Yep, it is getting close to that time of year - time for stations 'flip the switch' to all-Christmas music. Last year, we had stations do it before Halloween. A bunch of them did it the first week of November and most of them had it by Thanksgiving. Personally, I prefer it the week of Thanksgiving, but I am not a MD/PD. :) Post in here when your local station 'flips' or other thoughts. :) EDIT: Here's the annual list from 10000watts.com, including dates of flip. www.100000watts.com/specials.asp

It will be interesting to see what happens in Boston with WODS having flipped from Classic Hits to CHR as Amp 103.3, and with WHBA (formerly WFNX) now a Clear Channel-owned Adult Hits station ("101.7 The Harbor").
CBS probably won't put Christmas music on 103.3 this year, but may potentially put it on sister Hot AC station Mix 104.1. Greater Media has traditionally put Christmas music on WODS' former direct competitor WROR, but may now see it fit to put on AC Magic 106.7 instead. And it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility that The Harbor could go all-Christmas.
So to sum it up, we could potentially see three Christmas stations this year, and/or have all of the Christmas stations be ones that haven't traditionally gone that route. Greater Media could also possibly have a monopoly on Christmas this year, but somehow that seems unlikely.

I try not to listen to Christmas music until Black Friday; as such, I prefer that the stations I listen to don't flip until after that. I think I'm going to flip my Internet station (not to all-Christmas, but including holiday programming) on December 1, increasing the amount of holiday music in rotation gradually week-by-week. Of course, with satellite radio, we usually just switch to Sirius/XM Holly (which I think flips on Thanksgiving) when we want to hear Christmas music and stay on normal stations otherwise.

Don't know who will do it here this year yet. Last year it was Coast, and we had 2 the year before. I hope we get 2 again this year!

My AC station (KXLT) just announced they'll kick it off Saturday November 10th. That's a week earlier than the past couple years.

Coast 92.1 FM in Sarasota 'flipped the switch' as did Easy 93.1 FM in Cape May, NJ (are they still broadcasting??).

WLEV in Allentown (my AC station) used to have a yearly tradition of flipping to Christmas music at 6 pm on Thanksgiving. They stopped 2 years ago, though. Now they usually start the 2nd week of November. That leads competing station WBEB in Philly to flip earlier than they previously did with no competition. They used to flip the weekend before Thanksgiving, now they do it during the middle of the week before.

I see that WLEV in Allentown hasn't switched yet. Holiday music should start right after Thanksgiving (or day of). Anytime before that, it's too early.
I don't recall the local trends back in the 90s and such- but Billboard noted that AC stations switching to all-holiday music didn't really become a trend until the early 2000s. Did anyone notice that in their areas?

Did anyone notice that in their areas? Wikipedia attributes it to 9/11 and people needing the spirit uplift. I think that combined with pressure by advertisers to push holidays (and holiday sales) makes total sense.

I see that WLEV in Allentown hasn't switched yet. They did late yesterday! Now I can come home over break and listen to Christmas music on the radio.

I believe I noticed they had switched a few days after posting the quoted message, but I couldn't find this thread to post again.
