I wonder which session instrumentalists, producers, songwriters, etc. have been involved with the most #1s. Somebody, go figure that out! I don't know the exact number but I remember when the Funk Brothers documentary came out it touted that they had performed on more number one records than anyone else in history. They played the tracks for all the Motown #1s, plus maybe a few other songs they were hired for. That documentary blurb may have included number ones from the R&B chart as well (which would make sense), so Paul McCartney may still have them beaten on the Hot 100.

the beatles and Mariah. both took all (or almost) their number ones to the very top on their own! now with all the collabs and features... it makes some people's totals less impressive. its the same way with iTunes now, people have so many more charting hits. The Beatles were lead on all 20 of their #1 hits. Being a group that's kind of obvious I guess. However, they did give Billy Preston a featuring credit for his organ playing on the "Get Back" single.

I don't think it demeans Rihanna's success at all, but I do find it more impressive when an artist can get solo #1s as opposed to "just" being a feature. I think this way of everyone though. I know they count, but in my head I always have a little footnote. Rihanna's *13 #1 hits.

Doesn't Elvis have 17 number ones? Why isn't he on any of the lists? Many of those pre-date the Hot 100 No less than 10 of Elvis' 17 #1 hits pre-date the Hot 100; and almost all of his most impressive ones.

Actually, Billboard does link some acts to the bands- i.e. Estefan/Miami Sound Machine, Paul McCartney/Wings, etc. It explained as much for the Hot 100 50th Anniversary.

^ Ah, thanks, HG. It does get a little muddled.
Whitburn no longer counts featurings in #1 tallies, so he would list Rihanna at only 10. In this age of internet articles on EW and Billboard and vocal fan wars, I'm not sure this is the way to go (conflicting so dramatically with BB). Record Research's attitude is that the bulk of featured artists are disposable, interchangeable and secondary to the primary artist. That sounds reasonable when its a twenty second rap by an unknown artist, but these high profile collabos are more like duets, relying heavily on crucial chorus based vocal hooks.

"Diana Ross and the Supremes" was the name of the act, so that would be why they're not added to Ross' total. Same with "Sonny & Cher" tracks. As others have stated, there are different ways to look at things. As of late, I've been looking outside of Billboard and at sources like Cashbox for other No. 1s and such, to flesh things out. Actually, they were credited as the Supremes until 1967, when Florence Ballard left the group. From 1967 onward, they were credited as Diana Ross and the Supremes.

I wonder which session instrumentalists, producers, songwriters, etc. have been involved with the most #1s. Somebody, go figure that out! Yas!!! I know Narada Michael Walden had like..9 #1 hits as a producer..(Whitney helped lol) I would guess that Quincy Jones must have a large number of #1 hits as a producer under his belt (for all his Michael Jackson work). Although so does the Beatles' producer George Martin. BTW, what was Quincy Jones' first #1 hit as a producer? "It's My Party" by Lesley Gore in 1963.

I don't think it matters really, as long as they say something like "not including features" when giving chart stats. In Billboard's articles they do this all the time, if someone holds a record including features, they also specify who has the record without features.

IMO "featurings" should be excluded from counts. There is a different between a true duet where the leads share verse AND chorus and someone singing a hook or whatever. But, MO is irrelevant, Billboard will determine who will hold what records. They already manipulate those stats. As long as the music is good, I really don't care who gets credit for what.

I have to say, on our new Hot 100 #1 song either the autotune used on Rihanna's vocals has gotten a lot better, or her actual voice has improved a lot in the last few years.
Maybe it's both. LOL

I'm surprised there's been no announcement yet of this week's top ten Of what? The Hot 100 came out around noon today. The article is on page 7.

Rhianna's numbers to me are impressive and not impressive at the same time. She has all these numbers one's in part to the fact that I cannot remember more than a few months passing without Rhianna having either a single out or featuring on one for 8 years. That is unusual as most artist take breaks and older artist did not feature very much if at all on other people's songs. Had Madonna or Mariah done that their totals during their peak years would have been much much higher.

Rihanna just passed The Supremes and Madonna and tied Michael Jackson 20, the Beatles 18, Mariah Carey 13, Michael Jackson 13, Rihanna 12, Madonna 12, the Supremes She has put out so much more than these acts did and so many features were as these other legendary acts did it on their own with breaks. Also she did not have the legendary album sales and #1's that the other acts had. Her name just does not fit in here. I think era's are so different they should not be compared on the same lists!

She tied Jackson's Hot 100 mark. But, she'll probably pass him in the future. The features (as lead and featuring act) sure have helped RiRi reach these milestones fast- she also did the same with top 10s. Rihanna's features are features in name only. She clearly owns the entire record. Her influence is overwhelming on the songs she's "featured" in.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/chart-watch-monster-lives-title-013939655.htmlChart Watch: “The Monster” Lives Up To Its Title By Paul Grein 9 minutes ago Yahoo Music "The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna jumps to #1 on the Hot 100, displacing Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball." "The Monster" is Eminem's fifth #1; Rihanna's 13th. It's their second #1 together: "Love The Way You Lie" logged seven weeks at #1 in 2010. Since 1955, only four other artists have had 13 or more #1 hits. The Beatles lead with 20, followed by Mariah Carey with 18, Elvis Presley with 17 and Michael Jackson with 13. (Diana Ross joins this list if you combine her six solo hits with 12 she had fronting the Supremes.) This latest #1 enables Rihanna to push ahead of Madonna, whose tally of #1s has been stuck at 12 since "Music" in September 2000. In pulling ahead of Madonna, Rihanna also becomes the one-named solo artist with the most #1 hits in chart history. Here are all one-named artists who have had four or more #1s: Rihanna (13), Madonna (12), Usher (nine), Prince (five), Ludacris (five), Beyonce (five), Eminem (five), Nelly (four), Cher (four) and P!nk (four). For all her success, Rihanna is still just 25 (she will turn 26 on Feb. 20). A few individuals were even younger when they landed their 13th #1 hits. Paul McCartney and George Harrison were both 24 in March 1967 when the Beatles landed their 13th #1, "Penny Lane." Elvis Presley was 25 years and seven months old in August 1960 when he landed his 13th #1, "It's Now Or Never." (The Fine Print: I'm counting the double-sided blockbuster "Don't Be Cruel"/"Hound Dog" as one #1.) Eminem is the first rapper to land five #1 hits as a lead or co-lead artist. "The Monster" follows "Lose Yourself," "Crack A Bottle" (a collabo with Dr. Dre & 50 Cent), "Not Afraid" and the aforementioned "Love The Way You Lie." Ludacris and the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy have also had five #1 hits, but both tallies count featured credits. Puff (a.k.a. Diddy) has been a lead (or co-lead artist) on four of his #1s. Ludacris has been a lead artist on only two of his. "The Monster" holds at #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for the sixth week. "The Monster" reached #1 on the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart on Nov. 9. It's Eminem's second single to reach #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K.; Rihanna's seventh. Eminem's previous transatlantic #1 was the Oscar-winning "Lose Yourself." Rihanna's previous songs to reach #1 in both countries are "Umbrella" (featuring Jay Z), "Take A Bow," "Only Girl (In The World)," "What's My Name?" (featuring Drake), "We Found Love" (featuring Calvin Harris) and "Diamonds." Only the Beatles had more "transatlantic #1 hits" than Rihanna. They had 13 (and McCartney, Lennon and Harrison each had one more on their own). Elvis Presley is in third place with six. Madonna is next in line with five. "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha jumps from #4 to #2. This marks the first time that collabos that pair a male solo artist and a female solo artist have held the top two spots simultaneously since the summer of 2010, when "California Gurls" by Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg and "Love The Way You Lie" held the top two spots for six straight weeks (switching the lead at the midway point). "Timber" is #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the second straight week. The song tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. Avicii's "Wake Me Up!" holds at #6 for the second week. The smash reaches the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. It's #1 on Dance/Electronic Songs for the 14th week. Katy Perry's "Roar" drops out the top 10 this week, but it tops the 4 million mark in digital sales in its 17th week. That's faster than any other song in digital history. Perry also held the old record: Her 2011 smash "E.T." (featuring Kanye West) topped the 4 million mark in its 18th appearance on Hot Digital Songs. "Roar" is Perry's seventh song to reach the 4 million mark. That's more than any other artist. Rihanna in second place with five, and that includes two featured credits. (Perry is in the lead position on all seven of her mega-hits.) Here's a recap of this week's top 10 songs. The Top Five: "The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna jumps from #2 to #1 in its sixth week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (186K)… "Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha jumps from #4 to #2 in its ninth week on the chart. This is its fourth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (193K)…OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" jumps from #5 to #3 in its 25th week on the chart. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (146K)…Lorde’s "Royals" dips from #3 to #4 in its 23rd week on the chart. This is its 15th week in the top 10. The Second Five: Avicii’s "Wake Me Up!" holds at #6 for the second week in its 24th week on the chart. This is its 16th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #9 (78K)… Imagine Dragons' "Demons" holds at #7 for the second week in its 33rd week on the chart. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (94K)… "Say Something" by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera jumps from #10 to #8 in its fifth week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (165K)…Passenger's "Let Her Go" rebounds from #13 to #9 in its 19th week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #6 (107K)…"Hold On, We're Going Home" by Drake featuring Majid Jordan rebounds from #11 to #10 in its 18th week on the chart. This is its 13th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #24 (44K). Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week (though both remain in the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs). One Direction's "Story Of My Life" drops from #8 to #11. Digital sales rank: #5 (108K)…Katy Perry’s aforementioned "Roar" drops from #9 to #12. Digital sales rank: #10 (68K). Pentatonix's "The Little Drummer Boy" is the week's top new entry at #13. This matches the peak position of The Harry Simeone Chorale's classic original version of the holiday standard from 1958. The song has also charted for Johnny Cash (#63 in 1959), Jack Halloran Singers (#96 in 1951), Moonlion (#95 in 1975) and, as "Drummer Boy," for Justin Bieber featuring Busta Rhymes (#86 in 2011). In terms of digital sales, Bieber's version is the most popular (214K), followed by the Harry Simeone Chorale (193K) and then a legendary medley by the odd couple of Bing Crosby/David Bowie: "Peace On Earth"/"Little Drummer Boy" (167K). Then: covers by Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band (154K), Faith Hill (89K) and Josh Groban (80K). Pentatonix's version is from "PTXmas," which leaps from #29 to #7 on The Billboard 200. Katy Perry's "Unconditionally" jumps from #15 to #14 in its seventh week…The Neighbourhood's "Sweater Weather" jumps from #18 to #15 in its 26th week. The song tops the 1 million mark in digital sales…Ellie Goulding's "Burn" jumps from #21 to #16 in its 14th week. The song topped the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart for three weeks over the summer…Macklemore & Ryan Lewis land their fourth top 20 hit of 2013 as "White Walls" (featuring ScHoolboy Q & Hollis) jumps from #22 to #17 in its 12th week. Mariah Carey's 1994 holiday classic "All I Want For Christmas Is You" re-enters the chart at #26…Florida Georgia Line's "Stay" jumps from #30 to #28 in its eighth week. The song holds at #1 on Hot Country Songs for the second week…Bastille's "Pompeii" leaps from #38 to #29 in its 17th week…Grammy front-runner Lorde lands her second top 40 hit as "Team" vaults from #57 to #32 in its 11thweek...Eminem's "Rap God" rebounds from #48 to #39 in its eighth week. The song has already climbed as high as #7…Luke Bryan's "Drink A Beer" leaps from #49 to #40 in its fifth week…Martin Garrix's "Animals" leaps from #63 to #51 in its 12th week. The song topped the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart for one week in November. Justin Bieber's "All That Matters" re-enters the chart at #53. The song has climbed as high as #24. Bieber's "Change Me" is the week's second-highest new entry at #59. Both songs are expected to appear on Bieber's compilation album Journals, which is due next week. In between the two Bieber hits, John Legend's "All Of Me" jumps from #72 to #56 in its ninth week. Here's a shocker: Idina Menzel's original version of "Let It Go" leapfrogs over Demi Lovato's pop cover version. Both versions are featured on the soundtrack to the animated Disney movie Frozen. Menzel's version vaults from #89 to #57. Lovato's jumps from #64 to #58. Both are in their second weeks. American Authors' "Best Day Of My Life" jumps from #81 to #64 in its fourth week…Jason Aldean's "When She Says Baby" jumps from #93 to #70 in its second week…John Newman's "Love Me Again" jumps from #85 to #71 in its third week…Drake's "The Language" jumps from #84 to #72 in its seventh week. The song has climbed as high as #51... Jon Pardi's "Up All Night" jumps from #91 to #74 in its fourth week. Avicii's "Hey Brother" debuts at #78. "Wake Me Up!" reached #4…Britney Spears' "Perfume" re-enters the chart at #79. The song has climbed as high as #76…"Who You Love" by John Mayer featuring Katy Perry debuts at #80. It's from "Paradise Valley." Childish Gambino lands his first chart hit as "I. The Crawl" debuts at #86. It's from his sophomore album, "Because The Internet," which is expected to enter The Billboard 200 inside the top 10 next week, with first-week sales in the 80K range. "Up Down (Do This All Day)" by T-Pain featuring B.o.B jumps from #99 to #87 in its third week…Frankie Ballard's "Helluva Life" debuts at #89. Kelly Clarkson's "Underneath The Tree" debuts at #92. Even if "only" 10 of her #1's are her's lead artist, I still think that's very impressive for a 25 year old lol
I still her as having 13 #1's though. She had a lot to do with "The Monster", "Live Your Life" and "Love the Way You Lie" being this big. It's not just an 8-bar verse she laid down on these songs.

peigan- yes, I was referring more to the hits credited as "Diana Ross & The Supremes"- it was a regular recording act, hence why hits credited under that name generally aren't added to Diana Ross' total )(in the USA, anyhow).

She has put out so much more than these acts did and so many features were as these other legendary acts did it on their own with breaks. Also she did not have the legendary album sales and #1's that the other acts had. Her name just does not fit in here. I think era's are so different they should not be compared on the same lists! Did The Supreme's have large album sales? (I'm seriously asking) The Supremes recorded with Motown who did not belong to the RIAA. Motown artists' albums were not certified with the RIAA. After 1980, some albums were certified. The Supremes have 3 Gold albums. Very under-certified...

If Glee Cast and Lil Wayne have more Hot 100 titles than Elvis, Rihanna perfectly fits in that list, she'll probably surpass Michael Jackson and will be closer and closer to Mariah depending on how longer Rih stays relevant. You'll have to deal with it oh and stop being bitter, records are meant to be broken.

If/when someone gets 13 #1s as a lead artist I'm sure Billboard will mention it as well (them tying Michael Jackson's #1 as a lead artist). I've seen them talk about other records and specify "as a lead artist" before. The Official Charts Company do this in their articles in the UK too.
