This was their last Top Ten hit on the Hot 100, peaking at #10 Pop and #1 R&B in 1967. It was originally recorded in 1964 but was shelved by Motown Quality Control because it was felt that the circumstances and popular sentiment in support of the Vietnam War would not work it in its favor.
It was pulled from the vaults and finally released in 1967 when the tide had turned in popular opinion. The song took on a particularly poignant meaning for those soldiers stationed overseas and their families at home. A great example of timing and tone helping a song's chart run. Jimmy Mack, when are you coming back?
N.B. As of 1967, they were known as "Martha Reeves & The Vandellas".
Sheena Easton covered this for her Do You album in 1985, and it was released as a single, peaking at #65.
