the strangest if for no other reason than that.
- Larry Morgan noted for "Every Breath You Take" that that song debuted on the Hot 100 the following week at #36. As for the rationale behind picking "Burning Up"? Your guess is as good as mine!
- Story behind "You're the One That I Want" as an Extra: Travolta was originally rejected from starring in the Broadway version of Grease because his voice was judged as being too weak. He'd return a year later to audition for a supporting role, but would ultimately have the last laugh given his starring in the movie version. ;)
- No spoiler for the new #1 song this week; in fact it sounded like Bowie could have held at #1 with Casey saying, "coming up, the two biggies - both about dancing!"
- #1 on the Album chart: Thriller by Michael Jackson
- #1 on the Country chart: "You Take Me For Granted" by Merle Haggard
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Save the Overtime (For Me)" by Gladys Knight & The Pips

(LW: 35), "Angel" by Aerosmith (LW: 34), "My Girl" by Suave (LW: 32), and "Wishing Well" by Terence Trent D'Arby (LW: 31). NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WGHN, with a noticeably heavy "bass" layer on their audio stream.
- We've seen back-to-back instances of "Always on My Mind" twice now - this week, with 6-5-82 as the "B" show, we get the choice between the two of them!
- "Mercedes Boy" received the softer jingle.
- I think this is only the second time, ever, where I've heard "The Valley Road" in a show and it wasn't shortened; the other is the one from two weeks later.
- There's a certain song among Billboard's other #1s this week, that would've been an ideal extra pick for that very reason...I wonder if the only reason they didn't pick it was because they did use it for another 1988 week previously?
- #1 on the Country chart: "I Told You So" by Randy Travis
- #1 on the Dance chart: "The Promise" by When in Rome
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "Little Walter" by Tony! Toni! Tone!
- #1 on the Album chart: Faith by George Michael
