2014 SWH Top 75 Countdown
Chart Tracking Period: 5 January 2014 - 27 December 2014 (51 Weeks)
Comment(s) - 1 song which appeared on the weekly Top 10 did not qualify for the end-of-year chart. - The highest charting non-Number One song is “All Of Me” by John Legend. The track is at No.4 on the year-end chart, earning a 13-week chart run with 64 points despite peaking at No.2 only. - The lowest charting No.1 song is “Sail” by AWOLNATION. The track is at No.53 on the end-of-year countdown, earning a 6-week chart run with 29 points. - With a total of 7 songs on the year-end chart, The 1975 has the most number of appearances on the SWH Top 75 Countdown of 2014.
Awards MOST OUTSTANDING MALE ARTISTES 1. Ed Sheeran - 188 - I See Fire: 44 - Thinking Out Loud: 41 - All Of The Stars: 39 - Sing: 32 - Don’t: 32 From the outset, there was no real competition to talk about. Ed Sheeran’s sophomore effort “x” (pronounced “multiply”) was a phenomenal release, topping the UK Albums Chart for a jaw-dropping total of twelve weeks. The same album has also found crossover success in Australia, Canada, Germany and the United States, hitting No.1 in those places as well. The LP has spawned three singles, all of which earned respectable year-end positions in the upper echelon of the SWH Top 75 Countdown. Elsewhere, Sheeran has also contributed to the movie soundtracks of “The Fault In Our Stars” and “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”, with the lead singles from each OST topping the weekly chart. Sheeran may not have the best performance out of all the artistes in this year’s list (his highest year-end placing is No.22 for “I See Fire”), but he is very consistent in delivering competent releases, a rarity these days. From being last year’s third most outstanding male artiste, Ed Sheeran thus climbs up to the top of the testosterone mountain in 2014, earning his keep as the best male artiste of the year. 2. John Legend - 64 - All Of Me: 64 Just like Ben Howard, John Legend earns his stripes as one of the most outstanding male artistes of the year with only one charting single. “All Of Me” is the third release off his latest album “Love In The Future”, topping charts all around the world in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, and the United States. Possibly joining the ranks of overplayed wedding pop songs which also features the likes of Whitney Houston, Jason Mraz and Secondhand Serenade, “All Of Me” has spread itself across the airwaves of 2014 in its honey-like saccharine and unabashed profession of love, undoubtedly a tribute to Legend’s wife Chrissy Teigen (or so we hope). Legend’s mastery of piano ballads has always been virtually unmatched, and “All Of Me” exemplifies his adeptness at reducing people to weak-kneed puddles of tears and wistful sighs. For that, he is the second most outstanding male artiste for the year. 3. Ben Howard - 62 - I Forget Where We Were: 62 One of the most promising indie folk acts to hail from London in recent years, Ben Howard has polished his musical craft over the past three years, coming a long way from his debut album “Every Kingdom” which was released back in 2011. The title track and lead single off his sophomore effort “I Forget Where We Were” encapsulates this progress. In a world of pop music replete with references to New York, Miami and Tokyo, it’s refreshing to have a change of geographical name-drops to places like Syria and the Great Dividing Range. Howard is also a lyrical savant, expertly utilises symbolism (“the thistle and the burr”) to convey intriguing insights about the development and decay of relationships. It is little wonder that his latest album topped the UK and Scottish album charts, and the title track, in turn, emerges as one of the Top 5 songs of the year. Even though this is Howard’s sole charting single, “I Forget Where We Were” stands out above the cesspool of mediocrity, allowing him to emerge as the third biggest male artiste of 2014.
MOST OUTSTANDING FEMALE ARTISTES 1. Lorde - 149 - Team: 69 - Glory And Gore: 50 - Yellow Flicker Beat: 30 Ever derisive of popular culture in songs like “Team” and “Glory And Gore”, Lorde is a breath of fresh air as she amalgamates electronica, pop and rock to create a unique and distinctive sound, setting herself apart both lyrically and stylistically. This has allowed her to establish herself as the antithesis to the bland, repetitive and homogenous pop which so often clogs up the Mainstream Top 40, proving that quality music and success are not mutually exclusive. Her debut album “Pure Heroine” has scored an impressive 79% aggregate rating on Metacritic, while simultaneously going multi-platinum in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. Elsewhere, she has even contributed to the soundtrack for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1”, from which “Yellow Flicker Beat” was taken. She almost claimed the prestigious honours of having the No.1 song of 2014, eventually losing out to Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” by a hair’s breadth. Still, with “Team” being the second best song of the year, and a multitude of achievements under her belt at the tender age of eighteen, 2015 is shaping up to be an exciting year for this promising singer-songwriter. 2. Charli XCX - 73.5 - Boom Clap: 57 - Fancy [with Iggy Azalea]: 33/2 = 16.5 Going by the moniker Charli XCX, Charlotte Emma Aitchison finally scores her big break this year. She did come close to scoring a breakthrough a couple of years ago when she recorded “I Love It” with formerly relevant DJ duo Icona Pop. However, it took her an arduous wait until 2014 to finally make it big, etching her presence in the catchy chorus of Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy”, a collaboration which hit the jackpot for both artistes. Charli XCX then proceeded to cement her credibility as a solo singer with her contribution of the infectious “Boom Clap” to the soundtrack for “The Fault In Our Stars”, which became her first No.1 single on the weekly Top 10. The song would eventually become one of the Top 10 songs for 2014. Vivacious and possessing a knack for crafting irresistible sing-along tunes, Charli XCX fully deserves to be the second most outstanding female artiste for the year. 3. Birdy - 67 - Light Me Up: 38 - Words As Weapons: 29 Jasmine van den Bogaerde drops down one placing this year, settling for the No.3 position on the tally of most outstanding female artistes. Better known as Birdy, she has spent 2014 riding on the coattails of success of her second studio album “Fire Within”. The LP is surprisingly mature and dark for an eighteen year-old, with Birdy displaying her deft lyricism and firm grasp of imagery best on tracks like “Strange Birds”. So maybe her choice of singles (“Light Me Up” and “Words As Weapons”) weren’t the most effective, but her voice still manages to soothe and uplift, being comforting and haunting all at once. A promising young musician, it is hoped that 2015 will see Birdy soaring with even more impressive material.
MOST OUTSTANDING GROUPS/BANDS 1. The 1975 - 324 [Hotshot Artiste of 2014] - Robbers: 67 - Girls: 58 - Settle Down: 58 - Sex: 46 - Heart Out: 42 - The City: 37 - Chocolate: 16 For the previous four end-of-year charts, female artistes (namely Taylor Swift and Birdy) essentially monopolised the “Hotshot Artiste of the Year” award. 2014 marks the first time when a group or band manages to claim this prestigious award, and it is The 1975 who have proven themselves to be the most accomplished act this year. They flood the 2014 SWH Top 75 Countdown with an impressive seven entries, four of which topped the weekly charts for a combined total of seven weeks. Such chart success does not come unjustified; the band’s self-titled debut album has been described as a “soundtrack to [the band’s] formative years”, and The 1975’s music explores themes of love, sex, drug use, materialism, hedonism and self-destructive tendencies. Rich with potent imagery (as in the Bonnie and Clyde inspired love song “Robbers”), cheeky innuendo (as in “Head. Cars. Banging”) and confessional lyrics, Matthew Healy and company exhibit a rare vulnerability and relatability. It is with such charisma that The 1975 lands three songs in the Top 10 territory of the year-end countdown, and “Robbers” is the third most successful single of 2014. Many will dismiss The 1975 as a one-hit wonder, but this band’s original sound and lyrical sensitivity might just allow them to extend their longevity in the music industry. 2. The Script - 78 - Superheroes: 54 - No Good In Goodbye: 24 Last year’s most outstanding group or band drops down to the No.2 position this year, unfortunately. With the release of The Script’s fourth studio album titled “No Sound Without Silence”, Danny O’Donoghue and company are back with their signature uplifting power anthems (a la “Superheroes”) and fancy wordplay (the entire chorus of “No Good In Goodbye” is dedicated to this). Well-worn formula rinsed and repeated over three albums too many? Perhaps. Then again, there is no need to fix something which isn’t broken. While “No Good In Goodbye” only attained a modest chart run, peaking at the No.5 position, “Superheroes” went on to claim two weeks atop the weekly chart, narrowly missing the Top 10 territory on the end-of-year listing. The band is set to embark on their third concert tour next year, making a stop by Singapore to perform at the Indoor Stadium. It is hoped that 2015 will shape up to be an even better year for this Irish band. 3. A Great Big World - 70.5 - Say Something [with Christina Aguilera]: 51/2 = 25.5 - Already Home: 45 Comprising Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino, A Great Big World scored their breakthrough this year with the release of “Say Something”, a massive collaboration with pop veteran Christina Aguilera. Utterly haunting and poignant in its exploration of sadness, regret and the disintegration of a relationship, it is a heart-wrenching song fully deserving of the hype surrounding it. Taken together with the duo’s other offering “Already Home”, A Great Big World scores a cumulative total of three weeks at the No.1 spot on the weekly Top 10, with both charting singles making the Top 20 on the year-end listing. Their success has earned them the honours of being the third most outstanding group or band of 2014.

SWH Top 10 Countdown [Issue 290 / Week 6 of 2015: 8 February - 14 February]
Bubbling Under Track of the Week Song Title: Sugar Artiste(s): Maroon 5 Album: V
Chart 01 {01}. Uma Thurman - Fall Out Boy//Peak Position: 1 {2}, Week Count: 3, Points: 25 02 {02}. Style - Taylor Swift//Peak Position: 1 {3}, Week Count: 5, Points: 48 03 {03}. Up - Olly Murs ft Demi Lovato//Peak Position: 2, Week Count: 4, Points: 32 04 {NEW}. One Last Time - Ariana Grande//Peak Position: 4, Week Count: 1, Points: 7 05 {NEW}. Love Me Like You Do - Ellie Goulding//Peak Position: 5, Week Count: 1, Points: 6 06 {04}. Only One - Kanye West ft Paul McCartney//Peak Position: 3, Week Count: 4, Points: 24 07 {05}. Elastic Heart - Sia ft The Weeknd & Diplo//Peak Position: 5, Week Count: 2, Points: 10 08 {06}. Blame - Calvin Harris ft John Newman//Peak Position: 3, Week Count: 7, Points: 37 09 {07}. Cherry Wine [Live] - Hozier//Peak Position: 1 {3}, Week Count: 8, Points: 58 10 {09}. Blank Space - Taylor Swift//Peak Position: 1 {4}, Week Count: 13, Points: 78
Falloff(s) 08. Night Changes - One Direction//Peak Position: 2, Week Count: 5, Points: 34 10. Lost Stars - Adam Levine//Peak Position: 1 {3}, Week Count: 16, Points: 81
Comment(s) 01. Adam Levine’s “Lost Stars” finally falls off the Top 10 this week. It is the seventh single in chart history to clock a chart run lasting at least fifteen weeks, and its longevity has only ever been surpassed by one other song. “Payphone” by Maroon 5 (which is also fronted by lead singer Adam Levine) featuring Wiz Khalifa clocked a monstrous eighteen week chart run back in 2012, and it eventually became the No.1 song of the year. Therefore, Adam Levine holds the distinction of being the artiste of the two singles with the longest chart runs in the history of the SWH Top 10 Countdown thus far.

SWH Top 10 Countdown [Issue 291 / Week 7 of 2015: 15 February - 21 February]
Bubbling Under Track of the Week Song Title: Sugar Artiste(s): Maroon 5 Album: V
Chart 01 {02}. Style - Taylor Swift//Peak Position: 1 {4}, Week Count: 6, Points: 58 02 {04}. One Last Time - Ariana Grande//Peak Position: 2, Week Count: 2, Points: 16 03 {01}. Uma Thurman - Fall Out Boy//Peak Position: 1 {2}, Week Count: 4, Points: 33 04 {05}. Love Me Like You Do - Ellie Goulding//Peak Position: 4, Week Count: 2, Points: 13 05 {NEW}. Somebody - Natalie La Rose ft Jeremih//Peak Position: 5, Week Count: 1, Points: 6 06 {03}. Up - Olly Murs ft Demi Lovato//Peak Position: 2, Week Count: 5, Points: 37 07 {06}. Only One - Kanye West ft Paul McCartney//Peak Position: 3, Week Count: 5, Points: 28 08 {07}. Elastic Heart - Sia ft The Weeknd & Diplo//Peak Position: 5, Week Count: 3, Points: 13 09 {08}. Blame - Calvin Harris ft John Newman//Peak Position: 3, Week Count: 8, Points: 39 10 {09}. Cherry Wine [Live] - Hozier//Peak Position: 1 {3}, Week Count: 9, Points: 59
Falloff(s) 10. Blank Space - Taylor Swift//Peak Position: 1 {4}, Week Count: 13, Points: 78
Comment(s) 01. Taylor Swift rebounds to the top of the chart this week with “Style”, extending the single’s cumulative reign at the No.1 position to four weeks. With this resurgence back to the peak, “Style” becomes the eleventh song in chart history to top the countdown for at least four weeks. Coincidentally, the previous track to achieve such a feat is “Blank Space”, a song also from Taylor Swift. The latter topped the chart from 9 November 2014 to 6 December 2014, and has just fallen off from the Top 10 this week. 02. A rebound back to the pinnacle of the chart is rather uncommon. The last time such a phenomenon occurred was in 2012, when Fun.’s “Some Nights” was replaced by Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake” at the No.1 position from 1 July 2012 to 7 July 2012. Thereafter, Fun. reclaimed their placing at the summit of the chart for a single week.
