This hit #1 in the US (Pop), #3 R&B and #1 in the UK in 1958. Every time I listen to it I'm absolutely in awe of the lead vocal by Tony Williams.

This record came out in January, 1959. The Platters, led by Tony Williams, made many hits from 1955 to the early 1960's. This is one of them. I like this record. I think Tony Williams has a very good singing voice. How does this compare with today's music? Do you like this record? www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2di83WAOhU

One of the all time great vocal performances. A #1 hit for them.

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes is an old number from the 1933 musical Roberta but in my opinion the song will always be associated with the Platters . I did not think too highly of their Federal sides ,to me just run of the mill R&B but once producer Buck Ram took over the reigns on the Mercury label they changed virtually overnight into a group with incredible sound and success in the charts. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes was actually recorded by the group while they were in France and topped the US charts and here in Britain also ........A truly great recording
