I still find it really strange how this one took so long to take off. Sales are decent, this is an obvious radio smash, and Billy Currington's a well-known artist who's had hit after hit, but this chart run was like something we'd see from a brand new artist. Has Billy Currington ever had a run this slow before? Just about everything except "Pretty Good at Drinkin' Beer" has been a slow climber for him.

About how many weeks do his songs usually take to climb the charts? I seem to remember "Like My Dog," which was probably the song he had out when I first started following the charts, missed the top 20 but didn't stall much in the 30s and 40s.

^ I think he's usually in the 30 week range most of the time. At the least I remember "Good Directions" spending forever in the 30s.

I seem to remember "Like My Dog," which was probably the song he had out when I first started following the charts, missed the top 20 but didn't stall much in the 30s and 40s. "Like My Dog" definitely got up the chart quite a bit quicker but it flared out almost as quickly. I have the Billboard chart run for that one...19 weeks on the chart: 53-38-34-33-34-34-33-34-30-27-26-26-25- 24-26-25-25-24-28-recurrent And the chart run for "Love Done Gone" was much quicker too, but since it stalled at #11, it spent only 23 weeks on the chart. Had it gone up higher it would've probably been a 30+ week run. Billboard chart run for "Love Done Gone" was 23 weeks: 59-45-36-33-30-29-27-24-23-23-19-16-16-15-16-17-17-13-14-14-12- 11-12-recurrent And 29 weeks for "Let Me Down Easy": 46-43-37-35-32-31-29-26-22-21-20-18-15-15-13-13-11-10-9-9-8-6-5-3-2- 1-3-5-9-recurrent "Pretty Good At Drinkin' Beer" spent only 19 weeks on the chart, reaching #1 in week 16: 48-36-31-22-21-18-15-12-11-8-7-7-4-3-2- 1-2-5-9-recurrent I don't have the chart runs for his songs before that, but I do know that "That's How Country Boys Roll" charted for 28 total weeks (a 1-week #1) and "People Are Crazy" spent 25 weeks on the chart, 2 of those at #1. "Don't" charted for 30 weeks with a #2 peak, "Tangled Up" charted for 20 weeks with a #30 peak, "Good Directions" was on the chart for 38 weeks with a #1 peak, "Why, Why, Why" 28 weeks #13 peak, "Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right" for 39 weeks with a #1 peak, "I Got A Feelin'" 33 weeks with a #5 peak, and "Walk A Little Straighter" 30 weeks with a #8 peak.
"We Are Tonight" certainly needed more time to catch on but it doesn't surprise me...there are so many male artists with radio-friendly songs out, and Billy just had to wait for room to open up in the top 30 and for this one to finally slip through the cracks. I know "Hey Girl" went #1 but it did spend 33 weeks on the chart and I think it's largely because it had been a couple years since he had a big hit. There was a pretty good gap between "Like My Dog" and "Hey Girl", and of course LMD (and even "Love Done Gone") weren't exactly huge hits. I think Mercury has a better understanding of the charts than most would think. They probably knew it would be a big uphill battle with this one, even though it sounds like the type of song that radio would jump all over. But Billy is no Luke or FGL, and there are probably at least a dozen or more male artists that are much more popular than he is. The We Are Tonight album only opened with about 30k sold. He's a recognizable name but just not a huge artist, and I think Mercury understood that "We Are Tonight" probably wouldn't really start to catch on until early spring, even though they released it back in November. Another thing to consider is single sales...the slow-burners often wind up selling more, and so a record company might not mind if they have to invest the better part of a year into one chart run, especially when album sales are down. For the artists like Luke who are selling albums by the bucket-load, quick chart runs are definitely fine (and probably preferred) because someone that red hot sells more and more albums with each popular single, and despite the quick chart runs, the singles are still huge airplay hits and huge sellers as well. There can only be a few really big names, though, and Billy's never quite gotten there. Most artists don't. This song might spend more than 35 weeks on the chart but I think it can get to #1 or close to it.

This song has really grown on me. Billy Currington might be one of the most underrated artists of the past 10 years. It's perfect for the summer, and is a great song to sing to. There's some great album cuts on this album too that I think would make great singles, particularly One Way Ticket and 23 Degrees and South.

I'm really loving hearing this on the radio. Starting to hear it a lot more. It always puts me in a good mood and I find myself bobbing my head and moving around in the car. Great feel good song.

This really is such a great "feel good" song. I've never considered myself a huge Billy Currington fan, but "We Are Tonight" has become one of my favorite songs out there right now. It's such a great summer song, so the timing is perfect. Hopefully it'll keep climbing up the chart, and end up peaking near the top in a few months.

I think I've decided to just give up. I really enjoy this song now. Perhaps it was the warmer weather that did it, or the fact it just took that long to grow on me. I didn't hate it, but it was just kind of there when it started it's chart run. My favorite part about this song is when I'm driving down the road when that chorus is going. The gradual progression and arrangement of the chorus combined with the great summer weather is infectious and nearly impossible not to love. The fact that Sam Hunt co-wrote this is so evident. I've noticed he absolutely loves using "Whoa, Whoa, Whoa's", or "Oh, Oh, Oh's" in his songs like "Come Over", "Cop Car", "Raised On It" and this one.

Billys best work yet I totally agree that One Way Ticket would be a smash single in my opinion. I think 23 Degrees and South would do really well too. Unfortunately, I don't know if we will see a 3rd single. Billy has already been working on the next album for a while, and seeing how We Are Tonight is going to take almost 40 weeks to peak, I think the safe bet is they will take a few months off and come back with a brand new single for a brand new album. But I certainly want to see a 3rd single.

Billy's 12th top 10 on Billboard Country Airplay! This is from Billboard: HUNTING PARTNER: Sam Hunt also co-wrote Billy Currington's "We Are Tonight," which pushes 11-10 to become Currington's 12th top 10 on Country Airplay. He'd most recently reached the upper tier with "Hey Girl," which led the Oct. 19, 2013, list. This is from my column: 5. FOR THE SECOND TIME: Billy Currington lands at #10 with the title track to his current CD, We Are Tonight. It has already produced a #1 in Hey Girl. It is the second time this decade he has charted consecutive top tens. He last did it in 2010 with Pretty Good At Drinkin' Beer (#1) and another #1 in Let Me Down Easy in 2011.

I wonder if Sam Hunt is mad at Billy Currington for recording We Are Tonight as he was at Keith Urban for releasing Cop Car. Currington will be helping Hunt collect his first #1 if Currington can top Joe Nichols on the airplay chart.

Sam was Billy's opening act, and Billy was very gracious to invite Sam to perform the song with him on stage. They are good buddies.

I don't know what the deal was with "Cop Car", but as kml567 stated, Sam and Billy appear to be friends who get along just fine. Also, this wouldn't be Sam's first #1. Sam co-wrote Kenny Chesney's "Come Over" as well. ** Mercury has "Power Up for #1" ads out in the daily Aircheck emails for "We Are Tonight" but the song definitely isn't going to get there this weekend. Billy is almost 850 spins behind Joe Nichols, and Joe is still gaining, as Red Bow wants the Mediabase #1 this weekend as well as a 3rd week at #1 on Billboard. Billy should finish the week at #2 on both charts but I think he will still have a shot at #1 next week but only if he can hold off Lee Brice. My guess is that "We Are Tonight" peaks at #2 on Billboard but I can see it maybe getting to #1 on Mediabase next weekend...still, there's a good chance it could get stuck behind Lee Brice on Mediabase as well and have to settle for #2 on both charts.

I'm thinking that there will be a split too. I prefer Billy's song, so I'd rather see him get the Billboard #1. A split would be great though, because then hopefully both Billy and Lee will peak to make way for Dierks and Tim/Faith to each have nice runs at the top.

Going to be a close call next week between Billy and Lee for #1 on both charts. Billy has the higher audience but Lee has the higher spins right now on Mediabase. I think "We Are Tonight" might have to settle for a #2 peak on at least one of the charts. That's not all too bad considering this song hasn't been a huge seller, nor has the music video generated much excitement. It will be interesting to see if they decide to release a 3rd single or not from the album.

I would say "Closer Tonight" is a good single choice but the "tonight" in the title seems like it might mess up a radio push. Though, both songs are very different.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if "We Are Tonight" is it for singles from this album. He's currently working on his next album and both singles from this one have moved fairly slowly up the charts. Sometimes things change though and their are delays with the next album - so Mercury could then throw out one more if they choose.

I agree that this one will have a tough battle with Lee Brice this week, but it definitely seems like Mercury is gonna push for one more week. My belief is based off Billy's big gain today--up 500k and 124 spins. If this past week had been the last upward week, we almost certainly would've seen WAT take a tumble in today's update, as it marks the start of a new Mediabase week. Chris Young started to fall in last Monday's update, but Billy still put up strong numbers today so I think the label is going to go for #1, even if they can only get there on one chart.
It'll be interesting to see how close Billy and Lee are (in both BB audience and MB points) when the charts come out tonight.

The label should've released "Until You" as a single from Billy's "Enjoy Yourself" album... it was really good.

Country No.1 Billy Currington We Are Tonight +2558 Thomas Rhett Make Me Wanna I'm curious to see if this can hold up all week. I actually started thinking on Monday that perhaps we could see a rare Billboard-only #1 here. Billy's lead on Billboard was 1.9 million on Monday's chart, whereas Lee is ahead in spins on Mediabase (although Billy out-gained him in spins today, while Lee had the bigger audience gain). The points gap was only about 240 on Sunday's published Mediabase chart (with Billy ahead as well). So far in the last 2 days Lee has out-gained Billy by about 700k in MB audience, so there's certainly a chance that he could overtake Billy on Billboard. At the very least it doesn't look like it would take much for Lee to take the lead on Mediabase.

Now, with Billy taking over #1 on MB and outgaining Brice in overnight spins gains, 156 to 3, it's hard to picture Billy falling short on either chart. And I'm posting that so that you can write something tomorrow that starts with "How things can change in a day" yourself. It was impossible to see a day like this coming. Even so, Billy leads Lee by 1.5 mill and 80 spins, hardly impossible obstacles to overcome for Lee. But it does look like Billy's people were sending a message -- "Try and pass us and you won't get a #1 on either chart." If I were Dierks, I'd slow it down and leave time for both Billy and Lee to get a week on top. It looks like "play nice" is the order of the day. Maybe.

I agree, Zazie. I woke up this morning expecting to see some sort of signal in the update that would tell us who was getting to #1, but I didn't think it would be so lopsided in favor of Billy. I definitely agree that it looks like "We Are Tonight" will be #1 on both charts come Monday. I still think it wouldn't have taken much effort for Lee to overtake Billy, but it indeed looks like Curb has cooled their jets and decided to play nice.

Why this guy isn't bigger, I don't know. Some people might consider Like My Dog a misstep. I don't.
If you've never heard That Changes Everything, check it out. He's a great storyteller IMO. Hell, I enjoyed his remake of Kenny Roger's Lucille

Hell, I enjoyed his remake of Kenny Roger's Lucille The opening of "That Changes Everything" all the way up until the chorus is just straight-up awesome. "Said I know a shrimp boat captain out of Galveston, and I've been thinking I'd go down and work a spell, aw you never can tell, might suit me fine, spend some time out on the bay". I just love it so much.
