Yah, the Canadian singles chart got real bad in the late 90s/early 2000s, when labels stopped issuing CD singles for the hits- it sorta was like what Hot 100 Single Sales became- only trouble was, that was Canada's official chart.

In France they only started including downloads a few years ago, so until quite recently, their chart was only physical sales, and the figures were really low. Like really low, I think a song could chart with less than 10 sales at one point. And that was their official chart too.

Airplay has more weight than sales though on Canada's Hot 100. A song that's not even top 25 / top 30 on sales can go top 10 due to heavy airplay.

History was made the week of September 14, 1968. For the first time since the 1958 inception of the Hot 100, an artist debuted within the the top 10. It had been over five months since the Beatles had released their last single, and so the anticipation for "Hey Jude" when it was released in late August 1968 was especially strong and so were its sales its first few days out. They were so strong in fact, that "Hey Jude" managed to debut at #10 on the Hot 100; the highest debut on the Hot 100 up until that time.

Hella racist. Replace that JT song that nobody is requesting or purchasing with Drake's "Hold On, We're Going Home" and move it into the Top 3. THEN you may have a point. (Also, replace Miley with Lana Del Rey- yes I'm quite a fan of "Summertime Sadness" now)

Over on the Digital Songs chart, Katy Perry rules at No. 1 for a third week with "Roar," selling 448,000 downloads. The song gained 14% in weekly sales, thanks in part to Perry's performance of the cut on the Aug. 25 VMAs. "Roar" debuted at No. 1 with 557,000, then slipped to 392,000 in its second week.

At No. 2 on Digital Songs this week is a new entry from Eminem, whose "Berzerk" blasts in with 362,000 downloads. "Berzerk" is the first single from "The Marshall Mathers LP 2," due Nov. 5.

Sales for "Berzerk" are comparable to the first-week performance of his last album's first single, "Not Afraid." That 2010 song, which led "Recovery," bowed at No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart with 379,000.

It moved 201,000 downloads in its first full week on sale (up 124%), after bowing last week with 90,000 after less than two full days of availability. (It went on sale on Saturday, Aug. 24.)

Avicii's "Wake Me Up!" is pushed back 3-6, despite a 1% gain this week. It sold 176,000, up from 175,000 a week ago.

Jay Z's "Holy Grail," featuring Timberlake, falls 4-7 with 170,000 (down less than 1%). Lorde's "Royals," like "Wake Me Up!," is also forced down the chart, slipping 6-8 with 167,000, though it gains by 16%.

Cyrus also has another song in the top 10: "We Can't Stop" descends 7-9 with 157,000 (though it's up by 10%). It was part of a three-song medley that Cyrus performed on the VMAs with Thicke, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar.

Using the airplay/7500 and digital sales/12 formula (not completely accurate)

Blurred Lines: 210m AI, 244k sales = 20333 + 27973 = 48306
Roar = 97m AI 448k sales = 12938 + 37333 = 50271

It all comes down to streaming.

Last week Robin had 6.1 million streams, down 8%, and Katy had 4.7 million, up 24%. This week they should be around the same, with a small lead for Katy in streaming.

BUT then we have to remember that this formula predicted an 8% difference between Roar and Blurred Lines during its debut week, and it turned out to only be 3%. Meaning the BB formula gives a bit more points to airplay than this one, which would put Katy and Robin at basically a tie... Going to be a nailbiter.

Looks like "Roar" is a lock for #1, especially since it is now #1 on Spotify with more than 1.9M streams. This weeks Digital Songs top 10 is a good reminder of how misleading chart movement can be. "Wake Me Up" and "Royals" both increased by more than 10% but lost 2 positions.

It depends on what weighting one gives to downloads.  The last known weighting was 12:1, I have been using 9:1.

If it is 12:1, then "Roar" has about an 17,000 point advantage in sales.  If airplay difference is 120M and using 7,500:1 as the weighting, Blurred Lines has a 16,000 point advantage.  So Blurred Lines would have to make up a 1,000 point deficit in streaming.  Roar is leading Blurred Lines on Spotify by 429,000 on demand streams which makes Blurred Lines task that much more difficult.

Now if you believe like me that weighting for sales is 9:1 then "Roar" has no problems hitting #1.

Nonetheless, "Roar" probably will climb to the top.
