I have to disagree with Abel here, it’s not like he invented R‘n‘B songs with falsetto over an electronic production. But you can’t dismiss his influence and impact on the genre as a whole.

I’m so confused? Diplo said the track itself was inspired by House of Balloons. Nobody is taking away the work Usher did for the genre in the early 2000s, Abel just thought it was cool that such an important figure in music was sharing a trend that he helped popularise. Why is this news, honestly?

Some of The Weeknd's fans are trying to do just that, though. FWIW I think a number of Usher/older r&b fans feel like the young'uns have been trying it to capacity lately, saying crazy stuff like Trey or Chris have better discographies than Usher does. Abel just kind of stumbled into pissing off a crowd that was already wound up and ready to fight. IDK if this is how he meant it to come off, but his statement had an air of arrogance and basically read like him trying to 'son' someone who came before him.

And Diplo just said that, I think? I don't recall him ever mentioning HOB/Climax until now (there is an old RS article from 2012 or so that claimed it, but I don't think anyone paid that any mind back then). Personally I don't hear how Climax sounds Weeknd-influenced even in the production...a drum machine and some falsetto do not an influence make. Weeknd has a really hazy, moderately-drugged-out atmospheric vibe that I don't get from Climax.

But both Ariel Rechtshaid (the co-producer) and Elijah Blake (the main writer) said no outside influences inspired the production. It's just funny how he's ignoring both people when they responded to his tweet, but that's just Diplo's MO. He either speaks out for *shudders* clout or just some basic attention.

Even though Hard to love's album sales are weak worldwide unfortunately, his comprehensive album streaming for that album is actually pretty good and higher than his pure sales. This data is from 3 years ago, so all his audio streams, Spotify streams, etc are obviously way higher currently (and will keep increasing) for all his discography, songs, etc. Confessions is obviously streamed the most, next up is Raymond vs. Raymond.
