King Luke is breaking records left and right. Highest spin total (7078), SPSPW (50.6), and audience total (45.5 mil) in the history of country radio!!!!!! :o
Shame on CMAs if CMP does not win Record of the Year!! And what's amazing is that there are even better songs on the CMP album. Just wait until the uptempo summer jam "That's My Kind of Night" is released. Any idea of the adds date? Perhaps it's good marketing if they release it to radio on the week of album release (8/13) - and it gets played every hour on Clear Channel to promote the album.

At the risk of sounding like a dweeb, what does SPSPW mean?

Not sure that "That's My Kind of Night" has been confirmed as the next single. But I imagine for whatever the second single is it'll be around there somewhere, not that it really matters if they release it around the album release date or not - his album is going to sell crazy numbers.

Shame on CMAs if CMP does not win Record of the Year!! Well first they'd have to make a category with that name for that to even be possible. Single of the Year isn't solely based on breaking records and being a big hit though. It's based on the quality of the song as well. Sure this has broken radio records, sold well, and gotten 3 weeks at #1, but its nowhere near the best song in country music within the past year. Its success may be good enough to get it a nomination, and maybe even a win, but there are plenty of other very successful songs that arguably are much better songs than "Crash My Party" that also would be deserving winners of the Single of the Year award.

50.617 SPSPW for this tune, breaking the record he set with a previous single of his; I'm not sure which one, but I'm sure someone else can identify that tune. Wow, thanks Marv, I guess we've broken into the 50 territory now... I think Luke had 48 SPSPW with "Drunk On You". At the risk of sounding like a dweeb, what does SPSPW mean? "Spins Per Station Per Week" :)

King Luke is breaking records left and right. Highest spin total (7078), SPSPW (50.6), and audience total (45.5 mil) in the history of country radio!!!!!! :o The airplay marks have less to do with Luke Bryan than they do a change in approach to spin allocation by an increasing number of country radio stations. If you haven't noticed (and since you put so much weight on these numbers for Luke, it seems that you haven't), the past few months have seen consecutive record-breakers in Billboard audience and spin totals on Mediabase. That is because an increasing number of country radio stations have taken to giving their top song as many as sixty to seventy spins per week, compared to the forty to forty-five that used to be considered the upper limit. This is, perhaps, in no small part due to the influx of pop programmers used to giving north of one hundred spins per week to their top song, who believe that stations should place more emphasis on their most popular songs relative to the less familiar ones. So the airplay marks that you're seeing aren't really a testament to how big a hit "Crash My Party" is -- as country radio continues to evolve, you can expect "Crash My Party's" mark to fall pretty quickly, and it won't necessarily be because the next record breaker is that much more popular or resonant a song. In this transition period, the new marks for spins per station per week don't reflect the same level of format popularity that the SPSPW numbers did for songs like "Live Like You Were Dying" or "Jesus, Take the Wheel." I actually think that, in some ways, "Crash My Party" has underperformed, and not surprisingly because it is so bland and relatively weak in hooks for a Luke Bryan song. Someone with Luke's level of popularity (and I see him as the genre's top music seller) should have a lead single that really explodes, but in the time that it has been out, "Crash My Party" has been outperformed by "Wagon Wheel" and the awful "Boys Round Here," with "I Want Crazy" threatening to outsell it in the course of the next month, as well. I think "Crash My Party"'s chart run has had more to do with Luke's popularity and the fact that he is in the process of becoming the format's strongest commercial presence than the song itself, and expect to see it overshadowed before long. If "That's My Kind Of Night" is Luke's next single, then I agree that it will be a hit on a level that "Crash My Party" hasn't been. That is unfortunate considering that, much like "Boys Round Here," the lyrics read like what any of us might come up with if we were writing a parody of a 2013 country hit, replete with formulaic beer, truck, and pretty girl mentions, and the usual empty name-dropping of a country legend. The formula is a Peach Picker and now, Big Loud Shirt, signature, and has overtaken singles from country radio's males to the point of suffocating the life and any sense of originality out of the format. But the melody combines the rock and rhythmic elements and multiple catchy hooks that drove Luke's biggest hits from Tailgates & Tanlines, so I expect the song to do extremely well for him. It would be nice to see Luke succeed with a substantive, well-written song, because if and when that happens, it will be a first for him as far as I am concerned.

I'll second that round of applause for our esteemed moderator; those staggering SPSPW numbers for both 'Live Like You Were Dying' (47.94 in August of 2004 and the former record holder) and 'Jesus, Take The Wheel' (43.64 in January of 2006 and far and away the best such numbers ever for a debut single) would certainly both qualify as 'blow-your-doors-off' numbers, which would definitely not be the case for the numbers for 'Crash My Party' for the reasons that 43dudleyvillas alluded to so well.
Back then, such SPSPW numbers would have really constituted a really big deal, and the same goes for the songs which ranked second through fifth in the SPSPW category when 'Jesus, Take The Wheel' dominated the charts during their respective chart runs, and I posted these stats the first time around.
Live Like You Were Dying---47.94
As Good As I Once Was (43.88 in August of 2005)
I Go Back (43.71 in August of 2004, but never reached #1 thanks to Tim)
Jesus, Take The Wheel---43.64
There Goes My Life (43.40 in January of 2004)

I don't really follow country music anymore but I do know who the big stars are. Where did this guy come from? He seems to be huge right now and I for the life of me can't figure out why. He isn't that cute (let's face it looks do help in this business) and I've checked out some live concert clips on youtube this week and as far as I can tell he really isn't a very strong singer. So has he gotten big by shaking his butt at his shows (I refer you to the videos I've watched this week) and singing party anthems? I'm seriously interested. I can see someone like Jason Aldean hitting it big because I think he has some talent but this guy....
Good for Luke for his success but how did it happen? Any thoughts? Does he write?

Well, believe it or not, Luke's a pretty strong vocalist in his own right. However, the material he's been presenting as of the tailgates and tanlines era does cater to the frat-boy country crowd and is not that appealing to me, album-wise. I will admit to liking a good handful of it, but I'm not naive enough to jam to CG whenever it comes on. I happen to think both Aldean and Bryan have a great amount of talent; imo, Luke may be the better vocalist, but Aldean has a better album catalog. I'm pretty sure he writes his own material; the only single he hasn't co written was last year's summer hit "Drunk on You" and this one. Oh, and btw, if "That's My Kind of Night" is indeed the next single, I just might have to send myself to rehab after hearing a rough live snippet of it earlier in the week. I can only think of one word to describe it atm: yikes!

Well, to each their own, but I think Luke Bryan can sing the incredibly subpar Jason Aldean under the table any day of the week and looks-wise, well... Luke has him beat there quite easily, too imo. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the direction of many of Luke Bryan's songs, though I find him to be one of the stronger male vocalists on radio today and feel like he's a generally likable personality, so his launch into super-stardom doesn't confuse me in the slightest.

Thanks for the input. I do disagree about this guy being able to sing live but that's all very subjective.

So has he gotten big by shaking his butt at his shows (I refer you to the videos I've watched this week) and singing party anthems? Pretty much. Tons of girls are crazy about Luke... they're obsessed with his looks, and love his "aw shucks" laid-back attitude. He does write a good amount of his material, and has a decent voice, but I'm just not a fan of all the frat-party songs. One of his only singles that I thoroughly enjoyed was "We Rode In Trucks". That's a really great song.

I can see Capitol "copy-catting" Warner's strategy for releasing "Boys 'Round Here" by releasing "My Kinda Night" on August 13 and arranging a Clear Channel World Premiere. That's really the best strategy when a lead single zooms up the charts so quickly it peaks and falls off the chart before the album is ready. It's always good to have a song being played a lot on the radio around the time the album is first released for obvious reasons. If only Brad Paisley and TBP would have used this strategy with "Beat This Summer" and "Done."

Well, the Clear Channel deal hasn't exactly provided favorable results in many cases. I don't think Luke's team needs a 2nd single to be high on the chart before the album release...everyone knows his album is coming out, and it's only a couple of weeks out now. "Crash My Party" will still be getting plenty of recurrent airplay for many weeks yet, and, well, this IS Luke Bryan. I really wouldn't be surprised if he pulls out a 400k+ opening but if not I'm sure he'll do at least 300k.

The alternative and safer strategy would be to release it later in the week as superstars such as Paisley, Chesney & Underwood have done which would eliminate the dreaded second week crash; such a strategy didn't stop any of their respective singles from reaching the penthouse.

iTunes Canada has the new album with 90 second previews of all songs!! Now I know why Luke said he could release 6-7 singles off this album! :o
All these songs are worthy of radio releases....hopefully in this order:
2. That's My Kind of Night - Catchy uptempo for those that like Country Girl or I Don't Want This Night To End 3. I See You - Favorite song based on the 90 second previews. The quintessential Luke Bryan mid-tempo. Surprised it's listed as Track #7 (hope it gets a radio release if full song is good). 4. Drink A Beer - Favorite traditional country sounding song. Good songwriting by Chris Stapleton. Could be the "Over You" of 2014. 5. Beer In The Headlights - Favorite uptempo song on the album. Co-written by Cole Swindell. Obvious choice for radio release in summer of 2014. Huge smash! 6. Dirt Road Diary - Fan favorite ballad for those who went to the DRD tour. Great way to end the era.
Although "Roller Coaster" (which has a "Someone Else Calling You Baby" vibe) and "Play It Again" (catchy mid-tempo) are also very worthy choices. I guess Luke should have said he has 8 songs to pick from as radio singles. :) It's kinda shocking that "Crash My Party" is the first single....there are at least 5-6 songs that are better than CMP.

I will say it here: Luke Bryan's success with Crash My Party will be enough to end Blake Shelton's reign this year at the C.M.A.s for Male Vocalist.

The first three tracks are utterly terrible, especially the song that is about to become the follow-up. That one is even worse than I remember. "Roller Coaster" is pretty bland and mediocre. Still seems worse than average on the first preview. "We Run This Town" is safer than safe. No attempt at making a unique song. "Drink a Beer" does not seem to be as good or deep as it is trying to be though it is decent. Deserves to be a single. Does not deserve to be within 10 miles or song of the year nominations (though it very well may be. ACM's 2015?).
Among the 2nd half of the album, "Blood Brothers" sort of intrigues me enough to listen to the full song eventually, but I really don't like the production much at all. I don't think that was one of the potential singles that Luke was talking about, but who knows. That one needs a full listen for sure. "Goodbye Girl" is another mediocre song, and sadly it is one of the best songs on the album. I'd probably rank it 3rd or 4th at the very least. At least he saves best for last with "Dirt Road Diary". If that is not a single, I will have given up on Luke. The rest of the 2nd half of the album are the worst songs on the album bar the first track, which I still cannot believe. I didn't think it got worse than tailgates & tanlines, but apparently it does. And I am someone who loved CG(SIFM), I just hated most of the non-singles with like 3 exceptions.
If the CMA MVotY is between Blake and Luke, I'll be pulling for Blake, but if you look at the trend, the last nine years have consisted of 3 three-peats, and Toby Keith prevented Alan Jackson from making that 4 three-peats in 12 years. Blake has probably had a bigger year than Luke. BRH was just as big as CMP if not bigger, and SBCIYD was bigger than KTG. "Over" was also peaking in the time frame as a small hit. Blake also released an album within the eligibility period. Still, it appeared at the ACMs that Luke Bryan was ready to become the new frontrunner at awards shows. Despite a fairly insignificant year on the airwaves, Aldean may be able to squeak out Entertainer for some of the big stadium shows effectively shutting out Blake from the major awards though he may still be up Single of the Year and MEotY (somehow BRH is a collaboration...).

Although 90 second previews don't tell everything, you get a good idea of where this album is going. Luke Bryan is clearly following the "If it ain't broke" philosophy for his Crash My Party. That's My Kind of Night is atrocious in it's lyrics and overproduction; there's still probably no chance it DOESN'T go number one, but I can dream. Beer In The Headlights is just this album's I Don't Want This Night To End; pretty mediocre, but will still probably be a big hit. Roller Coaster is completely bland and forgettable. I See You is the same boring song we've heard from Bryan time and time again, but it's a song radio will love. We Run This Town, Drink A Beer, Blood Brothers, and Dirt Road Diary are the songs I'm interesting in listening to, but they don't sound like anything new or groundbreaking. The rest of the songs are not even worth mentioning due to their clichés and familiarity.
My predictions for the singles are 1. Crash My Party 2. That's My Kind of Night 3. Beer In The Headlights 4. Drink A Beer 5. I See You

Despite less time at #1, "Boys 'Round Here" was a MUCH bigger hit than "Crash My Party" was. CMP is a big hit, no doubt, but BRH was out-selling it on a weekly basis for the entire time. There was just more of an incentive for a longer stay at #1 for CMP, given that it's Luke's lead single and the album release is still a few weeks away. It also had a bit better timing. Neither song is very good though.
As for award shows, I think Blake will still have plenty of the spotlight. What I don't see is Aldean taking any. "1994" didn't make a very big impact at all and while he is playing all these huge stops on tour, that's not really all that new. The voters seem to ignore that, or else they would've made Chesney or McGraw the EOTY for their stadium run last year. Aldean's been playing huge stops for a while but the difference now is that the entire Night Train album hasn't made nearly the impact that My Kinda Party did. I actually think Jason was pretty lucky to sneak out the MVOTY at the ACM's earlier this year. I think that required a lot of work by BBR and I think the industry felt that they had to recognize him somewhere. But Aldean doesn't have the big label behind him like Luke and Blake do, and also, both Blake and Luke are still on an upward momentum swing whereas MKP was Aldean's high-point (so far, at least). Blake's new album and the singles too are easily out-pacing his last 'era' in sales, he's had back-to-back winners on the Voice that have gone country, and he's got a big tour. No, it's not as big as Luke's or Jason's, but it's still big. Luke is also gonna explode in sales here, regardless of the quality of his album. He's had nothing but big hits at radio and big digital sellers and his Spring Break album from earlier this year has outsold many studio projects from other big names.
I don't feel like getting specific but I'm sure Male Vocalist is either gonna be Blake or Luke, and one of them will be Entertainer as well unless Taylor takes that one. I don't think either of them will get Single or Song trophies though. I could see both of them getting nominated in the Single category but I don't really think they'll win there. I wouldn't be surprised to see Single go to "Cruise" and Song to something like "Wagon Wheel". "Crash My Party" and "Sure Be Cool If You Did" and "Boys 'Round Here" don't exactly strike fear in my heart when I think about their chances of winning (or even getting nominated in) the Song of the Year category, but I could see a couple of those songs getting into the Single category.

^Maybe BRH only outsold CMP because it was rap. Cruise and BRH are both now rap songs and they were #1 and #2 sellers on a week to week basis. Just might show where we're heading as a genre.

"Cruise" isn't being purchased by country fans though. It's sold, what, 5 million+ now? And most big hit songs might sell 1-2 million. There's no way "Cruise" is 5 times more popular than other big country hits. The same thing can be said about "Need You Now". Songs like that have transcended way beyond the genre lines. The genre of country music itself is still strong but it's country radio that is getting overrun with too many other sounds. I really think that a growing percentage of consumers that are buying country songs/albums now are fans of the current trends but couldn't tell you anything about George, Alan, Reba, etc. So what I wonder is, at what point does today's 'country' music become a totally separate genre? All these songs are popular at radio nowadays but that's because radio keeps playing to this more contemporary group that grew up on rock music or AC stuff. Nashville keeps producing music like that, but I think there is a HUGE group of people out there who are actually fans of genuine country music...they just don't listen to the radio anymore.

And that was kinda the point I was making that certain songs are promoted far too much to certain genre and therefore we have a false report on how big a hit they actually are, "Cruise" being the prime example.

Leave it to the idiots at Billboard to declare 'Cruise' to be 'the country song of the summer' in their current issue, which must be a hell of a shock to the rest of us, let alone Luke Bryan.
