areyoureadytojump you seem to be a week behind there. ;) So too was WCRZ tonight, for a bit. March 6, 1982 LW #2: Journey "Open Arms" LW #1: The J. Geils Band "Centerfold"40 -- Neil Diamond - On the Way to the Sky (27) 39 -- Foreigner - Juke Box Hero (26) 38 -- Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen (11) 37 40 Smokey Robinson - Tell Me Tomorrow (33) 36 -- Sister Sledge - My Guy (23) 35 21 Barry Manilow - Somewhere Down the Road (21) 34 -- The J. Geils Band - Freeze Frame (4) 33 37 Chilliwack - I Believe (33)32 23 George Benson - Turn Your Love Around (5) Flashback Extra: Willie Nelson "Always on My Mind"31 17 Olivia Newton-John - Physical (1) 30 15 Sheena Easton - You Could Have Been With Me (15) 29 32 Quincy Jones featuring James Ingram - One Hundred Ways (14) 28 31 ABBA - When All is Said and Done (27) 27 33 Huey Lewis & The News - Do You Believe in Love (7) 26 29 Skyy - Call Me (26)25 27 Cliff Richard - Daddy's Home (23) 24 34 Bob & Doug McKenzie - Take Off (16) 23 08 Juice Newton - The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known) (7) 22 24 Rod Stewart - Tonight I'm Yours (Don't Hurt Me) (20) LDD: Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band "Against the Wind" from Judy Hiller in Springdale, AR to Bob Seger, whose music helped her and her late husband Courtney through Courtney's 5-year battle with cancer; they wrote Bob a letter thanking him for the music he's made, and received a response back along with his latest album Flashback Extra: Rick Springfield "Don't Talk to Strangers", which made the highest debut that week at #5721 25 The Pointer Sisters - Should I Do It (13) 20 30 Vangelis - Chariots of Fire (1) 19 39 Olivia Newton-John - Make a Move on Me (5)18 07 Quarterflash - Harden My Heart (3) 17 20 Bertie Higgins - Key Largo (8) 16 22 The Oak Ridge Boys - Bobbie Sue (12) 15 16 Alabama - Love in the First Degree (15)AT40 Extra: Wings "Band on the Run"14 18 Buckner & Garcia - Pac-Man Fever (9) 13 14 Kenny Rogers - Through the Years (13)12 13 The Police - Spirits in the Material World (11) 11 19 The Go-Gos - We Got the Beat (2) Flashback Extra: Kool & The Gang "Get Down on It", which was "four weeks away from hitting the countdown"10 11 The Little River Band - Take it Easy on Me (10) 09 10 Dan Fogelberg - Leader of the Band (9) 08 12 Diana Ross - Mirror, Mirror (8)07 03 Hall & Oates - I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) (1) 06 06 Air Supply - Sweet Dreams (5) LDD: Three Dog Night "Joy to the World" from four girls in Fort Campbell, KY to their biology teacher for how fun he can be, even when they have to do things like dissecting a frog05 05 Stevie Wonder - That Girl (4) 04 04 The Cars - Shake it Up (4)Flashback Extra: Paul Davis " '65 Love Affair"03 09 Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I Love Rock & Roll (1) 02 02 Journey - Open Arms (2) 01 01 The J. Geils Band - Centerfold (1)NOTES: - Note how "Take Off" flies past five other singles in the 20s, yet ultimately goes on to peak lower than two of them.
- Actually come to think of it, this week's chart is pretty cutthroat - LOTS of songs jumping over other rising songs.
- Story behind "Band on the Run" as an Extra: Paul McCartney originally grew up playing the trumpet, but soon realized that he couldn't do both that and be a singer, which he really wanted more, so he switched to the bass guitar, later having to adjust to be able to play it left-handed. The same song is an Extra on 4-18-87, but that week focuses entirely on the guitar-playing.
- WCRZ goofed and played last week's end of Hour 3 instead of this week's. Luckily I heard the correct segments elsewhere. They did play all four extras, though.
- Heh, the girls called the song "Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog" in the second LDD, and with a laugh, Casey said, "here's the song I think you're looking for."
- #1 on the Soul chart: "That Girl"
- #1 on the Country chart: "You're the Best Break This Old Heart Has Ever Had" by Ed Bruce
- #1 on the Album chart: Beauty and the Beat by The Go-Gos

- Station Of The Week: WTOJ - Note: Although AT40 had been a four-hour show for about five months, this was the very first show in which they opened by playing back the previous week's Top 3 songs in full. This would go on for nearly two years before the show began to cut back (and on the current AT40, it's been six months since the Top 3 recap - presumed extinct by now - was played) - Worth noting: In what may or may not be coincidental, the word "b----in'" was edited from Billy Joel's hit - Line of the show from Casey after the second LDD writer: "I just hope you're not spreading yourself too thin." - In a bit of a head-scratcher, albeit played as their biggest hit (and thus unteased by Casey prior), the Everly Brothers' "Bye, Bye Love" peaked at #2 despite having three songs hit #1 - in order of fewest weeks at the top - "Wake Up Little Susie" (two weeks at #1), "All I Have To Do Is Dream" (three weeks at #1) and "Cathy's Clown" (five weeks at #1). Why "Cathy's Clown" wasn't selected is beyond me. - #1 Soul: "Bustin' Loose" - Chuck Brown & The Soul-Searchers - #1 Country: "Golden Tears" - Dave & Sugar - #1 Disco: Do Ya Think I'm Sexy - #1 Album: Spirits Having Flown - The Bee Gees

This would be its last week in the Top 40, having not spent a single week at any other position. If you find that odd, what do you think of the eventual chart run for "Change of Heart": 38-28-28-21-21-21-22-out.
A handful of songs jumped 7 notches this week, but Pat Benatar beat 'em all with her 8-notch jump. :) Funny how those songs would later outpeak hers.
- "Allentown" was Billy Joel's 17th Top 40 hit. Oddly fitting, isn't it?
Interestingly, the songs in their second week at their peak would not be done spending time at their peaks, while all the songs which had spent more than 2 weeks were at their last weeks there, save for "Shame on the Moon". This of course means a hat trick of sorts for the Stray Cats, in spite of Casey's prediction of "Stray Cat Strut" possibly becoming the 13th song to hit #1 with an animal in the title. ;) (That honor would go to "Karma Chameleon".)
- This would be the second week at #1 for MJ on the Soul chart and the Album chart as well as here. #1 on the Country chart went to "The Rose" by Conway Twitty this week.

Well, we're back to having two '80s shows this coming week (with one '70s show) and I am back to my regular two-part weekend preview (a few days early to make up for being lax last week). Starting with the '70s first. "AT40: The '70s" is from 3/15/1975 which aired back in 2011. Here was my repost with some updating. Five songs debuted this week: "Philadelphia Freedom" - Elton John (#35) "Butter Boy" - Fanny (#36) "The South's Gonna Do It" - Charlie Daniels (#37) "Walking In Rhythm" - The Blackbyrds (#38) "Satin Soul" - Love Unlimited Orchestra (#40) Five songs fell out of the Top 40 this week: "Nightingale" - Carole King (#24) "You're No Good" - Linda Ronstadt (#26) "Some Kind Of Wonderful" - Grand Funk (#30) "I've Been This Way Before" - Neil Diamond (#34) "I Get Lifted" - George McCrae (#37) Biggest Mover: "No No Song/Snookeroo" - Ringo Starr (#25 to #14) Biggest Dropper: "I'm A Woman" - Maria Muldaur (#12 to #26) Original extras: None Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "How Long" - Ace (#77) Hour #2: "Amie" - Pure Prarie League (#76) Hour #3: "Shining Star" - Earth, Wind & Fire (#51) Of note, when this show last aired in 2011, the Hour #3 op extra was Ringo Starr's "No No Song" which was at #25 that week but Casey played the flip side "Snookeroo" instead. I guess the EWF extra was probably added in memory of the late Maurice White (R.I.P.). '80s preview is coming soon.

Welcome to the last Casey-hosted 1988 show aired by Premiere! That's right - all of the 1988 shows available have now been exhausted. (1983 will actually probably be next - only a single May show remains there...) This isn't to say that this is completely the end of the line for 1988, but unless things change, there are only repeat airings from here on out. April 2, 1988 40 -- Brenda Russell featuring Joe Esposito - Piano in the Dark (6) 39 -- Johnny Hates Jazz - Shattered Dreams (2) 38 -- The Deele - Two Occasions (10) 37 26 Cher - I Found Someone (10) 36 -- Samantha Fox - Naughty Girls (Need Love Too) (3) 35 -- Henry Lee Summer - I Wish I Had a Girl (20) 34 40 Toto - Pamela (22) 33 23 George Harrison - When We Was Fab (23) 32 33 Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World (32) 31 35 LL Cool J - Going Back to Cali (31)30 38 Morris Day - Fishnet (23) Flashback Extra: Bon Jovi "Born to Be My Baby"29 34 Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine - Anything For You (1) Obituary: Andy Gibb "Shadow Dancing"28 29 Alexander O'Neal featuring Cherrelle - Never Knew Love Like This (28)27 30 Scarlett & Black - You Don't Know (20) 26 31 Icehouse - Electric Blue (7) 25 28 Bruce Springsteen - One Step Up (13) 24 14 David Lee Roth - Just Like Paradise (6) 23 27 Natalie Cole - Pink Cadillac (5) 22 24 Rick Springfield - Rock of Life (22)21 15 Patrick Swayze featuring Wendy Fraser - She's Like the Wind (3) 20 25 Taylor Dayne - Prove Your Love (7) Flashback Extra: Annie Lennox & Al Green "Put a Little Love in Your Heart"19 08 George Michael - Father Figure (1) 18 19 John Cougar Mellencamp - Check it Out (14) 17 21 Tiffany - I Saw Him Standing There (7) 16 20 Aerosmith - Angel (3) 15 06 Belinda Carlisle - I Get Weak (2) 14 18 Jody Watley - Some Kind of Lover (10) 13 10 Def Leppard - Hysteria (10) 12 17 Terence Trent D'Arby - Wishing Well (1) 11 11 Michael Bolton - Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay (11)10 16 Whitney Houston - Where Do Broken Hearts Go (1) Flashback Extra: Phil Collins "Two Hearts"09 13 Pebbles - Girlfriend (5) 08 03 Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up (1) 07 12 INXS - Devil Inside (2) 06 09 The Jets - Rocket 2 U (6) 05 07 Keith Sweat - I Want Her (5)04 04 Debbie Gibson - Out of the Blue (3) LDD: Prince & The Revolution "Purple Rain" from Anthony, currently stationed in California, to Meryl, who he recently reconnected with a few months ago after 10 years apart...only to discover that she was by now a married woman with two children, leaving him to mourn the love left behind those years ago03 05 Billy Ocean - Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car (1) Flashback Extra: Taylor Dayne "Don't Rush Me"02 02 Richard Marx - Endless Summer Nights (2) 01 01 Michael Jackson - Man in the Mirror (1)Five songs debut this week on AT40, and dropping out are: "Hungry Eyes" by Eric Carmen (LW: 39), "Pump Up the Volume" by M/A/R/R/S (LW: 37), "Love Overboard" by Gladys Knight & The Pips (LW: 36), "Can't Stay Away From You" by Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine (LW: 32), and "Be Still My Beating Heart" by Sting (LW: 22). NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WTOJ, which had a unique "American Top 40" jingle at the start of every hour.
- As happened on 4-23, "Piano in the Dark" received the standard jingle. ("Anything For You" and "Father Figure", in turn, did not.)
- As has been Premiere's penchant in later available 1988 shows, the extras are all Shadoe-era 80s hits.
- Another week with the Spanish-English edit for "Anything For You".
- The best way to describe the story behind the "Shadow Dancing" Extra is to simply call it what it is - Casey's obituary for Andy Gibb, who died on March 10.
- Well, last week saw one Alexander O'Neal + Cherrelle pairing played - this week, sees the other! Wouldn't surprise me if this is the only time they're ever played on back-to-back weeks.
- A noticeably different version of "Pink Cadillac" was played this week; I suspect it's the album version.
- Part of me wonders why Premiere didn't just stick Taylor Dayne's extra as the Hour 2 extra since her own song ended the regular hour, though it could have been a deliberate choice on their part to separate the two.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Love Will Find its Way to You" by Reba McEntire
- #1 on the Album chart: Soundtrack to Dirty Dancing
- #1 on the Dance chart: "Don't Look Any Further" by The Kane Gang
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "Wishing Well"

- Casey had a story behind the origin of the word "utopia", which extended to include that the band with that name was intended to be a "perfect band". Some perfect band - they'd have only 4 weeks left on the entire Hot 100 with this song, proceed to go one notch higher, and then never be heard from again!
- Suffice it to say that I had to do some research to get the islands' spelling right in the first LDD. Noooo idea how close I came on the woman's name, though.
- "This Guy's in Love With You" was in fact an impromptu extra, and NOT a LDD as was indicated on the original cue sheet. This means that in fact it's 12-11-82 that is the first show to truly have 3 LDDs.
- "Isn't Life Strange" was fairly long - not sure of exact length - and started playing while Casey was finishing reading its LDD letter.
- Come to think of it...when was the last time where all four Premiere extras were sung by women? Quite interesting to have that happen this week.
- #1 on the Country chart: "Honky Tonk Blues" by Charley Pride
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Stomp"
- #1 on the Album chart: The Wall by Pink Floyd

Sorry I overlooked the Herb Alpert extra BTW.
Anyway, once again - for an apparently unprecedented NINTH CONSECUTIVE WEEKEND - there will be two AT40 shows from one decade (again, two '80s shows with one '70s show). This is April. November can't come soon enough. Anyway, here comes another two-part preview. Starting with the '70s first
"AT40: The '70s" this week presents 4/17/1976 which previously aired in 2009
Seven songs debuted this week: "Get Up And Boogie (That's Right!)" - The Silver Convention (#34) "Silly Love Songs" - Paul McCartney & Wings (#35) "Come On Over" - Olivia Newton-John (#36) "Union Man" - Cate Brothers (#37) "Happy Music" - Blackbyrds (#38) "Don't Pull Your Love/Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" - Glen Campbell (#39) "Shout It Out Loud" - KISS (#40)
Seven songs fell off this week: "Tangerine" - Salsoul Orchestra (#25) "Only Love Is Real" - Carole King (#28) "Looking For Space" - John Denver (#29) "Love Fire" - Jigsaw (#30) "You'll Lose A Good Thing" - Freddy Fender (#32) "We Can't Hide It Anymore" - Larry Santos (#36) "Hit The Road Jack" - The Stampeders (#40)
Biggest Mover: "Trying To Get The Feeling Again" - Barry Manilow (#37 to #25) Biggest Dropper: "All By Myself" - Eric Carmen (#19 to #33)
Original extras: "Hanky Panky" - Tommy James & The Shondells This extra was deleted by Premiere back in 2009 but it does appear this time around - albeit as an optional extra.
Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "Turn The Beat Around" - Vickie Sue Robinson (#91) Hour #2: "Kiss And Say Goodbye" - The Manhattans (#99; debuted) Hour #3: "Hanky Panky" - Tommy James & The Shondells (original AT40 extra)
'80s preview is coming up soon.
