Sheryl Crow's country hit was more of an exception than anything (due to her age/gender), and the follow-up to her Top 20 country hit is currently struggling in the 30s, so it's not like country radio is embracing her with open arms. Still, she had an easier time because she's always been kind of an "honorary" country music celebrity in the past, and her label has worked hard to back her recent foray into the market.
At any rate, I'm sure Cher's label knows that she has no hope of garnering any country airplay so I doubt they would even bother.

^Indeed- she charted once on country, back in the late 70s, and that was only No. 87.

indulgecountry, you really know your country info! Wasn't it true years ago that country really DID play older FEMALE country singers? It seems like so many of the older country artists were able to chart and get lots of play years ago. I mean going back to the 1960s and 70s and 80s. Now that I know older gals struggle with airplay even at country that is an eye opener. Of course I know how impossible it is for older women on POP and even AC radio. The fact that Cher is getting any adds at AC amazes me.
On mainstream radio, POP and AC older MEN CAN get adds. At AC radio older male artists around Cher's age get adds all the time (Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Elton John and other older men). I can't think of any women in their late 60s getting even AC radio adds unless its for their old Christmas stuff.

^Older men aren't faring any better than females at mainstream radio (if you mean mainstream top 40). So, that genre is not gender-discriminant, at least once you pass a certain age (50 and up). :)

Holiday Guy I meant Adult Contemporary. That is the only chart older men really get on to and older women nearly never do. By older I really mean older. The aritists in their upper ages like over age 60 or 62 or higher. Artists in those upper ages like Paul McCartney, Rod Steewart and Elton John do get AC adds. It is so hard for a SOLO older female to do this. This is why many are sort of shocked CHER has got enough Adds to enter the AC chart at all with a simple ballad. She sang I Hope You Find It on TV back in the early fall but that has been it and no video and no real promo since the fall. While the older men I mentioned routinely enter this AC chart I cannot think of any recent female over 60 or 65. It is just sad to see the AC chart full of the same artists we see on all the other charts. Years ago the Billboard AC Chart was 50 positions long then cut to 40 positions then cut to 30 positions. Cher's IHYFI has had airplay since the fall but under the BB AC 30 positions. If they still had a 50 position chart I bet her song would have been in this chart for the past several months at the lower numbers.
Now that soon to be 68 year-old Cher has broken the glass and entered the AC chart again, I hope future songs by other older women such as Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Nicks, Carley Simon, and other great older gals also enter this chart.

Surprised it's dropping back already, but maybe it will pick up again. In any event, a top 20 at AC ain't bad for her these days.

Cher is amazing when you think of it. I mean she first was on the Billboard Bubbling Under chart in 1964 and then hit #1 in 1965. Radio in the USA is ageist but also SEXIST when it comes to older WOMEN. So many older FEMALE artists still are alive and most of them record but forget radio play. Wonderful older women of the 60's and 70's should still be able to get on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart but don't. Older women of Cher's era like Diana Ross, Bette Midler, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand, Lindsey Buckingham, Dionne Warwick, Olivia Newton-John, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Gladys Knight, Chaka Kahn, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Nicks, Carley Simon, and others never seem to be able to get enough airplay to even crack onto the Billboard AC Chart unless its for an old Christmas song or if they feature or are featured on someone's track. It is just sad to see how hard it is for these older gals to get any airplay so Cher might only be at #20 on the Adult Contemporary Chart but it is amazning for a gal who first charted in 1964 and turns 68 in May.
By the way, I KNOW none of these older women can chart on POP and mainstream but Adult Contemporary used to be where older acts DID chart. Now most of the artists on the BB AC chart are the same younger artists we see on all the other Billboard Charts.

Did Lindsey do something we don't know about? :o
And, yes, many females in Cher's age range don't get airplay of any kind. So while Cher's airplay may be tiny compared to today's big hits, at least it's something.

Any radio play for someone pushing in on 70 is wonderful. Older Woman have it tough in music. AC radio is easier to crack for older MEN. I just hope the airplay going Cher's way no matter how little is a start so other older women like the ones mentioned on here get a shot at some AC airplay for their new stuff.

Hmmm... she's prepping for the tour. Perhaps a televised performance was rerun? It's not discounted on iTunes.

Just knowing an old gal like CHER is on any USA radio stations is hope for all female vocalists of a certain age. We all know how hard it is for older gals to get new music on the radio. You also don't get much older than Cher.
