It’s funny, because Twitter user T3chJ3t said that early in the year he saw people coming around on Closer (like Cicabeot1, although he never disliked it). But for him it went from “meh” when it first dropped to hating it halfway through its time at #1, then outright loathing it come time for his worst list. He also predicted that some will come around on Shape Of You, so I wonder how many have.  |

Ok look at the end of the day if you or anyone else don't like Closer that's a valid opinion and I don't wanna sound like I think everyone has to like a certain song. That being said, this comment doesn't hold up at all. I wasn't using the fact that the public likes it to argue that the song is objectively good, that doesn't make sense because no song is objectively good, that just isn't how it works. The reason I made that comment was because someone else edited my first comment to say "undeserved" and that just plain isn't true. The only way it would be undeserved is if the Chainsmokers and Halsey were creating bot accounts to stream the song and drive up numbers. The reason the song had such a strong chart performance is because people like it, the Chainsmokers succeeded in creating a song that people wanted to hear and that elicited a positive reaction in millions of people. It isn't that they just heard it and didn't flip away on the radio, they actively sought it out, as it hit #1 in both streaming and sales and the videos combined have like 2.2 billion views. So while you may not like the song and that's seriously fine, it's gonna make back-to-back top 10's and it's a deserved achievement for what I think is a great song. Deserved not because it's necessarily the best hit of the last few years but because that year-end achievement is an accurate reflection of the widespread enjoyment everyone got from the song. TL:DR Wasn't using the public to argue that it's a good song (that would be dumb), was using it to argue that it deserved its success (which is true) Edit: also you people had better not mention Trump. If you do you'll force me to bring up the discussion, ,"does Look What You Made Me Do count as a hit? Is it particularly special?" in order to make it stop. |

The lyrics extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of musical theater most of the lyrics will go over a typical listeners head. There’s also Drew's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his writing- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these lyrics, to realise that they’re not just good- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike The Chainsmokers truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the poetic crones in Drew's existential lyric “Baby pull me closer, in the backseat of your rover,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Drew Taggert’s genius wit unfolds itself on their radio. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Chainsmokers tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

I don't mean to offend anyone here, and I know everyone has their opinions, but I honestly find it hard to take someone's comments about "Closer" seriously after they make the claim that "Look At Me!" is one of the best songs, if not THE best song, of 2017. Lol. Speaking of which, I really hope it misses the official year-end list. And yes, I do enjoy "Closer" very much.
