What do you all make of this? Her single is still at 56. I like it a lot, so it's no shock that country radio didn't!
from chely.com: Chely Leaves Vivaton Posted on Thursday, June 24 2004 In a joint statement, Jeff Huskins, President/CEO, Vivaton Records and recording artist Chely Wright have announced today with regret that due to creative differences, Chely Wright will be departing the label. Ms. Wright will no longer be associated with nor represented by the record company.
from cmt.com: Chely Wright Exits Vivaton Records Thu. June 24.2004 7:07 PM EDT Chely Wright and Vivaton Records have parted company just five months after announcing that she had joined the independent label's artist roster. In a joint statement released Thursday (June 24), Wright and Vivaton president and CEO Jeff Huskins attributed the split to "creative differences." Huskins is a former member of Little Texas. Wright's "In the Back of the Bottom Drawer" was the label's first single. An album had originally been set for release in August. While recording for MCA Nashville, Wright reached No. 1 in 1999 with "Single White Female."

Shocker. I'm not suprised though, her main statement of intent when signing with the company was about wanting to be heard on the radio. "Back Of The Bottom Drawer" certainly didn't do that for her.
Not sure what she'll do now. She's been with majors and independents. The writing looks like it might be on the wall for her.

From herself on her forum:
Dear Team Chely,
I'm so sorry that Chuck and I were not able to answer more questions or fill you in during the past month. Legally, I was obligated not to address this publicly until now. I have been reading the message board every night and reading your posts. You all have been banging your heads against the wall trying to figure out what was going on and what more you could do to further this record. I'm glad to finally get to share the news with you. Please know, that I am extremely excited about some new opportunities already in the works.
Words cannot articulate my appreciation for all of your tireless dedication to Back Of The Bottom Drawer. I think I'm more frustrated for you all, because I know how hard you worked, and I never want to disappoint you. Your continued support means more to me then you will ever know.
Please know that I am leaving WITH my album. So these songs that you all have been hearing at shows and hearing about are in my hands. This is a great thing. In fact, I'm sitting in my office right now typing this to you and listening to The River. You know how much this music means to me, and I promise......this album will see "the light of day".
It is bittersweet, however, to break a relationship that is one of a creative nature. I had high hopes that my relationship would be long-lasting. I'd like to acknowledge the very, very hard work that so many did on my behalf at Vivaton Records. I made some great memories with some fine people.
Love, Chely

I have a lot of respect for artists who reach out to appreciate fans that way. And I really enjoy Chely's music. I hope she finds the right home for it.

I'm not surprised at the end result, but only that it happened so quickly. What creative differences surfaced 5 months after being signed that didn't surface before being signed? I think since the single failed to do anything at radio, Chely is disenchanted with Vivaton (or something like that).
I agree she has been a great custodian of her fan base. I was never enamored with her, but her fans love her.

I love the song "Back Of The Bottom Drawer". Mostly for the lyrics. She's not that great a singer, although her voice is interesting.
How easy is it for a country artist signed to an independent label to get radio airplay anyway? If the answer is "It's extremely difficult" then maybe she didn't sign on to that label to get mainstream country success. Unless no one else wanted to sign her.

She specifically stated that she wanted to be back on the radio in an article about her signing with Vivaton. I'd have to think she was disappointed with the way "Back Of The Bottom Drawer" performed. Independent artists can get airplay. Randy Travis went all the way to #1 last year with "Three Wooden Crosses". David Lee Murphy is currently Top 10 with "Loco". Clint Black went Top 20 earlier this year. It's more common now that it has been in the past.

I hate to say it, but maybe she wants it too badly.
I'm getting weary of all these artists, who, when interviewed, always tell us, sometimes boastfully, that they have no other skills, ambitions, or aspirations. (It's another one of those predictable, irritating, robotic quotes we often hear in interviews, but I'll save that rant for a different thread.)
Chet Flippo addressed this recently, I believe in Nashville Skyline. Chet talked about an artist that had great potential (I can't recall his name), but struggled getting anywhere. The artist had a real job and got a lot of his inspiration from that.

This comes as a pretty big surprise to me, and I'm disappointed for Chely. BOTBD should've been a big hit for her, but it got lost in the shuffle. Hopefully she can find another deal.

I agree with those who think it's a shame country radio relegated her single to the back of the bottom drawer when it came to airplay. It should have done much better. I'm not even that huge a fan of hers, but I thought the song was great, as was the video. I wish her the best.
