Wynonna and Heart Draw Biggest EVER CMT Crossroads Crowd and Put on a Mighty Rock Show
Wynonna and Heart (sisters Ann & Nancy Wilson) drew the biggest crowd yet for a CMT Crossroads taping in Nashville last Thursday night, and for good reason – anyone who’s heard any of these women in concert before knew that combining those powerhouse vocalists was going to be something special.
Wynonna, who opened with “Girls with Guitars,” told the crowd, “Two years ago I had a dream that I was the third Wilson – dreams come true my friend.” Later in the show Ann asked Wy if that made her and her sister Nancy the fourth and fifth Judds. Wy playfully told them they could be cousins.
The first standing ovation of the night came from a joint stellar performance on “It’s Only Love.” Wy smiled at the response – “This is only the appetizer, honey.”
The cover of Foreigner’s “I Want To Know Want Love Is” (that’s on Wy’s current CD What The World Needs Now Is Love) drew the audience to their feet in mid song, and by the time Heart’s band came out to dive into their songs, it was just too rockin’ to sit down. When the girls finished wailing on “Magic Man,” Wy quipped, “Take that, Nashville.”
She then got to fulfill a dream and perform “Dog & Butterfly” with Heart. Afterwards, Ann asked Wy, “Did you ever have that nightmare where you walk out on stage and you don’t have any clothes on?” Wynonna blurted out, “That would ruin my career!”
Wy’s favorite performance highlights included a cover of Nazareth’s “Love Hurts,” followed by a song she introduced by warning, “It’s time to have a little church – the church of rock ‘n’ roll” – and they all jammed with Alice in Chains guitarist, Jerry Cantrell to the Led Zeppelin cover “Rock ‘n’ Roll,” which featured some major flipping of hair!
The Q&A session drew a lively response when 80’s disco diva Donna Summer asked, “What’s it like to be a woman in rock and roll today?” Wy and Heart discussed how there is pressure for women to be “pole dancers” now, and that what’s missing in music today is poetry and heart. When asked about motherhood, Wy told the story that one night she got off stage with sparkles flying though her hair, only to go on the bus and hear her son Elijah yell from the back, “Mom, wipe my butt.”
After the show Wy summed it up best when telling her favorite dog about her big night -- performing with Heart was one of her top five favorite life moments.
Look for the Wynonna & Heart CMT Crossroads to air July 9 at 9 PM, ET.
