Yeah I think catalog albums have been seeing a big up-kick these last few years for that very reason... Wal-Mart and Best Buy eager to clear stock of all of the non-current albums. I remember - maybe five or six years ago - when we got numbers some weeks for old Whitney, Janet, Madonna, Mariah albums and many of the albums were only shifting a few dozen per week. I think there was a year where I'm Your Baby Tonight only shifted like thirty copies? Obviously iTunes has helped people purchase hard-to-find or out-of-print albums but I see old hit diva albums in those bins all the time now.

Some eye-popping info:
The top 200 albums of 2012 scanned 82 million and change; the top 200 albums in 2000 scanned 275 million and change- a 75% decline in 12 years.

I'm not really surprised anymore. I expect another slight decline for 2013 but I see the whole album industry changing significantly in 10, 15 years. The youth that have only ever known iTunes and digital music are going to eventually be in the majority of the music buying public and albums, maybe even in their digital form, will be obsolete and playlists, music apps will be the predominant way to consume music.
I remember 2006 being the year I really took notice of the album sales decline... I think it was because the album of the year was High School Musical.

Just in: the Brenda Lee item indeed is a typo- and got official word that SoundScan indeed did start tracking sales in March 1991. I didn't realize Soundscan didn't start until March of 1991. So albums released in 1990 (like Mariah's debut) are missing a lot of sales.

^Yes- have you missed all of the sales discussions over the years? The year 1991 was the known year, but for some time, there was a little uncertainty about when the exact month was (it was narrowed to either January or March).

"For the first time since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking music sales in 1991, the same album finishes as the United States' best-seller for a second year. Adele's "21" triumphed in 2011 and ruled again in 2012."
Adele is going to be the voice of this generation.

Yah- if it were just cassettes, wouldn't it say as much? My inquiry on that one wasn't answered.

^Really? Google.
That format died in the late 70s.
