Wow, wasn't expecting the single to sound like that...granted I haven't heard the full track I really don't care for this single so far. After reading the reviews for this I was expecting something completely different. She is such a talented vocalist I really hope that this song shows her voice off.

I like it a lot, and I'm not a Sugarland fan at all or a fan of Jennifer's vocal quirks. As a friend pointed out on twitter, it has a definite Santana vibe, so I'm not sure how country it sounds. The moody minor key it's in reminds me of Maria Maria. I'm really curious now to see how the rest of the song sounds.

Pretty off the wall. Unless she's prepared to do some very extensive radio touring - I can't see this getting played much - it's not very radio friendly. She's a Countey format superstar. I've no doubts it'll not only get played but chart well. Top 10 or higher? That remains to be seen. The last four Sugarland singles peaked at #17,#2,#11,#32 - format "superstar" or not, radio wasn't exactly loving what Sugarland was doing when they went on hiatus. It remains to be seen how radio receives another off the wall sounding single from the voice of Jennifer Nettles.

I know better than to judge a song by a portion of that song, but I look forward to hearing the rest. Musically, the moody quality of the clip is very appealing to me. And I've never been bothered by the Nettles lack of clear enunciation -- I just figured she was a graduate of the LeAnn Rimes Mumble School and I can put up with it from LeAnn. I wish I had more opportunities to put up with it from either one of them.

I do hear somewhat of a latin flavor in this (instrumentals/beat). Intriguing clip, I agree. Not sure if I will love it yet until I hear the whole thing, especially since I am a fan of earlier Sugarland. I think she will get air play with no problem-if Sheryl Crow can get the airplay she's had with the (IMO) mediocre vocally/lyrically song Easy, I don't see why Jennifer won't do the same.

The moody minor key it's in reminds me of Maria Maria. I'm really curious now to see how the rest of the song sounds. In keeping with what you and rjz noted (well, kind of), the melody of the pre-chorus in the clip reminds me quite a bit of the pre-chorus of Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca." I'm loving the production in the clip -- it sounds fresh for mainstream country, the instrumentation sounds immediate and crisp, and Jennifer's vocal is up front without overwhelming everything else. Everything comes together nicely and even sounds like it may have all been tracked together. I prefer everything about the clip to anything I heard from The Incredible Machine, not least its more successful amalgamation of influences from different genres without leaving country behind. I'm not crazy about the chorus (especially lyrically), but the lack of strong hook there makes me think it won't be key to the rest of the song. I hope I think as highly of the full version of this.

It remains to be seen how radio receives another off the wall sounding single from the voice of Jennifer Nettles. I actually like what I hear in the clip, but I do agree with you. It's been a few years since Sugarland was consistently posting big hits. And while I personally enjoy what I'm hearing so far, the word "polarizing" came to mind, when I thought about how this would go over with country listeners. Now, Jennifer is a big enough name that this should cruise into the top 40 or top 30 with ease but I could see it really running into a wall after that. But I suppose I should wait until I hear the full song to make more concrete predictions. Also...Country Aircheck says that this song is premiering August 5, so my guess of it being sent out then but with the 19th for the adds date appears spot-on: » Coast Guard: Mercury's Jennifer Nettles (c) takes a Florida timeout with (l-r) the label's Damon Moberly and Bruce Shindler, and WQYK/Tampa's Dave McKay, Veronica, Brian Thomas and Jay Roberts. "That Girl," the first single from her upcoming solo project, debuts Aug. 5.So it looks like this will be at radio tomorrow!

Jennifer's cover photo on her Facebook states that this will be available on iTunes August 20th.

I really like what I'm hearing. I'm absolutely terrible at predicting how songs will do, so I have no idea whether country radio will go for it or not. But I hope it does!

This song sounds like a bad album track that gets skipped over on an otherwise average record.

I heard the full song today. Wasn't at all what I expected for this song. Has the possibility of growing on me but I didn't love it upon first listen, it was just OK.

It was sent to radio via PlayMPe at 2pm Central time. Listening to it. It's interesting.

WSIX played it twice within ten minutes. I missed the first playing but caught the second one. I really like the whole song better than the clip. I thought the clip was different but in a way reminds me a lot of her early pre-Sugarland songs. If you ever want to hear those, youtube has some uploaded just search Jennifer Nettles Band.

avalyn - that's exactly what some of my Facebook Sugarland friends said about the song when they heard the clip. I'm not a huge fan of Jen's early solo work but it definitely sounds like it. Gonna listen to the soundcloud link; will edit with my opinion when I'm done. EDIT: Love it, of course. The whole different vibe works for her. Can't wait to see how this does on radio.

I am disappointed with this. The song stays so flat and really goes nowhere, plus I also found her voice very grating on this track as well. Not a fan of this song and I don't think this will be a big hit at country radio. I could see it flaming out early after a fast, quick rise to about Top 30 or so on hype alone.
I wish she/Sugarland would go back to the music of their first two album eras; I used to love them then, but she/they've really fallen out of favor with me in the last few years. I've got my fingers crossed that there's better material on her solo debut, but I'm not particularly optimistic given how much I disliked The Incredible Machine and how uneventful this song is to me.

Disappointed. Didn't expect a "Livin' la Vida Loca" clone from Jennifer.

Disappointed. Didn't expect a "Livin' la Vida Loca" clone from Jennifer. Other than both songs have tango elements, this is NOTHING like "Livin' La Vida Loca."

I hope this "make-my-new-album's-first-single-sound-extremely-different-than-anything-else-on-the-radio" era ends soon.

I hope this "make-my-new-album's-first-single-sound-extremely-different-than-anything-else-on-the-radio" era ends soon. I actually hope there is more different music to come out to radio. I enjoyed this song from Jennifer. It was unique, but also had well-written lyrics to it. I don't want song-after-song that are direct carbon-copies of each other. If I hear more tunes about trucks and partying and drinking, I'll scream. So to hear a song like this come to radio is a nice, refreshing change.

I want less "out-there" songs like this, and more country-sounding like Sugarland circa 2004-2007, but not that I want more of the generic re-treads of songs about frat boy life to replace them.

How is this "out there?" anyone who is of the age that Jennifer Nettles is recognizes sounds heard here. It's artistic and creative. I LOVE me some early Sugarland stuff too but I also didn't dislike "Love On The Inside" or "The Incredible Machine" either.

Hmmm...I kind of like it (and I haven't liked anything since "Stay"), but I don't think it sounds very country. As someone else mentioned, there seems to be a Santana-like vibe going on. I wonder if they will try and push it to Pop, it might do pretty well!

I come from the camp of never really liking anything Sugarland has put out, especially the latest material, and more often than not find Jennifer's phrasing to be super grating. That said, after reading the comments here I was curious about this song and I like it which has really surprised me. I do have a feeling it might wear out its welcome fast with me though.
