My impeccable intuition tells me the only thing big is her upper chest area. She need to sneak away one night with Maxwell and you'll see an inspired Mimi hitting the top of her register with ease honey.

Sounds like this project will either finish off her commercial potency or at least set her up for a respectable run at all the award shows next year. I don't think she has a clue of what she's doing whether its professionally or musically anymore. At her vocal best these days, she's still a deep well for hits albeit more so for the mature record listener. Her songwriting could use a new pen because she's approaching on self parody with the last few songs released. She sounds like she has severe writer's constipation.
Her, Toni B & MJB really need to get a grip and realize that being older doesn't mean you are finished but more so as in taking your place among the legends and teaching the Beyonce's, Christina's & Alicia's how to adept with the ebbs & flows of the industry. Patti, Chaka & Donna had no qualms about it when it was their turn.

She didn't write Almost Home and the parts she sung in #Beautiful that she wrote was not a issue. Songwriting is not the problem, decision making and production is. She and Mary J Blige have a couple of albums to go before the venture into Anita Baker, Chaka Khan territory. I'm not even sure what Toni Braxton has to do with subject at hand she hasn't been relevant since the mid 90's.

All of them are in their mid-40's and are veterans of the music biz who have passed their commercial prime. If your statement about MJB & Mariah being a few albums away from shifting towards mature music was made in 2007 then I would have agreed. But its 2013 and their respective audiences have diminished greatly. If they were still hot to trot then they wouldn't suffer from severe album pushbacks and derailed singles. You are a Janelle Monae fan and her music is timeless and crosses age gaps, thats what MJB & Mimi need to be doing. Anita always made the same type of music so she didn't have to transition, she just continues to be her just like Sade.
I forgot all about "Almost Home" and thank God she didn't write that cheesefest. Mariah's songwriting has been waning since e=mc2 and most of Memoirs is a mess (though as a longterm lamb, I try to attribute that to The-Dream's lame ass). The lyrics of Beautiful are the least memorable part of the entire song. Their voices & melody is what carry the song. Which really became a problem since she rehashed the same mess in each subsequent remix. I remember when she would rewrite songs or intergrate other songs into hers for a brand new mix. Like I said, she needs a new pen because the ink is dried out in her current one.

I don't think that Memoirs was necessarily bad. However, it is very different from her other albums because of how similar it is. You really have to be in a certain mood to listen to it. Either it really takes you or just flows by you imo.

I hate The-Dream and his heavy hand is all over Memoirs. He brought out the childlike nature that Mariah can possess which to me was an ill fit. To me, its her worst album from every angle: vocally, lyrically & musically. Who told her to record "I Want To Know What Love Is" when she isn't in the vocal shape to really flesh that song out? Why was Obsessed even created? Who approved Candy Bling? I mean so many missteps which should have been avoided.

The lyrics of Beautiful are the least memorable part of the entire song. Their voices & melody is what carry the song. I agree, but not in the sense that the lyric is bad. "#B" has some great/memorable lines; "You're beautiful, and I can't pretend that doesn't mean a thing to me" (love how unabashed that is) and "I like when you run red lights" immediately come to mind. I also like the specific visuals in parts like "let the moonlight kiss your skin." I do think Mariah has gotten a bit lazy with her writing, or maybe it's the urban (i.e. rhythmic) influence taking over. What I mean is, her melody writing on the whole is not as strong as it was in the 90s and early 00s. There are exceptions ("We Belong Together," "Love Story," and "HATEU" come to mind), but in general her song construction is not on the same level it used to be.

Why was Obsessed even created? Who approved Candy Bling? I mean so many missteps which should have been avoided. Not to mention that most of it doesn't sound like her. There are a few songs where her sound definitely comes through, but most of it sounds like a bunch of Dream demos with flowery Mimi lyrics penned last minute. The problem with "Beautiful" is that the hook (the most important part of a single) is lifeless. It's nothing. The verses are excellent, especially her verse. "Triumphant" is straight up trolling. Also, I do think she's had major writers block, hence the initial long delay before the incident. When Liron and I were on good terms, Liron told me it took Mariah three months to write and record "Triumphant" and its remixes...and the lambs thought she had an album ready.

From start to finish Memoirs is my favorite album of hers since Butterfly, the only song I don't like is placed at the very end so perfect I know when to stop and don't have to skip anything. She can leave those pop covers alone if she want to. The highs of TEOM are better than anything on Memoirs but there are flaws with that album that are overlooked due to the success. The strained screaming of Mine again, To The Floor is utterly useless, the filler at the end that sound so alike and the sameness of some the songs in production.

It took her three months to write and record "Triumphant" and the remixes? Yikes, that's not very productive. I'll admit that the Vintage Throwback Remix is really quite amazing, though.
It's not really the lyrics or vocals I'm worried about on the upcoming album- it's the production and melody. "#Beautiful's" production is great since it sounds like nothing Mariah has done, and it will hold up well over the years.

Who approved Candy Bling? I did! No, but I really enjoyed that song. I secretly wanted it and "Ribbon" to be singles. Her vocals were fine! The only misstep on Memoirs for me was "I Want To Know What Love Is". As an album, Memoirs is actually my favorite of hers since Butterfly.

The problem with "Beautiful" is that the hook (the most important part of a single) is lifeless. It's nothing. I completely disagree. I find the chorus pretty sexy and breeze, and "And I can't pretend that doesn't mean a thing to me, to me" gets stuck in my head all of the time.

The strained screaming of Mine again, To The Floor is utterly useless, the filler at the end that sound so alike and the sameness of some the songs in production. We can discuss TEOM if you like. She does do a lot of screaming on the album but its part of its charm for my tastes. I feel like its the last time we will ever hear her full range and power on record. I rather someone oversing than underuse their voice. I feel like she copied and pasted her whistle notes on most of the album. I also hate how she feeds into Jermaine Dupri's bulls**t on songs like "Get Your Number", a song that didn't need his stamp on it yet is ruined because of it. I hate how she left off the Diana Ross-like "When I Feel It" and the soul disco "Sprung" which are some of the dopest records she's made during the last decade. All of these complaints doesn't stop it from being her best album since Butterfly in most people's eyes. The "sameness in the production" on a few songs help the consistency and vibe of the album which is very 70's soul inspired. "I Wish You Knew" gives me a Luther Vandross in concert feel with the impeccable background sanging. I absolutely LOVE all of the arrangements and the lyrics, generally speaking overall, are really her best since the 90's. "To The Floor" is so forgettable that I only remember it as the Nelly duet.
"It's A Wrap" sounds like a b-side from this era which is probably why its my favorite on Memoirs.

I do appreciate "Standing O", I like the snarky sarcasm of it and Mariah male bashing like she's Beyonce is pure gold. Its rare to hear her cop a 'tude on record.

"It's A Wrap" sounds like a b-side from this era which is probably why its my favorite on Memoirs. I think TEOM is a natural progression from Emotions because both were inspired by older R&B, with TEOM being more current. "Circles" reminds me of a Gladys Knight song, "I Wish You Knew" is Luther/Diana, "Your Girls" reminds me of the Jackson 5, "Stay The Night" has that great Stylistics sample, "We Belong Together" has a classic feel to it and even name checks Bobby Womack, and even "Joy Ride" and "Fly Like A Bird" have old-school elements. Had "I Feel It" replaced "To The Floor" (as I do on my iPod) it would have all been even more obvious. On top of that both "Get Your Number" and "Say Somethin'" recall the 80s a bit, as does "Secret Love." Throw that one in the mix and you get 70s and 80s. Re: MOAIA, I live for the those ad-libs at the end of "Candy Bling." Err day. Standouts on the album for me are "HATEU," "Candy Bling," "Ribbon," "It's A Wrap," and "The Impossible." I like the first half of "Betcha Gon Know" a lot, but it sort of falls apart.

I didn't even use the ballads for MOAIA. The Dream had some hot songs on there for sure. "Candy Bling" was everything, next to "More Than Just Friends". THAT was the song of the album.

"More Than Just Friends" is horrible; it has no hook, no melody and some of the worst lyrics on a Mariah song ever (I also blame The Dream for dumbing down her lyrics). The song is a waste of 3 and a half minutes.
ETA - No, MTJF is not horrible actually, it's something worse: much like its parent album (at least on first listen), it's uneventful.

I agree about the "#Beautiful" chorus; it got stuck in my head, too, when it was out. I don;'t know if Mimi will release as pop-friendly a track with her next single, but that one fit the bill well enough.
Maybe I should revisit Memoirs- at the time of its release, nothing I heard inspired me to get it- like the 1999-2002 albums. Though, in retrospect, I enjoy more Glitter tracks than I do Rainbow or Charmbracelet.

Though, in retrospect, I enjoy more Glitter tracks than I do Rainbow or Charmbracelet. Eh. It's pretty mid-tempo throughout, so it's definitely a "mood album." At least re-visit the end of "Candy Bling" because those ad-libs are fire. "HATEU" is a classic, but you've already said it's too slow for you. Apart from that I don't see you suddenly liking anything. "Obsessed" was Dr Dre-like fun and has some good lines (I still use "You a mom and pop/I'm a corporation"), but it doesn't come close to her best lead singles. "The Impossible" belongs on an iPod playlist with Janet's killer "Any Time, Any Place," but not everyone is a fan of that style of record.

Mariah is the #1 trending topic on Yahoo! right now.
Also, apparently that latest tweet with the pic is her most retweeted ever. :o
She needs to take advantage of this hype and announce something!

I did kinda like "Obsessed," though, but, yeah, some of the slower tracks, couldn't get much into. Drrams- hype around a selfie?
