Also, I'm not going to say that ageism in the industry is non-existent, but its extent is overblown by some. Most older artists simply don't have an interest in putting out material aimed for pop success, which they are of course 100% entitled to. If the material isn't contemporary sounding, you can't expect them to be big mainstream hits.

This isn't a writing class. I am just typing as I go. 
Many older artists (Madonna, Cher, Elton John, Celine Dion) and many more have continued releasing pop/dance oriented music.

I think it's important to remember that Blurred Lines may have been barely beaten by Roar, but it still has a HUGE lead over #3. Without Roar, how long would it have kept the spot? Wake Me Up and Royals have less than half his points. We'll see soon enough how long he stays at #2.

westlife- "Skirt" doesn't even have enough point to be near Bubbling Under the Hot 100- fuhgetabout No. 1 on the Hot 100.

So, it looks like Fred Stobaugh's credit on "Oh Sweet Lorainne" is more of an honorary one, as he has no vocals on the track. Kinda like producers who get credit, even when they have no vocals.

Fred Stobaugh: Widower's love song makes iTunes top 10

A 96-year-old who wrote a song for his late wife has made the US iTunes top 10, alongside Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

Fred Stobaugh, whose wife Lorraine died in April, has no previous musical experience and wrote the song on a whim for a competition.

He submitted his handwritten lyrics by post and, although the contest was online-only, the organisers were so moved they put the words to music.

Oh Sweet Lorraine is number seven on US iTunes and has 1.9m YouTube views.

Billboard magazine said the song had sold 6,000 copies so far, placing it at number 49 in its rock digital songs sales chart.

The track is also in the iTunes charts for Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Luxembourg.

"Oh sweet Lorraine," the chorus begins, "I wish we could do all the good times over again."

Stobaugh does not perform the song himself - on his original submission, he wrote: "I don't sing, I would scare people, haha!"

Vocals are provided instead by Jacob Colgan, whose Green Shoe Studio organised the original contest.

A documentary about the recording of the song, uploaded to YouTube in July, explains how the recording came about.

"What made Fred's entry so special to us was, one, it's an online contest. People are supposed to upload their videos," Colgan says in the clip.

"But, instead of a video, we received a very large manila envelope. Well, I was excited to see what it was. Lo and behold, it was a letter from a 96-year-old man who said, 'I've written a song for my wife'.

"He sounds like a sweet guy," he continues, "but, as I'm reading through the letter, I begin to realise that his wife had just passed away a month earlier."

Stobaugh says the song, his first, came to him out of the blue.

"After she passed away, I was just sitting in the front room one evening by myself…it just [came] to me. I kept humming it."

The finished recording is a simple, country-tinged lullaby. The documentary shows Stobaugh overcome with emotion as he hears it for the first time, covering his face with his hand as he tells Colgan: "It's wonderful, it's wonderful".

"She was just the prettiest girl I ever saw," he says of meeting Lorraine in 1938. "Real timid-like. I just fell in love with her right there."

but by that 4th week wont Britneys song already have been out a full week (song and video etc..) and make its debut? If the song is even decent how on earth wont it debut at #2 or #1 (as Robins #s will be significantly lower than they are now)?

I think Royals becoming a big hit is a natural progression from the alt. crossovers like Ho Hey and Radioactive. The vocals remind me a bit of Lana Del Rey, who's also found success stateside, if not so much on radio until now.

We need some new artists to come in and make a change...NO MORE Katy Perry, NO More Lady Gaga, No MOre Rihanna....all of their stuff can be played without a pause and it would sound as if the song just never ended.
How can people be so boring and want the same pop artists to continue releasing album after album of the same material.
Give variety a chance. That's why I pay more attention to what is hitting the charts in more European countries.
Our charts are stale , with a few exceptions. So I am glad Avicii, Lorde, Zedd and others have finally crossed over to America.

I'm sorry, but how can you say that Katy, Gaga, and Rihanna can have all their hits played back to back and sound the same, say you want variety, and then champion Kylie Minogue, whose more guilty of releasing similar sounding singles over the past 13 years than pretty much any other pop star? Spinning Around, Love At First Sight, I Believe In You, Wow, All The Lovers, etc. Some of those are really good, but let's not pretend they're pulled from different influences or anything like that. That Skirt song also uses influences that Rihanna already channeled on Rated R.

There is also nothing that new brought to the table by Wake Me Up. Intro, vocals, buildup, drop, vocals, buildup, drop. Nothing structurally different from songs such as The Time (Dirty Bit), Party Rock Anthem or We Found Love. Same for Zedd's songs.

Sounds to me that you are just bitter. Not sure about what, but no need to try to spread lies and try to take out your aggression on those who are successful.

^Yeah, I just listened to those European songs to see what all the hype was all about and there is nothing different and special about those songs. So I have no idea what that previous poster was talking about. He was acting like those songs were so creating and exciting. And I hate that "Royals" song. It is too boring. She beat him by 4%. I think his sales and airplay are dropping too much and hers are holding too steady for the time being for him to get back to #1, but it could happen.

It's nice to see a song like "Wake Me Up" becoming a major hit in the states.It is also nice seeing other artists get hits this year such as "Cups","Clarity" and "Safe And Sound". It is great to have some variety on the charts. I'm sure Rihanna will be back with another top 10 hit when she releases the right single. "Summertime Sadness" going top 10 shows that radio likes to play another artists besides the usual ones.
