Fewer and fewer individuals listen to radio currently, and the number will only shrink in years to come. Just a thought, if that happens, wouldn't the airplay numbers go down meaning that airplay would influence the Hot 100 less without Billboard having to make readjustments? I'm not sure, I don't recall of them ever adjusting the numbers to portray the audience the song is in fact reaching, though? Perhaps it's something they could come up with. From the way I see things, I've always thought that, nowadays, you promote a song on radio so people will be tempted to buy it through Itunes? Radio used to be an outlet for album sales, but as society is evolving, it seems to currently be an outlet for single sales, and with that in mind, I keep questioning why would radio weight more than digital sales?

I'm not sure, I don't recall of them ever adjusting the numbers to portray the audience the song is in fact reaching, though? Perhaps it's something they could come up with. Mediabase do adjust their numbers every now and then, including twice this year, wouldn't that be to improve their accuracy and thus better estimate the audience a song is reaching? I don't see why else they'd be making those adjustments. I keep questioning why would radio weight more than digital sales? Is airplay really weighted higher than digital sales? The average airplay #1 might have 160 million audience on Mediabase. Multiply that by 0.8 to account for the BDS difference then 1.5 as per our estimated formula, and that's a little under 200 chart points. Meanwhile, the average digital #1 might have 250K sales. That's 250 chart points ... more than the average airplay #1. The airplay monster may be currently blocking the digital monster, but "One More Night" is doing very well in all three areas (sales, airplay and streaming) while "Gangnam Style" is only excelling in two. I don't think we've had this current formula around for long enough to deduce that airplay indeed has more influence than sales.

Radio was very much an outlet for single sales back in the 50's and 60's. It's because of the weak album sales of today that things have come full circle.

One of the points I saw brought up about radio was that radio isn't supposed to play the most "requested" song, but instead the most "agreeable" song. As in; even if a song gets 2x as many requests; if a few people don't like it and switch the station, that's enough to override all of the extra requests a song is getting. That's fine and dandy for radio; but what business does "most agreeable" have with the Hot 100, a chart that's meant to be reflecting what's "most popular"; not what's "most popular without an opposing group who hate it". Which is absolutely why airplay shouldn't be the top tier component of the Hot 100 like it is now.
Also Slizzard; if you check that one thread I made about the formula, you'll see I quoted billboard where they said they adjusted the components to downplay sales [when the multipliers had been equal before; so yes airplay is weighted heavier than sales].

If sales had a bigger influence the bottom half of the Hot 100 top 10 wouldn't be full of songs that are in the 20s or even 40s in Digital Songs. The overrating of airplay has above all made the chart stale. While the public has long moved on to new, popular songs, radio tends to linger on for months and months on old hits.

If sales had a bigger influence the bottom half of the Hot 100 top 10 wouldn't be full of songs that are in the 20s or even 40s in Digital Songs. "Die Young": #3 digital, #11 airplay "Locked Out Of Heaven": #2 digital, #12 airplay "As Long As You Love Me": #21 digital, #4 airplay "Too Close": #20 digital, #6 airplay "Let Me Love You ...": #18 digital, #5 airplay 40's? The overrating of airplay has above all made the chart stale. While the public has long moved on to new, popular songs, radio tends to linger on for months and months on old hits. Or maybe people still want to hear those old hits, they're just not buying them anymore since they already bought them back when they first became big? Look at the On-Demand Songs chart where "Lights", "Mercy", "Whistle", "We Are Young", "Call Me Maybe" and "Somebody That I Used To Know" are still in the top 20. Those songs may not be high sellers anymore, but that doesn't mean people have stopped listening to them. I like that airplay and streaming show a much closer representation of when people are actually listening to a song, not just when they originally made the purchase.

Chris Brown and Pink need to start free-falling so Miguel can go Top 10.

I was just thinking. This may have already been answered or it's pretty simple but I'm overthinking like I usually do, lol, but what if someone pulls a Katy releases a remix version of their song to their respective Vevo or Youtube channel, will it get counted for streaming points to the remix or the original? Will they implement the same rule as BB to where they'll choose which song has the most "sales/airplay" (in this case 'streaming points') that week & count it towards that one?

Since remixes and the original song chart together on sales and airplay, I would assume that stays true for streaming. So yes, someone could release 50 remixes on their VEVO channel and get those counted towards the original's Hot 100 points, I think.

Radio is so damn slow with songs....in the UK "Skyfall" was #1 on airplay less than a month after its release. Songs should have 5+ updates every day.

6. RIHANNA – Diamonds: 12121.238 (- 2.858) Already breaking the records. :'( Seems like they might have re-calibrated the audience again. Why can't they go one day just leaving the numbers the way they are?

This is why Mediabase shouldn't be given the attention it gets on chart forums- but, since it's the only one for which someone out there posts daily updates and there is daily info available (via All Access), it's better than nothing. :)

But, Mediabase isn't used for any Billboard charts. And Billboard is THE charts producer. What I meant. :)

Total audiences are different from BDS monitored airplay which Billboard company use to compile it charts, but the chart positions for songs on different airplay charts are pretty accurate compared to that of what appear, especially that of the hot 100 airplay chart, making the info they give to the public not so obsolete, so I don't see where your complaint comes from.
