^Another typo. :) Last year's report listed 1991.
Here's what the top 10 acts of the SS era added to their 1991-present sums in 2012:
Beatles: + 859,000
Tim McGraw: +824,000
Eminem: +784,000
Alan Jackson: + 770,000
Pink Floyd: + 741,000
George Strait: + 622,000
Metallica: + 472,000
Mariah Carey: +327,000
Celine Dion: +267,000
Garth Brooks: + 56,000

There was no catalog albums top 10 for the past few years in the Business Wire releases, from what I can tell.

It was an issue of Billboard that listed the Top Genre Albums. I posted them from that Billboard issue.

I don't see how "Rockin Around the Christmas Tree" could have sold that much, even if we are talking about covers as well. That would mean that nearly everyone who bought the song bought a cover version. Why would they do that? And surely we would've seen loads of those cover versions popping up on the Itunes chart for the song to have sold nearly 2 million.

^Yah- doesn't make sense, on the surface.
Here is album sales info by format for 2012:
CD: 193.378 million (-13.5% from 223.507 million in 2011)
Digital: 117.676 million (+14.1% from 103.112 million in 2011)
Vinyl: 4.551 million (+17.7% from 3.868 million in 2011)
Other: 348,000 (+324.4% from 82,000 in 2011)
What would constitute Other, aside from cassettes?

Just in: the Brenda Lee item indeed is a typo- and got official word that SoundScan indeed did start tracking sales in March 1991.

So all the people claiming racism against PSY for lack of radio and even with ALL the media, YouTube, Billboard pimping exposure AND no album, it is only #9 in sales? And, it barely outsold OMN, which some claimed was not a "legit" No. 1. (Of course, the second single off a best-selling album.) This just cracks me up. Talk about a hit THAT seemed bigger than it was. Look at which song is currently the no. 3 best selling song of the country despite being declared dead and unwanted by radio. The only thing that seems bigger than it is radio's liberty to play what people want to hear. Was PSY and OMN released at the same time? |

He then started using 1991- I don't recall him using "March 1991," but not saying it's not possible. :And you're welcome. :)
Rodze, the e-mail didn't indicate what would be No. 1- but, I'm guessing all entries listed would advance one, and then what would be missing is No. 10?

I don't think it's like that because based on the weekly information "Locked Out of Heaven" and "Gangnam Style" are right. I don't know if any song has sold 1,775,000 at all. Maybe it was supposed to be 175,000. Was PSY and OMN released at the same time? I don't know the exact dates, but GS has been on the Hot 100 for 17 weeks, while OMN already has 28 weeks. So, I imagine OMN is older. |

Compilations usually have a big impact on studio albums- except for Michael Jackson and maybe a few others.
Shania Twain's compilation had eight tracks from Come on Over.
