I really enjoyed Double Dutchess. It wasn't some magnum opus of artistry, but it was a solid album IMO. I am interested to hear more from Fergie.

The album that never ends... I mean 'THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT: THE ANTHOLOGY' out now!

I agree that she would have received more success if she released sooner. The songs on Double Dutchess, while maybe not the most critically acclaimed, are classic Fergie. Considering the success of her first album, I'm surprised her label didn't try to make her release another one a lot sooner.

I'm convinced that the only way Fergie, Gwen and Nelly Furtado can get a #1 single again is if they release a song together. I'm still hopelessly dreaming that can happen soon (although it won't).

Yeah -- and honestly, apart from them actually being innovative and having songs that were eaten up by radio, I think the fact that she was such a solo success translated into an even bigger interest in BEP. But their touring ended around 2012. She released L.A. Love in 2014, which peaked at 27 on the Hot 100. I think Interscope expected a Top 10 so they went back to the drawing board. Had she continued releasing songs I think they would've been moderately successful, but she didn't release a solo album until 2017 and I think people just lost interest. MILF $ also went viral in 2016 pretty quickly, and Interscope was not able to capitalize on that and ended up removing the adds date for the song. I don't think this was ever discussed by Fergie, but I assumed this is what caused her to leave Interscope, go to BMG and make her own imprint under Dutchess Music (causing an even longer delay on the album being released). As far I remember the album was ready when MILF $ was released. The MPG's from 2006 - Nelly, Gwen and Fergie - have all had a hard time. All took what felt like forever forever to follow up with their mainstream solo albums, and the GP (and the sound of pop music) had just moved on by the time they resurfaced. The problem with Double Dutchess is that it sounds a lot like leftovers from 2014, rather than a reinvention. MILF $ was never going to be a radio hit - it's barely listenable outside of the video. Gwen didn’t? Isn’t The Sweet Escape her biggest hit? Nelly Furtado had a nervous breakdown after Loose because she wasn’t cut out for the machine. She almost “bowed” out I’d say. Only one who took forever was Fergie. This record should have dropped in 2012.

Her chart history is so sad. I don't know what the deal is with her, I'm guessing she has been battling some personal demons, but the fact that the first Dutchess did so well and they couldn't even get a follow-up top ten hit is a disaster.
And she completely faded away after than Anthem mess.

And she completely faded away after than Anthem mess. I'm not sure it is really that unexpected. She went on to do two #1 albums with BEP -- and she was a big part in them getting their first Hot 100 #1 (after she had 3 on her own). She had over a decade in between her debut and her sophomore album. There were clearly big fuck ups in the release of Double Dutchess (waiting 2 years after L.A. Love to release Milf $, then butchering the roll out of the album for a year after the Milf $ video going viral), but the timeframe of it all wasn't helpful to her. solo career. I see it as if Double Dutchess was her fourth era (considering The Dutchess as the 1st). And she also turned 40 back in the mid 2010s. All her three singles from Double Dutchess going Top 40 on Pop radio was actually a surprise to me. You bring an interesting point about her fading away. She may very well be battling some demons, but if that's the case... then I'm glad she's working on them instead of letting the media amplify that.

Yeah, it's not surprising she didn't get a hit off her 2nd solo effort. Had it not delivered a hit being released a year or two after her first, that would be sad. The decade gap really fudged things up in that respect, not to mention the rollout. Double Dutchess is still a quality album, though I found "Milf" atrocious. lol
I don't know why these artists think they can take a decade off and then have success. The general public are not going to stay interested after a several year gap as has been evidenced by artists like Fergie, Shania, Faith, The Dixie Chicks etc (and I love all these artists). A big break will more time than not kill your career commercially speaking.

I'm not sure Fergie is even working on any new music, but if she does not capitalize on Jack Harlow's sample of Glamorous -- even to just resurge the original song itself, hop on a remix, or release something it will be a huge opportunity wasted!!

Crazy what a sample can do. The Dutchess just cracked Apple Music's Top 200 albums.

Another #1 hit for Fergie (and Ludacris), since she co-wrote the original.

This seems random af. The decision to not include Milf is also weird.

Given that the recent Jack Harlow song sampled "Glamorous", it feels less random. But yeah, it is still random.

I remember detesting Fergie, and thought she ruined the BEPs because I loved their prior sound and the features they had (Esthero) but then she released her solo record, and I bought it instantly after hearing it online. What a stellar record, and I vividly remember her being the it music star of that time.

For someone that toiled around the entertainment industry for well over a decade before fully making it, it was bizarre to see her just drop her solo career. She really should have released her second solo album right after The END, it was the perfect setup. And Double Duchess was just too little, too late.
I have a ridiculous fondness for her and she clearly doesn't need the work, but it's still a shame she gave up those opportunities. I don't think she was an artist that would have stood the test of time, but she had at least another big era in her.

Fergie has such a similar trajectory with Gwen Stefani. Both rose to fame as the face of a band, enjoyed a super successful solo debut era (Gwen had a second era but we all know those materials were leftovers from LAMB), rejoined their band, then came back many years later without much success.

I see the similarity, but I guess the difference is Gwen rejoined her band and had a very lackluster era with Push and Shove so by that point a solo return was already a challenge. Now Fergie, she had a huge solo era than rejoined her band and they had an even bigger era. She was huge. It was the perfect moment for a second album that could have been even bigger than the first.

I agree their solo careers have a lot of parallels, and I also do consider them similar just because they came from a group, released their solos around the same time, and had huge debut solo albums that bested their groups.
Obviously every artist that releases something wants the project to have success, but I don't know if Fergie necessarily yearned for massive success when she spent 2006 - 2011 constantly touring, and playing some of the biggest stadiums in the world. As a fan, I do wish she were working on music and giving us a new album just because she can. She's still signed to BMG, so I'm sure she has a contract for another album. Who knows if that'll ever happen, though.

At least Jack Harlow paid tribute to her and the OG hit record. The sample is literally the best part of "First Class".
