Time for another anniversary. It was 20 years ago, this week, that Classic AT40 underwent it's final transition. AT40 spent a year using Billboard's Top 40 Airplay Monitor (now Hot 100 Airplay) chart. With this first regular chart of 1993 (the previous two weeks were used to count down the top 100 of 1992), AT40 switched over to the Mainstream Top 40 chart (launched in the pages of Billboard in October 1992). Shadoe Stevens, subtly, alluded to the chart change during the show's intro ("Are you ready to dive into the musical mainstream?").
While not quite as drastic as the previous chart changeover (pulsemusic.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=nostalgia&action=display&thread=111939), 25% of the chart turning over (9 debuts, 1 re-entry) is still pretty jarring. Three of the droppers -- "Sweet Thing", "Here We Go (Again)", and "Mr. Wendal" -- would, eventually, return when they caught up to the new chart.
This is the chart that AT40 would use up until it's cancellation in January 1995.
