This is an absolutely stunning track, co-written by vocalist Brenda Holloway and originally released in 1967, where it peaked at #39 Pop/#40 R&B. Unbelievably, it was her last single for over 20 years - she left Motown disillusioned and wound up doing some backup vocals for other artists before retiring from music to start a family.
Blood Sweat & Tears would cover this just two years later in 1969, sending it to #2 on the Hot 100.
This is one of my all-time favorites from Motown. It's hard to understand why Brenda's version it wasn't a smash - but at least the song itself was, in some form.
