NOTES: - Notably, except for "Tears", all of this week's droppers took pretty big falls out of The 40 - 20 notches or more.
- This week's "Deja Vu": Casey stating the songs that hit #1 as live recordings. Why yes, we did just hear that stat two weeks ago! Or did we? Discounting the two live #1s that come after THIS week's show, "Peppermint Twist" was also given in the '87 show and not here.
- Gee, with just a slight shuffle-around in the final hour, they could have put the second LDD right after Paul's own solo song.
- Another week where Casey counts down the Top 5 albums of the week: #5 - Big Bam Boom by Hall & Oates, #4 - Volume 1: The Mini-Album by The Honeydrippers, #3 - Private Dancer by Tina Turner, #2 - Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen, and the #1 LP...
- #1 on the LP chart: Purple Rain by Prince & The Revolution
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Solid" by Ashford & Simpson
- #1 on the Country chart: "Chance of Loving You" by Earl Thomas Conley

NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: KCPI.
- As you might guess from above, this was the first week where Casey started reading the droppers once again in the 80s after years of not doing so. Speaking of which - that's a lot of "T" droppers this week!
- It's also a week of very diminishing returns - three Top 10s and a long-running Top 20 all drop out this week, and only one of the debuts even reaches the Top 20, let alone Top 10.
- Story behind "Merry Christmas Darling" as an Extra: It's the only song considered to be a "classic" Christmas song to be written after 1960. (Maybe it's just me though, but that distinction doesn't seem to be holding up these days...)
- "99 Luftballons" was played in a German-English medley put together by original AT40 staffer Ron Shapiro.
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Talking in Your Sleep"
- #1 on the Country chart: "Black Sheep" by John Anderson
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Time Will Reveal"
- #1 on the Album chart: Can't Slow Down by Lionel Richie

- Story behind "Step Into Christmas" as an Extra: It's the only Elton song to sell a million copies, yet never make the Hot 100. It accumulated that million over the years since its release in 1973, not all at once.
- Story behind "The Christmas Song" as an Extra: Mel Torme got his inspiration for the song...laying poolside in Palm Springs, California!
- Story behind "White Christmas" as an Extra: Originally recorded in 1942, it grew to become the biggest-selling single of all time (at least as of this show) by coming back to hit again and again throughout the years, through at least 1962.
- Casey stated that "Starting Over" would probably be higher except for the fact that the data for this week's chart was collected prior to John Lennon's death, which actually isn't too much farther removed from how the chart still operates today. (Though, the timetable is arguably shorter now than it was then.)
- #1 on the Country chart: "That's All That Matters to Me" by Mickey Gilley
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Celebration"
- #1 on the Album chart: Greatest Hits by Kenny Rogers

The last four of those would be placed in 1985, while "Blue Jean" and "Desert Moon" were most likely victims of peaking right at the end of Billboard's survey period (11/10) that year (especially given some of the other songs that did make it). Also given that "Heart and Soul" peaked after the end of Billboard's survey period in 1983 (around 10/29, I believe), I wonder if its 1984 omission was in error. It's also worth noting that Billboard's chart had to accomodate "Cum On Feel the Noize", "Islands in the Stream", "Uptown Girl", and "All Night Long (All Night)", all of which AT40 had ranked the previous year.
- Speaking of disparity, though, how about Premiere's choices of extras? There were a number of others that ranked on Billboard's survey but not AT40's - "Yah Mo B There", "Rock Me Tonite", "When You Close Your Eyes", "Dancing in the Sheets", "Tonight", "The Longest Time", "Time Will Reveal", "Give it Up", "Dance Hall Days" - but as you can see above, Premiere reached even further down, picking none of them!
- It's also worth noting that both "Borderline" and "If Ever You're in My Arms Again" each ranked 20+ notches lower here than they did on Billboard's survey (26 lower for Madonna, 22 lower for Peabo).
- Casey pointed out that "You Might Think" won the award for Best Video of the year from MTV.
- Not mentioned by Casey, however, is that "To All the Girls I've Loved Before" was the #1 Country song of the year (per Billboard).
- Two back-to-backs in this half of the Top 100 - one pair didn't have their own segment (Madonna), while the other did (Huey Lewis)!
- Top Album Group of the Year: Duran Duran
- Top Album Act of the Year: Lionel Richie
- Top Singles Group of the Year: Culture Club
- #1 Album of the Year: Thriller
- Top Female Soul Artist of the Year: Tina Turner
- Top Disco Artist of the Year: Shannon
- Top Female Album Artist of the Year: Cyndi Lauper

That fact alone explains the six songs that appear on both this survey and next year's. This would also be one of only three times in the Hot 100 era where the #1 song of the year didn't match Billboard's (1977 and 1990 are the other two).
- Casey did state at the end that their survey period covered 12 months, ending the second week of December.
- "Purple Rain" didn't rank in Billboard's Top 100 of the year, though that's hardly surprising given that it had been charting for a grand total of six weeks when their survey period ended (remember, it debuted on the entire Hot 100 at #28 on 10/6). Given its rather quick chart run, it's equally unsurprising that it didn't turn up in the 1985 survey, either.
- Also missing were "I Feel For You", "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", and "Out of Touch"; these three appeared in 1985 (and in the Top 10, no less!).
- "The Glamorous Life", incidentally, ranked 2nd for the year on the Dance & Disco chart. Who's #1? See below...
- Oddly, "Oh, Sherrie" received the softer jingle.
- TRIPLE WHAMMY: I count three mistakes from Casey on this one - he claimed that "Drive" was the only one of The Cars' nine Top 40 hits that Benjamin Orr sang lead on (he also sang "Just What I Needed" and "Let's Go"), that "Break My Stride" was the song that spent the most weeks on the Hot 100 (29; "Borderline" spent one more), and that this year tied 1977's record of the most movie songs hitting #1 (6; actually this year broke it, with 7). Seeing as this is also the year where that game show hit infamy...one more Whammy, Casey, and... ;)
- A German-English mix of "99 Luftballoons" was played, with Casey introing it with both pronunciations as well.
- "Love is a Battlefield" and "Hard Habit to Break" ranked 24 and 22 notches lower, respectively, on Billboard's survey. The biggest disparity in the entire Top 100, however, goes to "Caribbean Queen" - 31 notches lower.
- The middle two segments in the second hour were joined together.
- Shockingly, 1984's lowest-ranked #1 song finished higher on its survey than the other such songs did for 1980-1983. The closest was 1982, whose lowest-ranked #1 finished #23 for the year (the other three all finished in the 30s their respective years).
- I did have to double take, though, when Casey stated after "Dancing in the Dark" that only #1 songs remained. Pretty sure that is a record among all years, with the Top 16 of the year all being #1s. Then again, I suppose it helps that just one song, "Missing You", spent only one week at the top, and that it also had a lengthy run to get there.
- Top Male Artist (Singles + Albums combined) and Soul Singles Artist: Lionel Richie
- #1 for the year on the Dance & Disco chart: A triple-cut entry - "Automatic/I Need You/Jump (For My Love)", by The Pointer Sisters. Nevermind that #1 for the year is a three-track entry - said trio never even hit #1 weekly! They spent 4 weeks at #2 in January and February.
- Top Soul Singles Group: The Pointer Sisters
- Producer of the Year: Richard Perry
- Top Male Newcomer of the Year: Rockwell
- Top Female Artist of the Year: Cyndi Lauper
- #1 Soundtrack Album of the Year: Footloose
- #1 Soul Song of the Year: "When Doves Cry"
