ARIANA HITS HARD: FINALLY BREAKS PAST MINAJ
WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 21, 2014

Ariana Grande’s “Break Free” hits number 1 this week, after four weeks straight at No. 2 behind Nicki Minaj’s monster smash, “Anaconda.” “Free” is the follow-up to “Problem,” which debuted atop the chart in April – staying at No. 1 for 4 weeks. This dance track has had a more traditional climb on the top 30, debuting at No. 27, entering the top 10 in its fifth week. “Love Me Harder” is the third single from Grande’s album My Everything, and earns a lofty No. 8 debut after a radio premiere. The track features R&B singer The Weeknd, whose “Wicked Games” peaked at No. 16 last year.

Up 12 – 10 in its fourth week, “Break The Rules” becomes Charli XCX’s fourth top 10 this year alone. All five of her chart entries are top 10 hits; time will tell if “Rules” follows in the footsteps of her two No.1 hits, “Fancy” and “Boom Clap.”

Shawn Mendes shoots into the top 20 with his ballad, “Life of the Party.” The single zooms 22 – 13 this week. Of the thirteen songs to reach No. 1 in 2014, only 2 leading males have hit the top. Will Mendes join Pitbull and John Legend on this list? We shall see, as we enter the fourth quarter of the year next week.

Vance Joy’s laidback rock song, “Riptide,” is the top debut of the week, entering at No. 22 (after one week bubbling under). Maroon 5’s “Animals,” the follow-up to their No. 12 hit, “Maps,” makes a big splash on the chart, entering at No. 25 after a radio premiere this week.

Eight weeks ago, Jessie J., Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj’s joint single, “Bang Bang,” first appeared in the bubbling under – disappearing after 4 weeks (peaking at No. 37). Clearly, the song has just recently grown on me, as evidenced by its No. 28 debut on the top 30. Jessie J’s only other chart entry was in 2011, with “Domino,” which peaked at No. 16.

Jennifer Lopez ‘s “Booty” also makes its official debut on the chart, at No. 30 after the premiere of its saucy video featuring Iggy Azalea, who has two No. 1’s under her belt this year. “Booty” is the third release from J. Lo’s A.K.A.. Lead single “I Luh Ya Papi” failed to chart, bubbling under at No. 37 earlier this year. Second single, “First Love” was a much bigger success, maxing out at No. 3 in June.

Ariana Grande not only earns the top spot on the Airpower Top 30 with "Break Free," but she is also the top streaming artist of the week, with 24 plays. It is Grande's sixth time earning this title, powered by streams of her album, My Everything. The album cuts "One Last Time" and "Hands On Me" are her most played songs this week (5 streams each). Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" manages to grab the title of top streaming song for a fifth straight week, despite falling from #1 on the Airpower Top 30. The catchy track was played 11 times on Spotify this week, according to Last.fm.

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 28, 2014

Ariana Grande & Zedd stay put at No. 1 for a second week with “Break Free,” despite early odds favoring Nicki Minaj’s return to the top with her four-week No. 1 hit, “Anaconda.” Grande was the musical guest on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live this past week, performing “Break Free,” as well as her new single featuring The Weeknd, “Love Me Harder,” which bounds 8 – 3.

It is no secret that I tend to favor female musicians, but this week, three songs sung by men zoom into the top 10. Maroon 5’s “Animal” catapults 25 – 5 in its second week, as its controversial music video premieres. The song easily out peaks the band’s previous single, “Maps,” which hit No. 12 earlier this year. “Animals” is the band’s eleventh song to hit the top 10 (since the chart’s birth in February 2005). Shawn Mendes’ “Life of the Party” shoots 13 – 9 in its fourth week, as Nick Jonas flies 27 – 10 with his first solo chart hit, “Jealous.” He last appeared in the top 10 in 2008 as part of the Jonas Brothers, with “Burning Up” (No. 6).

DJ/producer Alesso’s “Heroes (We Could Be)” makes its official top 30 debut, entering at No. 17 after three weeks bubbling under (the 10 “unofficial” positions below the top 30). The catchy dance track features the vocals of Tove Lo, whose solo hit, “Habits (Stay High)” re-enters at No. 30 this week. It hit No. 14 in August before falling out a few weeks ago. One Direction also makes a big debut, with “Steal My Girl” at No. 26. It is the first single from their upcoming album, Four.

Ariana Grande is the top streaming artist again, for the seventh week, with 28 plays - mainly stemming from the tracks off her album, My Everything. Her top streamed track is the album cut, "One Last Time," which ties Alesso's "Heroes (We Could Be)" as the top streaming song of the week, each with 8 plays. "Time" is Grande's second time at No. 1 on the streaming songs chart; she hit No. 1 for four weeks with "Problem" (which spent the same number of weeks at No. 1 on the official Airpower Top 30). "One Last Time" is not the first non-single to hit No. 1 in streams. Mariah Carey's "Thirsty" and "Money" also earned the highest number of weekly streams following the release of her album Me I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse.

ARIANA GRANDE REPLACES SELF AT NO. 1
WEEK OF OCTOBER 5, 2014

In just its third week on the chart, Ariana Grande & The Weeknd’s new single, “Love Me Harder,” reaches the apex of the top 30, rising 3 – 1. She replaces herself at No. 1, trading places with “Break Free.” It is the third single from Grande’s My Everything – “Problem” debuted at No. 1 in April (staying there for 4 weeks) and aforementioned “Break Free” spent two weeks at No. 1 in September. Grande is only the ninth artist to earn at least three No. 1s from one album, and she is the second artist in 2014 to replace herself at No. 1 (the first being Iggy Azalea, who whose “Fancy” usurped Grande’s “Problem,” on which the rapper is featured.)

Maroon 5 was the musical guest this week on Saturday Night Live, and they performed their No. 12 hit, “Maps,” as well as their new single, “Animals,” which lifts 5 – 3 in its third week on this chart. It matches the peak of their last top 5 hit, “Love Somebody,” which spent three weeks at No. 3 last year. Nick Jonas’ “Jealous” enters the top 5 in its fourth week, ascending 10 – 5.

Girl group/X Factor alumni, Fifth Harmony enters the top 10 with “Bo$$,” in its eleventh week in the top 30. The track had just rebounded to its No. 13 peak last week, and continues its recovery, flying to No. 9 this week. It is the girls’ second top 10 hit; their debut entry, “Miss Movin’ On” peaked at No. 6 in September 2013.

Tinashe’s “Pretend” is the top debut of the week, entering the top 40 at No. 26. The song features A$AP Rocky, and it is the second single off the singer’s Aquarius. It is the follow-up to the No. 5 hit, “2 On,” which stays put at No. 6 this week. New to the bubbling under (unofficial ten positions below the top 30) is Pentatonix, a re-entry from Usher, and the debut single from another X Factor alum, Cece (Frey).

TINASHE REBOUNDS TO "2" ON THE CHART
WEEK OF OCTOBER 12, 2014

Ariana Grande & The Weeknd’s ”Love Me Harder” remains the most popular song of the week for a second time, as her previous two-week No. 1 hit, ”Break Free” falls 2 – 4. Replacing “Free” at No. 2 is R&B newcomer Tinashe, with ”2 On”. In its eleventh charting week, the jam rebounds 6 – 2, past its initial No. 5 peak (where it hit last month). A well-choreographed performance with great vocals on the Jimmy Kimmel Show powered the boost. Maroon 5 and Nick Jonas stay at their respective No. 3 and 5 peaks.

Two weeks ago, Alesso’s dance track, ”Heroes (We Could Be)” topped the weekly Streaming Songs chart. This week, the track ascends 13 – 10, in its third week in the top 30. It is the first top 10 for Alesso, as well as the first for featured artist Tove Lo. Chris Brown’s ”New Flame” continues its own climb, up 17 – 12 in its seventh week – matching the peak of Brown’s previous single, ”Loyal” (which backtracks 16 – 20 this week). Two tracks join the top 20: Tinashe’s mid-tempo, ”Pretend,” up 26 – 16, and One Direction’s ”Steal My Girl,” which flies 24 – 18 in its third charting week.

Sam Smith earns his first official chart entry as a lead artist with ”I’m Not the Only One,” as the In The Only Hour single debuts at No. 28 after 2 weeks bubbling under. It is the follow-up to Smith’s breakout American hit, “Stay With Me,” which failed to chart on the Airpower Top 30 (it peaked inside the bubbling under at No. 33 in June). Acapella YouTube group, Pentatonix, also makes an official debut, with ”La La Latch” at No. 29, which coincidentally is a cover/mash-up of two tracks on which Smith is featured – Disclosure’s No. 6 hit “Latch,” and the non-charting Naughty Boy song, “La La La.”

THE STARS ALIGN FOR AQUARIUS SINGER
WEEK OF OCTOBER 19, 2014

As it earns enough points in its twelfth charting week to be certified Gold (tracks are eligible at the 250-inverse point threshold), Tinashe’s debut hit, ”2 On,” ascends 2 – 1 after an initial rebound last week. The track trades places with Ariana Grande’s third No. 1 hit this year, ”Love Me Harder.” A lyric video for the latter premiered this week; the upcoming official video could possibly help “Harder” regain momentum.

Chris Brown’s ”New Flame” enters the top 10 in its eighth official week, jumping from 12 to 8. It is the fifth single from his album X, which was finally released a month ago. Ever since his debut in 2005 with “Run It,” Brown has accumulated 33 top 30 hits, 17 of which that have hit the top 10. “Fine China,” the lead single from his current album, failed to chart (bubbling under at No. 37), but the three follow-ups did chart: “Don’t Think They Know” (No. 23), “Love More” (19), and current hit, ”Loyal” (12). “Flame” is Brown’s second top 10 hit in 2014; he was featured on Kid Ink’s No. 7 smash, “Show Me.” Also hitting the top 10 is Tinashe, for the second time, with ”Pretend” (16 – 9).

Tove Lo’s ”Habits (Stay High)” resumes its rebound, pulsing 17 – 12 this week, past its No. 14 peak position in August. Meanwhile, Sam Smith earns his first top 20 hit as a lead artist, as ”I’m Not the Only One” zooms 28 – 14.

Gwen Stefani’s new single, ”Baby Don’t Lie,” debuts at No. 23 after a music video premiere this week. It previews Stefani’s upcoming third studio album; the singer has four No. 1’s under her belt, lead by her 2005 giant hit, “Hollaback Girl,” with a 10-week reign. Her first seven solo singles all hit the top 10 on the Airpower Top 30. We shall she if “Baby” brings Stefani back to that territory. Her last top 10 hit was in 2006, with her 2-week No. 1 hit, “The Sweet Escape.”

After earning over 100 streams in the past 2 weeks, Ariana Grande seems to be losing steam, as her weekly plays fall to 26 this week. Still, she is No. 1 on Streaming Artists, tied with Tinashe; it is Grande’s tenth time atop this chart – Tinashe’s first. Both of their overall plays are dispersed among tracks off of their albums My Everything, and Aquarius, while the plays of the No. 3 artist of the week, Gwen Stefani, are exclusively streams of her new single, ”Baby Don’t Lie”. That track enters Streaming Songs at No. 1, with 13 weekly plays.

Tinashe & SchoolBoy Q’s smash ”2 On” is No. 1 for a second week, as the top 3 stays the same for a second week. Tinashe’s second single, ”Pretend,” featuring rapper A$AP Rocky, ascends 9 – 4, becoming the singer’s second top 5 hit. Chris Brown’s ”New Flame” moves up one spot to No. 7.

Sam Smith and Tove Lo both earn their second top 10 hits, and first top 10 hits as lead artists, respectively, this week. Smith’s ”I’m Not the Only One” zooms 14 – 8 in its third week. His first top 10, Disclosure’s ”Latch,” logged 2 weeks at No. 6 in September (and steps 11 – 12 this week). Meanwhile, Tove Lo’s ”Habits (Stay High)” ascends 12 – 10, pushing her first top 10 hit, Alesso’s ”Heroes (We Could Be)” out of its No. 10 peak.

Iggy Azalea’s new single, ”Beg For It,” off her upcoming Reclassified, debuts at No. 16 following its premiere at radio and Spotify, and a performance on Saturday Night Live. Taylor Swift debuts at No. 1 on all three Top Personal Plays charts. Album track, ”Style”, is the highest entry on Top Tracks, with 12 plays in 4 days (I purchased 1989 on Thursday). Her new single, ”Blank Space,” debuts at No. 4 with 8 plays. With 7 album tracks in the top 10 in Top Tracks, 1989 easily enters Top Albums at No. 1, with 64 plays. Swift also debuts on Top Artists at No. 1, with 70 plays. With just 4 days of play, 1989 is already the third-most played album since I began using Last.fm in April (Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande’s most recent albums are No. 1 and 2, respectively).

TOP PERSONAL PLAYS OF OCTOBER 2014
For the month of October, Ariana Grande holds down the No. 1 spot on all three Top Personal Plays charts. She sings 50% of the top 10 entries on Top Tracks, lead by the most-played song of the month, her album track, “Hands On Me,” with 38 plays. Grande is the No. 1 artist of the month, with 166 plays, followed by Tinashe, who has 78 plays. Grande’s My Everything is also the most-played album of the month, with 153 plays, followed by Taylor Swift’s new album this week.

GRANDE FEELS THE LOVE AFTER VIDEO PREMIERE

With the premiere of its sexy new music video, Ariana Grande & The Weeknd’s ”Love Me Harder” rebounds from No. 2, earning a third nonconsecutive week atop the Airpower Top 30. It trades places with Tinashe’s 2-week chart topper, ”2 On,” as its follow-up, ”Pretend”, inches 4 – 3. Chris Brown’s ”New Flame” enters the top 5 in its tenth charting week, rising 7 – 4. It has been two years since Brown has had a top 5 hit (“Don’t Wake Me Up” peaked at No. 3 in October 2012).

Nick Jonas premiered a new remix of his No. 4 hit, ”Jealous”, this week. It transforms the track into a duet with Tinashe, stabilizing the song at No. 5 this week (prior to its premiere, the song was aiming for a tumble out of the top 5). With her two Aquarius singles at No. 2 and 3, Tinashe now has three singles in the top 5 at the same time, and has earned a third top 10 hit.

Based on the (newly-titled) Top Personal Plays charts, it is clear that I am a big fan of Taylor Swift’s new album, 1989. Second single, ”Blank Space,” zooms right into the top 10 in its second charting week, up 18 – 6. It is the second top 10 hit from the album (”Shake It Off” hit No. 5 three months ago), and Swift’s tenth top 10 ever.

In its seventh charting week in the top 30, “Bang Bang,” the joint single by Jessie J., Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj, becomes a top 20 hit, up 22 – 19. It is Jessie’s second top 20 hit; her only other chart entry, “Domino,” hit No. 16 in 2011. It is Grande’s fourth top 20 hit, and Minaj’s thirty-first. DJ Khaled and Mary Lambet make official top 30 debuts this week, after both bubbling under last week.

In its first full 7-day chart week, Taylor Swift’s 1989 powers the singer’s reign on top of all three Top Personal Plays component charts for a second week. Album cut, ”Out of the Woods,” leads the pack, rising 4 – 1 on Top Tracks, with a 163% rise to 21 plays. Despite a 58% increase in plays, last week’s top played track, ”Style,” tumbles to No. 2 (with 19 plays). Considering the fact that Swift sings the top eleven songs on Top Tracks, it is no surprise that she is No. 1 on Top Artists, and on Top Albums for a second week. On both lists, she earns 164 weekly plays, a 134% rise from last week. She easily has the record for the highest weekly plays for a track, artist, and album, since I began tracking my personal plays this April, with Last.fm. Before the release of 1989, the previous weekly high for an artist was on June 8, when Mariah Carey earned 69 weeky plays, thanks to Me… I Am Mariah. The Elusive Chanteuse (which had the previous record on Top Albums that week, with 64 plays). More recently, Gwen Stefani’s ”Baby Don’t Lie” earned 13 weekly plays (October 26), tying the weekly record on Top Tracks held by Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” (September 7).
