Elton John retorts with the very next song: "Nobody Wins"!
- A double dose of extras not yet on the Hot 100 - Foreigner debuted the very next week, then the week after sprinted right into The 40. That same week, "Endless Love" debuted, and the following week it too was in the countdown. Of course, neither the 7/4 nor 7/11 charts will be heard here, for different reasons. This same fact is what prompts the underline for Jim Photoglo - he spent those two weeks at his peak of #25, only to then leave The 40 entirely on 7/18.
- Story behind "Lonely Boy" as an Extra: Casey told the story of how despite all of Paul's chart successes as a singer and/or as a songwriter, perhaps his most recognizable song was one heard every night by millions but having never made the chart! It was the (then-current) theme from The Tonight Show. "Lonely Boy" was played as the biggest chart hit of Paul's career.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Blessed Are the Believers" by Anne Murray
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Give it to Me Baby" by Rick James
- #1 on the Album chart: Kim Carnes' Mistaken Identity

Biggest Mover (tie): "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" - U2 (#24 to #17) "I Want Your Sex" - George Michael (#28 to #21) Long Distance Dedications: "Heartlight" - Neil Diamond Neither of these are fully accurate, actually - U2 were #25 the week before, so (for the second week in a row, as it turns out) they have Biggest Mover honors all to themselves. As to the LDDs..."Heartlight" was actually the second. #30 "You Keep Me Hangin' On" was the first, though missing it is understandable - the cue sheet doesn't mention that it is one. - That first segment employed a not-often used technique - Casey teased a chart fact in the show opening among the week's six debuts, and the matching song was played in the first segment with its full story. Possibly making this even more unusual is the fact that that first segment was the first three songs; the story was told at #38.
- Incidentally, since the next two weeks were hosted by Charlie Van Dyke, this is the only week we'll hear that #38 song.
- Also on that note...get a load of the four underlines in the Top 10. Yup, this is the highest we'll hear those songs. Yet despite all the underlines, this week manages to tie the existing record low for number of songs actually peaking. :o
- First LDD "You Keep Me Hangin' On" isn't indicated as such on the cue sheet.
- As with the week before, "Kiss Him Goodbye" received the softer jingle. So too did "Heart and Soul", for that matter.
- Wasn't expecting this surprise...the more widely-heard version of "Here I Go Again" played as the extra, rather than the version normally played on AT40 (and also featured three weeks later).
- "Who's That Girl" debuted on next week's Hot 100 at #43 - if you recall last year's 7-25 show, it was already in The 40 by the time Casey returned from his weeks away.
- #1 on the Album chart: Whitney by Whitney Houston
- #1 on the Country chart: "That Was a Close One" by Earl Thomas Conley
- #1 on the Soul chart: "I Feel Good All Over" by Stephanie Mills
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Respectable" by Mel & Kim

What I found unusual about this show is when the George Michael song was introduced and again when it ended, Casey said the song title "I Want Your Sex"

AMERICAN TOP 40's GIANTS OF ROCK AND ROLL(Originally broadcast: July 5, 1986) 40 Pink Floyd (Another Brick in the Wall [Part II]) 39 Brian Holland-Lamont Dozier-Eddie Holland (The Four Tops "I Can't Help Myself") 38 Jerry Lee Lewis (Great Balls of Fire) 37 David Bowie (Let's Dance) 36 Mick Jagger (Harlem Shuffle) 35 Prince (When Doves Cry) 34 Ray Charles (What'd I Say) 33 Marvin Gaye (I Heard it Through the Grapevine) 32 Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship (We Built This City) 31 Fleetwood Mac (Dreams) 30 Hall & Oates (Out of Touch) 29 Quincy Jones (USA For Africa "We Are the World") Flashback Extra: Tom Petty "Runnin' Down a Dream", the solo man with the most hits on Billboard's Rock chart, with 49 hits to date28 Little Richard (Good Golly Miss Molly) 27 Bill Haley and His Comets (Rock Around the Clock) 26 Michael Jackson (Beat It) 25 Simon & Garfunkel (The Sounds of Silence) 24 Billy Joel (My Life) 23 Jimi Hendrix (Purple Haze) 22 Eric Clapton (Derek and the Dominoes "Layla", his own "I Shot the Sheriff") 21 The Supremes (Someday We'll Be Together) 20 James Brown (Living in America) 19 Led Zeppelin (Stairway to Heaven) Flashback Extra: Aerosmith "Love in an Elevator"18 Lionel Richie (All Night Long [All Night]) 17 The Doors (Light My Fire) 16 The Who (Won't Get Fooled Again) 15 Bob Dylan (Like a Rolling Stone) 14 The Eagles (Hotel California) 13 Creedence Clearwater Revival (Bad Moon Rising) 12 Chicago (You're the Inspiration) 11 John Lennon (Imagine) 10 Buddy Holly (That'll Be the Day) 09 The Beach Boys (Good Vibrations) 08 Paul McCartney (Coming Up, The Beatles "Yesterday) Flashback Extra: Heart "Never"07 Elton John (Sad Songs [Say So Much]) 06 Bruce Springsteen (Born to Run, Born in the USA) 05 Chuck Berry (Maybelline) 04 Stevie Wonder (Part-Time Lover) 03 The Rolling Stones (Jumpin' Jack Flash, Miss You) 02 Elvis Presley (Hound Dog, Suspicious Minds) Flashback Extra: Pat Benatar "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"01 The Beatles (I Want to Hold Your Hand, A Day in the Life, The End)NOTES: - This countdown brought to us by: WODC. Remember back on 12-26-87 when you heard about that station in Chilicothe, OH that John Cougar Mellencamp played a free concert at? Well, this is the station that they exist as today.
- To compile this countdown, AT40 conducted a poll among thousands of DJs worldwide as to which acts have had the greatest influence on rock and roll today.
- Since several acts had droppieces played, and there were no medleys in this show, I've only listed full songs played above.
- "Let's Dance" was shortened, and with the cue sheet giving a running time of 5:46 for its segment (38 + 37), I'm guessing that was original. Not sure about with "Out of Touch", though (running time: 9:40, but paired with the 5-minute "We Are the World").
- The "AT40 Archives" jingle gets dusted off for frequent use in this show.
- Really was not prepared for the production structure that we got here! Hour 2 began with #28 (has happened twice before, one just a few months ago), Hour 3 began with #18 (I know of only one other show that does this - 3-14-92), and the final Hour began with #7! :o
- No drumroll for #1, possibly because it wouldn't quite have fit with Casey's narrative delivery here - which incidentally, didn't suffer without it.
- The closing theme actually played out in full, which the '87 show also nearly accomplished.

OK, there are two '80s shows and THREE '70s shows slated for this weekend (well, officially two '70s shows and one show premiering exclusively on one station) so once again my weekend preview will be a two-parter. Starting with the '70s first. The "A" show for the '70s is from 7/10/1971. Five songs debuted this week: "Signs" - Five Man Electrical Band (#33) "Beginnings" - Chicago (#37) "Summer Sand" - Dawn (#38) "Chicago" - Graham Nash (#39) "Moon Shadow" - Cat Stevens (#40) Five songs fell off this week: "I'll Meet You Halfway" - The Partridge Family (#21) "Albert Flasher" - The Guess Who (#29) "Joy To The World" - Three Dog Night (#31) "I Don't Know How To Love Him" - Helen Reddy (#32) "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - Aretha Franklin (#33) Biggest Mover: "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" - The Bee Gees (#39 to #16) Biggest Dropper (tie): "Sweet And Innocent" - Donny Osmond (#13 to #24) "Don't Knock My Love Pt. 1" - Wilson Pickett (#15 to #26) Original extras: "The Gypsy" - The Ink Spots "I Feel The Earth Move" - Carole King "Don't Worry" - Marty Robbins Carole King's extra stays in the show. The other two are optional extras. Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "The Gypsy" - The Ink Spots (original AT40 extra) Hour #2: "Rings" - Cymarron (#45) Hour #3: "Don't Worry" - Marty Robbins (original AT40 extra) The "B" show this week features 1979 but it's the Disco Special that originally aired 7/7/1979. Here's my brief preview from 2012. Dropped from the lineup completely is the Commodores' "Three Times A Lady" which was part of a survey among the top slow dance songs (The Commodores were #2 between "How Deep Is Your Love" which was in Hour #1 and "Reunited"). All original extras (including the Hour #1 extras) remain intact. Optional extras for this show are: "Never Can Say Goodbye" - Gloria Gaynor "Copacabana (At The Copa)" - Barry Manilow "Heart Of Glass" - Blondie "Love Hangover" - Diana Ross And as for that one other countdown show, WTOJ has a special treat this Sunday at 3PM Eastern time - the first-ever airing of the second ever episode of AT40 with the Billboard chart from 7/18/1970. I don't have a cue sheet in advance right now (I imagine Premiere will make this countdown available as an "A" show option next year) so I'll just give out the chart facts for now. Two songs debuted this week: "Lay A Little Lovin' On Me" - Robin McNamara (#37) "Steal Away" - Johnnie Taylor (#38) Two songs fell off this week: "Everything Is Beautiful" - Ray Stevens (#29) "Spirit In The Dark" - Aretha Franklin (#38) Biggest Mover: "Spill The Wine" - Eric Burdon & War (#38 to #24) Biggest Dropper: "Sugar, Sugar" - Wilson Pickett (#25 to #39) I'll have the '80s preview coming up soon.

And as for that one other countdown show, WTOJ has a special treat this Sunday at 3PM Eastern time - the first-ever airing of the second ever episode of AT40 with the Billboard chart from 7/18/1970. I, on the other hand, do. :) Original Extras: "It's Not Unusual" - Tom Jones "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" - Herman's Hermits "I'm Sorry" - Brenda Lee "For You Blue" - The Beatles* "In the Year 2525" - Zager & Evans *"For You Blue" was the B-Side to "The Long and Winding Road"; if I'm understanding the cue sheet correctly, apparently both sides see play at #20. As to the others - the first three are the three designated Optional Extras for this, in that order. "In the Year 2525" will remain where it apparently was originally, which is after #10. Now, let's flip to the direct opposite end of the AT40 classic run spectrum. :) July 9, 1988 40 -- Whitney Houston - Love Will Save the Day (9) 39 -- Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers - Tomorrow People (39)38 -- Aerosmith - Rag Doll (17) 37 23 Belinda Carlisle - Circle in the Sand (7) 36 -- The Fat Boys & Chubby Checker - The Twist (16) 35 39 Nia Peeples - Trouble (35)34 38 Climie Fisher - Love Changes Everything (23) 33 35 Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky (28) 32 16 George Michael - One More Try (1) 31 34 Chicago - I Don't Want to Live Without Your Love (3) AT40 Extra: John Parr "St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)" Flashback Extra: Tracy Chapman "Fast Car"30 12 Prince - Alphabet St. (8) 29 30 Billy Ocean - The Colour of Love (17) 28 33 The Contours - Do You Love Me (11)* 27 36 Elton John - I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That (2) 26 25 Robert Plant - Tall Cool One (25)25 31 Johnny Kemp - Just Got Paid (10) 24 28 Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - 1-2-3 (3) 23 17 Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning (17) 22 24 Sade - Paradise (16) 21 26 DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Parents Just Don't Understand (12) 20 14 Lita Ford - Kiss Me Deadly (12) Flashback Extra: Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine", which was "slowly moving up the Hot 100"19 10 Rick Astley - Together Forever (1) 18 13 Brenda K. Starr - I Still Believe (13) 17 27 Terence Trent D'Arby - Sign Your Name (4)16 22 Eric Carmen - Make Me Lose Control (3) 15 19 Jane Wiedlin - Rush Hour (9) 14 20 Breathe - Hands to Heaven (2) 13 18 Rod Stewart - Lost in You (12) LDD: Journey "Open Arms" from Nancy at Duke University to Rick at Cornell University, who she had a stormy long-distance romance with while they both attended (undergraduate) school in different places - for graduate school, he asked her to come with him, but she couldn't bring herself to do it; in the months since, they've re-kindled the friendship that their relationship was originally based on12 21 Steve Winwood - Roll With It (1) 11 04 The Jets - Make it Real (4) Flashback Extra: Robert Palmer "Simply Irresistible", which was "a week away from breaking into the Top 40"10 11 Al B. Sure! - Nite and Day (7) 09 05 Bruce Hornsby & The Range - The Valley Road (5) 08 15 Richard Marx - Hold On to the Nights (1) 07 02 Debbie Gibson - Foolish Beat (1) 06 08 Poison - Nothin' But a Good Time (6)05 01 Michael Jackson - Dirty Diana (1) 04 09 INXS - New Sensation (3) 03 07 Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me (2) Flashback Extra: George Michael "Monkey", which made the Hot Shot Debut that week at #4202 06 Pebbles - Mercedes Boy (2) 01 03 Cheap Trick - The Flame (1)*1988 peak; hit #3 in 1962. Four songs debut in this week's countdown. The four hits that fall out are: "Heart of Mine" by Boz Scaggs (LW: 40), "Naughty Girls" by Samantha Fox (LW: 37), "Supersonic" by J.J. Fad (LW: 32), and "Everything Your Heart Desires" by Hall & Oates (LW: 29). NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WWIS. When this show first aired in 2009, I was up north for a college group retreat, and wasn't yet hearing these shows by streaming. This time, I'm listening early due to a family function tomorrow (and I'm not sure yet what Sunday will be like).
- Casey ran so long in the opening, that the opening theme actually ended before he was done!
- As he did last week, Casey has another opening-teased story right in the first segment, this time for Bob Marley and reggae music at #39.
- The first three segments - 40/39, 38, 37/36 - were all bumpered together.
- Story behind "St. Elmo's Fire" as an Extra: One last, final update on the Man in Motion, who completed his journey the previous year.
- From the "Don't Quit Your Day Job" files: Casey speculated about the prospects of INXS, Def Leppard, and Pebbles hitting #1, given their respective big moves within the Top 10. As you can see above, exactly zero of them managed to get there. ;)
- Another week where Casey counts down the Top 5 albums of the week: #5 - Scenes From the Southside by Bruce Hornsby & The Range, #4 - The Dirty Dancing soundtrack, #3 - Faith by George Michael, #2 - Hysteria by Def Leppard, and #1 - OU812 by Van Halen.
- Now why did I just list the #1 album amongst the others, which I don't usually do? Well...it turns out that, as with 6-27-87, Casey didn't read the #1s on Billboard's other charts this week! :o So what were the others...?
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "Paradise" (he did mention this one, at #22)
- #1 on the Country chart: "Fallin' Again" by Alabama
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Theme From S'Express" by S'Express

NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WGRQ. Yes, it's been a busy weekend this weekend, and next weekend isn't looking much better.
- "Forever" received the standard jingle despite being an epic ballad. Actually, nobody received the softer jingle this week.
- The "Rock Mix" of "Freeway of Love" was played this week; upon checking it out it appears this was on the song's 12" single. Casey also played the live version of "Heaven", which was the B-side (and which, it appears, Premiere shortened. Nice going, Premiere... ).
- Story behind "I Love Rock & Roll" as an Extra: One day the month before, Joan was visiting her manager's home and was out on the beach when she answered a cry for help, saving the life of a 3-year-old boy who'd wandered too far out into the water.
- To clarify, if the second LDD was in any way unclear, yes Johnnie is female.
- #1 on the Album chart: Songs From the Big Chair by Tears For Fears
- #1 on the Country chart: "Dixie Road" by Lee Greenwood
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Save Your Love" by Rene & Angela
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "Glow" by Rick James

The "Rock Mix" of "Freeway of Love" was played this week; upon checking it out it appears this was on the song's 12" single. I listened to most of American Top 40: The '80s yesterday. I heard the Rock Mix of Freeway of Love. It was great! But I couldn't find it on YouTube. However, I did record the song. :)
