I don't hear "screaming" in his songs. What are you guys talking about? Not necessarily screaming, but stretching notes. Like in this song, "I wake up loving yoooouuuuuui".

Not necessarily screaming, but stretching notes. Like in this song, "I wake up loving yoooouuuuuui". I hardly noticed that. For screaming, in Randy Houser "Ky Kind of Country" he practically yells throughout the whole song. And he does that in "Whistlin' Dixie" too, and maybe some other songs. Craig Morgan's belting works for me. /shrug

I have never fully understood the screaming point of view for an artist's delivery on songs like this. For example, Tim McGraw's "Please Remember Me" is a song that has really long, high, sustained notes like this song does, but I have never seen anyone talk about that one as "screaming". Is it just because the high notes in that song sound like they are more natural for Tim than these ones do for Craig? I personally really like both songs!

Sustained notes do not work for Brad Paisley (ex: "I Can't Change The World") but for say, David Nail, it does work.

Is it just because the high notes in that song sound like they are more natural for Tim than these ones do for Craig? I personally really like both songs! It's because Tim doesn't sing as loudly when he holds those notes. Tim just holds the note without really projecting. Craig sings much more forcibly in general and can project a lot more. As "Love Remembers" shows, he can be a male Martina and outright belt if he wants to. The problem is, like with so many other belters, he doesn't seem to want to approach any song at anything less than full throttle. And even when he's not outright belting a huge note like the one at the end of "Love Remembers", he's still projecting his voice as much as possible to sound "bigger" and more forceful. The problem is that his songs don't always call for it, and it causes some of his work to sound overdone. In short, he's over-singing. That's what causes it to sound like "screaming" at times, particularly on something like "Bonfire". A song like that is supposed to sound fun and lightweight, but he goes all belt-y on it, and it just sounds like a noisy cluster@#!*@#. At least on this song, the belting doesn't seem that mismatched to the topic. To me, the full-throttle approach to the line "I wake up lovin' you" conveys anger and frustration, which are understandable emotions that one could feel in this situation. ==== ETA: And as noted by Markus, Brad Paisley doesn't sustain notes very well because his voice doesn't project that well, either. But David Nail can project and belt a note if he wants. The difference is that Nail still uses restraint when it's called for, instead of always belting everything.

^ That makes sense, thank you. Yeah, I can understand that. Looking back, he does seem to try to belt a lot! I don't completely agree with Martina as an example, because in my opinion none of her belty songs sound forced or scream-like as it does for Craig in a lot of those examples. Her voice has a lot of power, especially up high, so it sounds really natural for her. The point remains, however, that she does belt quite a bit! To me it seems that her issue is that she does not choose many songs where belting is not called for, which results in a lot of belting. It may not necessarily be out of place in any individual song, but I could see it collectively becoming a bit much for someone who is not a fan of the style. Whereas with Craig, there is a lot of unnecessary belting going on, like the "Bonfire" example.
Interesting, as I was typing this, "That's What I Love About Sunday" came on the radio! That's a blast from the past!
I guess I am just a fan of belty songs. I have never thought of the style as screaming, I just notice the power and emotion behind it, which as you pointed out is very fitting with this song. "Where Would You Be" is easily my favorite song from Martina, "Please Remember Me" from Tim, "I Could Not Ask For More" from Sara, "Forever Love" from Reba, "Tomorrow" by Chris Young, etc, and this one is definitely up there in Craig's catalog for me. It definitely captures the emotion of this song, especially when it jumps into the first chorus and he suddenly jumps up an octave paired with "And damn if I don't wake up lovin' you". It sounds so frustrated, and I love it!

Craig has cracked top 30 on mediabase and was up 2.0 million in audience as well on Billboard (Granite I know almost every song appears to have a great week on this chart). But for a song that is working on it's 27th chart week and coming off a top 30 single with a label that still hasn't truly won country radio over it's a very good sign. Probably a bigger number is the 16 adds "Wake Up Lovin You" got this week. My thought was this would die in the 33 to 37 range or so. Though "Wake Up Lovin You" has a pretty high dislike and a strong dislike (The strongest in fact) on the Callout Chart, so perhaps that has factored in it's slow climb within the top 40. Judging by the way the singles charts go now and days, it wouldn't surprise me if "Wake Up Lovin You" was a 40 week top 15 or 20 hit similar to "This Ole Boy". To me this is a much better offering from Craig (Minus the overdone belting he gives) than the fore mentioned "This Ole Boy" as well as "More Trucks Than Cars".
I am still wondering if there will be another single off his Livin Hits album. "We'll Come Back Around" (Co-written by Brandy Clark) would be my choice and a solid chance at getting back to the top 10. But Black River hasn't proven they can get a single from any artist of theirs that high, so we shall see.

If the Callout scores are truly as awful as you say sabre14 (I don't look at them that often myself), then I can't see this moving up much farther. It's already gone quite a bit farther than I expected it to, much like "More Trucks Than Cars," which I believe would've also peaked much lower had Black River not put some serious muscle into moving it up the ranks.

It's already gone quite a bit farther than I expected it to, much like "More Trucks Than Cars," which I believe would've also peaked much lower had Black River not put some serious muscle into moving it up the ranks. According to the latest Callout Chart "Wake Up Lovin' You" has the second highest dislike percentage (21%), along with a 4.3% strong dislike, which is indeed the highest. Another negative factor is it has a 9.5% neutral which might be that many listeners by now know the song and have heard it. You couple that with the 26 weeks on the chart, and you got a pretty strong case for this song not going much higher. Other than the 16 adds it got this week, which caught me off guard and caused me to post that last night. So you just never quite know. But "Stay" has a 0.0% strong dislike, so maybe I should just throw that whole chart out the window after reading that .

Don't know how this got posted in the Country News & Non-Singles Discussion Thread. Ha ha. Sorry about that, y'all!
This song is in the top 10 on Radiofeedback, though, and I'm not sure PDs always follow the Callout scores too closely. Sales aren't great for this song either, but I'm sure those will pick up once the song gets well into the 20's. It usually helps when a label discounts the iTunes price when the song is close to the top 20. Callout scores should also pick up as familiarity increases. I do think this will hang around for a few more months. It certainly isn't showing signs of being near its peak on the chart right now. I don't think it will make the top 10 because Craig is on such a weak label and doesn't have much momentum, but this song sounds so radio-friendly and unique that I can't imagine it peaking around the same place as "More Trucks Than Cars," which was incredibly generic.

After almost 3 months it has jumped into the Top 20 on Mediabase and it looks like sabre14 could be right on this on Craig having a 40 week or more run with this song.
I think that its run looks like a running counter going like 40-39-38-37 etc. all the way through. Seems like they have used every number from 20 to 40.

I also agree that he does sound as if he's belting out songs a lot more often than I think would be necessary, but it might just be the tone of his voice; he does have a history of slow climbing tunes, including 'That's What I Like About Sunday', which sputtered like mad between #40 & #50 on the Mediabase chart a la 'Mr. Mom' before it finally caught on and wound up being the #1 single of 2005 at both trades, a feat matched in 2007 and 2008 by 'Watching You' and 'Just Got Started Lovin' You', the last two songs to top the year-end charts at both Mediabase & Billboard.
I also don't see this going much higher depending on how much more patience his label has, with Tim, Sara, Luke, Craig Campbell & Tyler Farr all very likely to pass him next month, even with several songs ahead of him with over 25 weeks on the chart, with some on the rise and others heading downward.
EDIT--Just took a look at the Country Aircheck chart, and a gain of just 113 points in spite of a gain of 84 spins tells me at once that some stations are either reducing airplay on this tune or holding their airplay close to its current level, perhaps due in part to the five singles previously mentioned who are pursuing him.
Next month is going to be very critical to this song's prospects for becoming an even bigger hit.

Now if only Black River could get a Kellie Pickler chart run to look more like what they've been able to do with Craig Morgan.

Whoa, how am I just now discovering this song? I heard it on the radio today and wasn't quite sure it was Craig Morgan until I for sure recognized his voice. This went for adds way back in June of 2013? I don't know how I missed this, but I love this song. Can't say I've heard it on the radio yet until today. It seems to have already peaked though :(

It seems to have already peaked though :( Yeah, it looks like last week may have been its peak week. It gained 1 mil and moved up 2 spots to #16 on Billboard, but since Monday it's down about 550k on Mediabase, so there's a decent chance it'll go recurrent on Monday's BB unless they decide to give it a grace week. It gained just over 100k and 4 spins in today's update, so I think it may get a grace week. It would seem that Black River is fighting for a top 15 peak but I don't know if they'll get it. Sara Evans, Tyler Farr, Craig Campbell, and The Band Perry are all within striking distance--a couple of them will probably pass Morgan on Monday's chart if he doesn't go recurrent--and since no one from up ahead of Craig is ready to go recurrent, his path to the top 15 appears to be blocked, at least for the moment.

^I still can't believe I haven't heard this on radio until today. I'm sure I've seen this thread here but I'm not usually a Craig Morgan fan so I probably passed it and then it got buried on the board. I've already listened to this a handful of times tonight and love it. I also gave "We'll Come Back Around" a listen (a new tune from his hits album also released last year) and enjoyed it. Sounds like a hit to me but there's probably little momentum at radio for Craig these days.

I haven't heard the other song (We'll Come Back Around) but most of Craig's recent singles have tended to stick around and manage slow climbs into the top 20. "This Ain't Nothin'" had a long climb up to a #13 peak when he was still with BNA, and then his first single for Black River was "This Ole Boy" and that one also had a long climb up to a #13 peak. I guess "More Trucks Than Cars" missed the top 20 but it still got up to #27 after a pretty lengthy chart run, and that was coming after the obvious misfire "Corn Star" (not sure who decided it was a good idea to release such a turd). BNA also threw "Still A Little Chicken Left On That Bone" (another obvious misfire...Craig was screaming through that whole song) out there right before they dropped Craig. He's never been able to release more than 2 songs a year, but 5 out of his last 7 have done pretty well (including 2009's "Bonfire"), and that's even with switching from BNA to Black River. He's managed to be a pretty decent top 15 presence for the last 10 years or so, despite never becoming one of the really big stars. His discography is pretty similar to someone's like Clay Walker, Trace Adkins, or Gary Allan.

Morgan only has ONE chart topper, the biggest hit of 2005, That's What I Love About Sunday.

^Well, his discography isn't exactly similar to any of those guys, but Craig hasn't been charting as long as they have either. I feel like, overall, he is sort of in the same "tier" as they are when it comes to star status...certainly none of them ever graduated to the McGraw/Chesney/Urban (etc) club.

Even if Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, and Keith Urban were to quit tomorrow and Craig Morgan were to continue for the next billion years, there is no way Morgan will match the successes of that trio.

jhomes87, I found this article, it's about 1 month old and it seems that Craig and Black River are to make sure this becomes an even bigger hit til they let it fall. Craig Morgan Has Fans to Thank for Latest Hit, âWake Up Lovinâ Youâ
Craig Morgan has taken the long way into the Top 20 with his current single, âWake Up Lovinâ Youâ â but the singer says thatâs nothing new. He debuted the song at the Country Radio Seminar in March of 2013, and released it as the first single from his current album, âThe Journey â Livinâ Hits,â which came out in September. âThis is about typical for my records,â Morgan tells The Boot. âFor 14 years, every single takes around a year [to become a hit]. Itâs unbelievable. I just got the research, the label just showed me a bunch of stuff, and itâs right in line, or ahead of some of my bigger hits, as far as numbers and dates. So, no complaints.â He adds with a laugh, âIâll be honest with you â I do my job, and I donât think about it or worry about it. I kinda give it to God and let Him have it. Once it gets in the Top 20, where weâre at right now, I start looking at it a little closer, just to see whatâs going on with various stations, and those are things I focus on. But generally I go out and do my job, and I can tell by the reaction from the crowd whatâs going on with the song.â Morgan began a new label relationship with Black River Entertainment for his last album, âThis Ole Boy,â and while it placed several solid singles and sold respectably, it didnât quite result in the career impact that everyone involved was hoping for. Along with several other tracks on his latest album, âWake Up Lovinâ Youâ represents a musical change of pace for Morgan, featuring a soaring vocal and some fresh new lyrical and arrangement elements. âI think it was very important â I was at a critical point in my career,â Morgan acknowledges. âIâm good with that. I accept that. So it was very important for me to do something, or donât do anything. And this was a song that I felt like had enough of the things that people expect from Craig Morgan, while at the same time, it went somewhere else, where people could see a side of me that they might not have been able to see before. So it allows me to grow.â Morgan has been working radio and the road aggressively to support the single, but he says thereâs really only one thing that can make a song into a hit. âWhat makes a hit song is the fans. Period,â he says emphatically. âIf they love it, and they want to hear it over and over, and they request it and the radio has to play it, thatâs what makes a hit. Ultimately, if you play a song for 10 people in a room, and nine of them donât like it, it doesnât matter what you think. Itâs not a hit.â Now that âWake Up Lovinâ Youâ has cracked the Top 20, Morgan and his team are ramping up promotional activities to bring fresh attention to the track. âWeâre very excited about this song,â he states. âWe feel like we have a No. 1 song. Weâre now pushing to get it into the Top 10, and then weâll be pushing for No. 1. I have said, and I continue to say, itâs the biggest hit of my career.â

They can try, but I don't see anyway this comes within a sniff of #1. It's about to wrap up week #41 on the charts. It has only about a 3rd of the audience required of a #1 these days. Personally I don't even see a road for this to hit the top 10. There are way too many songs coming up behind that will pass this in a matter of weeks, and while it's researching decently on some surveys, it's pretty low on Callout America (for whatever that's worth).
He's neck and neck with Craig Campbell, Tyler Farr, and Sara Evans. Campbell and Farr definitely have more momentum--Campbell blasted into the top 20 via Clear Channel's On The Verge, and Farr with a strong-selling song on the heels of his breakthrough "Redneck Crazy". But The Band Perry, Jake Owen, and Billy Currington are closing in fast. Lee Brice is picking up steam, and there are new Brad, Blake, and Dierks songs that are all going to be going up quite quickly.
I'm sure Craig and Black River would love nothing more for this to become a huge #1 hit, and I'm sure that they are hoping it will get there. But I looks at things from a realistic perspective, and this article to me just reeks of them trying to put a really positive PR spin on the song and how it's been doing so far. All indications seem to point to this one being almost done with its climb. It's an ancient song and radio isn't going to stick with it for another 40 weeks, let alone 10-15.

I'm quite surprised that Black River has been able to keep this alive up to this point. I predicted it would go past 40 weeks and be a top 15 hit, but even I didn't see this song lasting 44 weeks. It has a fairly healthy bullet of 139 today on Mediabase, and has re-claimed it's peak of #15. I would have to think that "Wake Up Lovin' You" is at it's end, but I said the same thing to myself four weeks ago. That being said, I do in fact see this not going any further in audience and points.

Black River needs to stop with this song already and put their radio focus on Kellie Pickler for a change.

Black River needs to stop with this song already and put their radio focus on Kellie Pickler for a change. I think they've got quite a bit of focus on John King.. Maybe they could send out a 4th single from Kellie's album but I don't think they're going to find any success there either. Hopefully they keep trying though, even if we have to wait for new music from her. As for Craig, can this one hit the top 10? Maybe, but it would help if he can get there ahead of Jake, that other Craig, Tyler Farr, and The Band Perry, and I'm not sure that Craig Morgan can do that. Chris Young and Blake Shelton are coming up pretty fast behind as well, and I expect both Billy Currington and Brad Paisley to pick up the pace some more after slowing down a bit this past week.
