Only four female artists (3 solo) have made the Top 10 in 2003. Some of the formats biggest names have released new material, and no matter it's quality it seems to get stuck in the 10-20 range on the chart. Just look at this list:
Shania Twain - "Up!" (#12) Wynonna - "What The World Needs" (#14) Reba McEntire - "I'm Gonna Take That Mountain" (#14) Deana Carter - "There's No Limit" (#14) Sara Evans - "Backseat Of A Greyhound Bus" (#16) Jennifer Hanson - "Beautiful Goodbye" (#16) Jessica Andrews - "There's More To Me Than You" (#17) Patty Loveless - "Lovin' All Night" (#18) Jo Dee Messina - "Was That My Life" (#21) Faith Hill - "When The Lights Go Down" (#26) Faith Hill - "You're Still Here" (#28) Terri Clark - "Three Mississippi" (#30)
Comparitively these songs have made the Top 10 from women:
Dixie Chicks - "Travelin' Soldier" (#1) Terri Clark - "I Just Wanna Be Mad" (#2) Martina McBride - "This One's For The Girls" (#3) Shania Twain - "Forever And For Always" (#4) Martina McBride - "Concrete Angel" (#5)
No other female songs have made the Top 10 at all. How disappointing. It's as if radio only allows one female song into high rotation at any one time and these five songs have occupied that spot for the entire year.

seems like country radio is shifting toward all male radio for some reason. Not sure what the reason is. Only thing I can possibly come up with is that station's main demographic doesn't want songs from ladies for the most part.

That is crazy , I can't believe that there have been only five females (solo or band) in the top ten this year. Wtf is going on? It's a shame to because all but the shania track deserved to be top ten

Country radio is becoming nearly unlistenable for me right now. Since I typically prefer female singers over male singers, I havemn't been listening to country radio all that much lately (and my station is actually much better about balance than the charts are).
I really don't understand why so many great songs by female artists are being ignored, or have to stall in the teens. IMO, most of these songs are better than the songs that are going top 10/top5 by the male artists. I still buy the albums of the artists I like, but country radio is really driving me away.

Another month passes and still no female songs make the Top 10.
[/li][li]Wynonna's "Heaven Help Me" stalled at #37. [/li][li]Sherrie Austin's "Streets Of Heaven" peaked at #18. [/li][li]Jo Dee Messina's "I Wish" is done on Mediabase which would give her a BB peak of #17. [/li][li]Shania's "She's Not Just A Pretty Face" is down to +27 and is stuck at #13. [/li][li]Patty Loveless hasn't made the Top 40 yet despite an amazing song with "On Your Way Home".
Sara Evans' "Perfect" and Martina's "In My Daugher's Eyes" are still plugging along. We'll see if they can break through.
Terri Clark seems next in line for the Top 10, but I wouldn't be surprised if the song died tomorrow.

I still haven't given up on Shania and Terri making the top 10, but things aren't really much better yet. Martina will probably make the top 10. Not so sure about Sara, though I'd like her too. Carolyn Dawn Johnson was off to a pretty strong start. Her bullet has shrunk, but now that she's jumped into Billboard's top 40 (#37), she should pick up ACC spins and increase her bullet again.

I agree about the radio. It is getting pretty bad. I am fortunate though to have Satellite Radio and they balance it pretty well. It is the only way I would have been able to hear Mila Mason's "Maybe Maybe Not", "Gone From Love Too Long", and "I Need A Vacation". All are songs I think are worthy to be in the top 40.

Streets of Heaven peaked at #18?!!!! I thought for sure that song would've gone to #1, possibly even been Sherrie's "I Hope You Dance". Guess I miss called that one. You know what the problem is, don't you? It's that I lost my PD gig at my country station in November of 2002. Without me in the Industry, the right songs aren't getting played.

I believe that she is on an independent label. That probably is the most likely reason why...coupled with her female gender.

This is very disappointing. Country radio just isn't how it used to be, and I fear it's only going to get worse, with a few select male artists pulling in #1 after #1 after #1 effortlessly (Toby Keith, for instance) while women are barred by an oubilette in most instances from the airwaves.
If the Dixie Chicks chose not to speak their minds, they could well be winning the ladies over with more girl power and getting more #1 hits, But though I think they'll still pull in strong sales from here, they may never see the Top 10 again depending on how stubborn stations still are after that one simple comment.
In my opinion, I happen to think country radio is getting rather sexist, and are more prejudiced than any other radio format. They are reluctant to play gay artists, they are reluctant to play artists with other religious backgrounds, etc.
Personally, though it may break some traditions, I think country radio should be divided into two formats, given how the nation has become the most polarized since perhaps the Civil War. Then again, that may tear the industry apart, and this is what makes this issue so sad to see how the heck female artists and emerging country artists are going to have their efforts pay off.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

"This Love" by LeAnn Rimes is simply undeniable. She'll be the first solo artist in over a year and a half to hit number one with "This Love"

It's the best things she's released in years, but it's not going to happen. She's only had one number one in her entire career and that was at the peak of Blue-mania. She'll be lucky to crack the Top 40.

I like "This Love" as well. Is LeAnn Rimes unfortunately suffering to any kind of backlash due to testing the waters on pop radio with her last album?

Well, it's now official. Rebecca Lynn Howard's single "I Need a Vacation" looks like it will be the theme song regarding her relationship with MCA. The second single from the upcoming album is now dead, which makes one wonder whether MCA will be releasing the album at all or giving her walking papers. That is truly a shame, as she is the real deal and her fate shouldn't be left in the hands of incompetents at the label. wow...

Three months pass, and finally there's some Top 5 action for the ladies with Terri Clark's "I Wanna Do It All" and Martina's "In My Daughter's Eyes" breaking through. Neither song got the Top spot though.
[/li][li]Sara Evans is still moving up with "Perfect" and has cracked the Top 10. [/li][li]Shania didn't make it much farther after my last post, eventually sneaking into the Top 10 at #9. [/li][li]LeAnn Rimes stalled at #37. [/li][li]Patty Loveless peaked at #28. [/li][li]Reba's slowed down with "Somebody". [/li][li]Shania's "It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing" is off to a slow start. [/li][li]Ditto for Lee Ann Womack's comeback "The Wrong Girl". [/li][li]Wynonna's "Flies On The Butter" is not taking off either. [/li][li]Lorrie Morgan bombed with her comeback attempt, "Do You Still Want To Buy Me That Drink".
A couple of bright spots, but otherwise the female stuff is still falling through the cracks.

I guess one bright spot for the females is "Passenger Seat" by SHeDAISY. It's still climbing, but quite a bit more slowly since the weekend. On the Mediabase Average Move chart it had a huge decline of 24 positions to 34th, just since Sunday. It's still climbing on the Overal Spins chart, where it's at 26 today. Does anyone know how their Average Move chart is derived? When you look at it, it looks more or less random to my eyes. Average Move: www.mmr247.com/mmrweb/AllAccess/Charts.asp?OB=20If that link just presents a blank chart, go the following link and then go back to the one above... then it will work. Overal Spins: www.mmr247.com/mmrweb/AllAccess/Charts.asp?format=c1R&showtopn=500
