This song, another Smokey Robinson composition for Mary, peaked at #7 Pop and #1 R&B in 1962.
This is actually one of the first songs about an abusive relationship, and the lyrics are exceptionally clever. Initially, the listener is led to believe that Mary is referring to two different men - one who is "sweet and kind" and the other who "treats me bad, makes me sad, makes me cry". Ultimately, the two lovers are revealed to be one and the same - "'Cause you're a split personality / And in reality / Both of them are you."
