GRETCHEN WILSON Album Title: Here for the Party Producer(s): Mark Wright, Joe Scaife Genre: COUNTRY Label/Catalog Number: Epic 90903 Release Date: May 11 Source: Billboard Magazine Originally Reviewed: May 22, 2004
This may be Gretchen Wilson's debut CD, but this girl is no rookie. Unapologetically unrefined, Wilson's slightly trashy party-girl persona is refreshing on rowdy fare like the smash lead-off single "Redneck Woman" and the exquisite barroom shuffle "When It Rains." Even if she's tremendous as a high-steppin' "Bocephusette," Wilson is also a stone country torch singer on such sterling cuts as "When I Think About Cheatin' " and the edgy romance of "Holdin' You." A credible songwriter in her own right, Wilson also demonstrates a keen ear for material by other writers. She is simply hellacious on the Leslie Satcher/John Caldwell Trans-Am rave-up "Chariot." Later, "The Bed" (featuring Big & Rich) would do George Jones proud. Wilson wraps things up in Waylon-esque fashion with the thumpin' bio "Pocahontas Proud." Wilson isn't just here for the party—she is the party.—RW
Detroit Free Press:
Anti-diva Gretchen Wilson is full of surprises
May 14, 2004 BY GREG CRAWFORD FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER
Look out, Shania! Move over, Martina!
There's a new woman in Nashville, and she's singing about things country music hasn't addressed in years. Things like fighting and cheating, drinking beer, getting rowdy and, heck, shopping for clothes at Wal-Mart.
Gretchen Wilson's red-hot single "Redneck Woman" showed up on the charts a mere nine weeks ago and quickly began shaking up the female side of country. The bawdy hit, which opens with the lines "Well I ain't never been the Barbie doll type/ No I can't swig that sweet champagne, I'd rather drink beer all night," has moved into the top five on Billboard's country singles chart, and it's heading for No. 1 at a breakneck pace.
It's also turning heads and upsetting apple carts all over Nashville's Music Row, which for the better part of a decade has been running a "Stepford Wives"-like diva mill that has produced a seemingly endless string of high-glamour singers who sing high-drama pop ballads.
A listen to Wilson's debut album, "Here for the Party," which arrived in stores Tuesday, proves that "Redneck Woman" is no fluke.
The album and anti-diva Wilson, 30, will surprise you over and over, starting with the barroom brawler "Homewrecker," which draws its inspiration from the Loretta Lynn school of lyric writing ("You little go-getter/ I'll teach you a lesson/ If you go to messin' with my man/ You don't stand a chance"). Other must-hears:
The lovely retro ballads "When I Think About Cheatin' " and "The Bed." Both would have been perfectly at home in the hands of Patsy Cline or Tammy Wynette.
"Chariot," the album's edgiest moment. The wild mix of country, gospel and hip-hop finds Wilson facing Redneck Judgment Day and delivering lines like: "Boys, I'm gonna get me a chariot/ Yeah a gold-eagle-on-the-hood Trans Am chariot." "Here for the Party" is one heck of a fine debut. Wilson boldly confronts topics and demons Nashville has been trying to sweep under the carpet for years, and she makes them sound fresh and relevant again.
In the words of the singer: "Hell yeah" and "Yee haw."

A real tough gal shakes up country music

GRETCHEN WILSON

Country has been a boy's club with solo women shut out of the top spot on Billboard's Country Tracks chart for more than two years.
What the polished Shania, Reba and Sara Evans couldn't do, a tough woman from a trailer park in the small town of Pocahontas, Ill., just may.
Gretchen Wilson's rowdy Redneck Woman is leaping up the singles chart like a bronco with a shard of glass in its hoof. The opening lyric, ''Well I ain't never been the Barbie doll type,'' sums up who she is: a high-school dropout who was working in taverns at 15; a single mom of 30 who seems to be connecting with the masses because unlike robo beauty queens like Shania Twain, Martina McBride and Faith Hill, Wilson sounds like she's actually lived rather than been manufactured in some Music Row factory.
Wilson may be speaking to real people when she sings, ''I'm a redneck woman / I ain't no high class broad / I'm just a product of my raising / I say hey y'all and yee haw / And I keep my Christmas lights on / On my front porch all year long,'' but she's also playing to old stereotypes.
Better yet, Pocahontas Proud, a track tracing Wilson's struggles in narrow-minded Nashville. 'I knocked on every door on Music Row / But they looked down at me and said `Girl go back home' / You ain't got what we need in this town,'' she sings with authority.
Wilson is best for what she represents -- a move away from the sugary pap of McBride, et al. -- and her voice and music carry a distinct Dixie Chicks flavor. With country radio at a banal low point, we'll take that kick.

Finally the female-less streak is broken after more than 2 years.
There are countless other songs that should have gone to #1 in that time, but congrats to Gretchen Wilson on finally breaking through.

These viewers are going overboard about Faith and Shania. They can't help it that they live amazing lives and are the two most beautiful woman in country music.
I like Gretchen, but she'll never be Faith or Shania because she has absolutely no crossover appeal. Comparing those ladies is like apples and oranges, and I know that the reviewers would go there.

The last solo female #1 was back around this time in '02 with Martina's "Blessed." But last year we had the Dixie Chicks with "Travelin' Soldier." Just not solo...

Also, who was the last solo Country female to have a Number 1 album on the Billboard 200? Has it been done since "Up!"? Gretchen is trying to do that also.

Gretchen Wilson Scores #1 Hat Trick Wednesday May 19, 8:01 pm ET "Here For The Party" Album & "Redneck Woman" Single, Video Top Charts
NASHVILLE, Tenn., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Singer/Songwriter Gretchen Wilson entered into the history books this week, as her first single "Redneck Woman," her debut album "Here For The Party" and "Redneck Woman" music video all hit the top of their respective charts. In addition, she set the record for being the first act to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard's Country Music Chart and #2 on the trade magazine's Top 200 Chart with over 226,900 units sold in the first week.
"When I took this job I said that it was my job to enable artists to create," said Sony Nashville president John Grady. I also said that I was going to follow these artists wherever they were going to lead us. I plan on following Gretchen Wilson anywhere she wants to go."
Released just 12 weeks ago, the anthem "Redneck Woman" single immediately struck a chord with listeners, and it became the fastest song to reach #1 on the country chart in the history of music trade Radio & Records. In addition, the song debuted as the #1 download on walmart.com, and it remained in the top spot for four consecutive weeks.
The corresponding music video, which featured performance footage and cameos by her buds Hank Williams, Jr., Kid Rock, Tanya Tucker, Big & Rich and James Otto, hit #1 on CMT's Top 20 this week. The clip has been a top request for both CMT and GAC.
Features and big-hitting reviews have already hit in Entertainment Weekly (two-page spread), The Village Voice ("a tsunami of Southern female pride that somehow manages to combine the research of Jeff Foxworthy and Carol Gilligan"), a cover feature in The Nashville Scene, USA Today ("country proud anthem "Redneck Woman" just might make her the biggest thing to hit Nashville this year"), St Louis Post-Dispatch and more. The New York Times will feature her on May 30, and Rolling Stone will feature Gretchen in their "New Faces" section in the June 4 issue.

Is it better than Kylie Minogue's "Red Blooded Woman"?

Is it better than Kylie Minogue's "Red Blooded Woman"? Nope! I heard "RBW" on KIIS today when I was getting a haircut! :) I am still not feeling "Redneck Woman." I heard it on KZLA today. I would rather listen to Mindy McCready's more-friendly female empowerment hit "Guys Do It All The Time" than this.

The album has now passed 500k in sales (with this weeks numbers from Hits, so far)
Chart run:
BB200:
02 - 04 - 04
Country Albums:
01 - 01 - 01
And "Redneck Woman" will spend its 4th week atop of the Country singles chart, as it is still gaining over 150 spins on Country radio.

I'm not sure if you misquoted or if R&R wasn't thinking. There have been tons of songs that went to #1 in less time. Just recently, Darryl Singletary, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson...this list can go on. I'm not sure what they meant. Achy Breaky Heart set the record for a DEBUT single, with 9 weeks according to BB. Shania hit in 6 weeks to become the fastest woman. I think she realistically could go 5, possibly 6 weeks at #1. I don't like the new Toby song, and I think that has the best chance of getting to #1 before Tim does. Mike

It broke the record for a debut single. But accuracy is not so important in these articles. Most of them about any artist are full of wrong facts. I find it a very annoying feature.

I don't think I've ever visited this forum, but something about this song really bugs me, so here I am.
"I don't need no designer tag to make my man want me" (you can pretty much include the whole verse that this is in; I don't remember it all, though.)
And then you look inside the CD cover at the pictures that were included, and what's she wearing? They all look like designer clothes to me!

LOL. Well it's all about female empowerment any way, she didn't say she doesn't wear designer clothes, she just says they aren't necessary for her man to want her.
