Wow that post quoted above me reeks of genre arrogance, thats such bullshit. Thats like saying Country songs that didnt crossover to pop cant be major hits on their own, really? or is that contempt just for urban/r&b songs. How about pop songs that dont crossover to other genres, does that make them genre based and limited or what. I'm sorry but a hit is a hit regardless of its genre, maybe you should expand beyond pop radio. #whateverman

I wouldn't say Rihanna is the biggest artist. I think Katy is bigger....she it got all those #1s in shorter time period and without needin to release an album every year. Rihanna has had many flops on her way and I hate the fact that she is getting credit for the monster. I don't remember Kanye getting much credit for E.T or Kesha getting credit from Right Round.

Those are different things. Kanye was on the intro of the single version and had a verse. He go his credit on Hot 100. Your other example: Ke$ha HERSELF asked to be not credited on "Right Round" in the US but it was released with the featured credit. Anyway, she sang the bloody hook, she deserves the credit.

Not a flop, but compared to Pour It Up or Birthday Cake for example... 59 on the Hot 100 compared to 19 and 24, both with better longevity and no video to fuel sales.

someone above mentioned they think Katy is bigger than Rihanna based off of bigger hits shorter period of time. I believe a bigger artist is someone with longevity. So neither one of these artists fall into that category. We are given way too much product in too short of time , I find both these artists a little too repetetive because no time is taken between albums to really have something fresh and new.

Saying who's the bigger star requires more than just tallying up how many number ones they have. It's all the intangibles like who gets invited to sing at the Superbowl or the White House inauguration or gets asked to do product endorsements. By that criteria I'd say Beyonce is still the biggest star. Despite the controversy of whether she lip synched at the inaugural, people still believe in her singing ability. She's like the gold standard for singing.

Rihanna, on the other hand, just has an amazing number of hit songs. It doesn't matter if they hit 59 or they hit #1, they're still very familiar to the public. I know someone who went to her concert and said it was just one hit song after another. If perception is reality, then Rihanna is the reigning queen of pop.

Katy has had some very catchy songs but she doesn't have the volume of songs that Rihanna has and she doesn't have the buzz of someone like Miley and people aren't overawed by her singing. She's a work in progress right now in terms of star power.

Coco Q.U.E.E.N, we are in a Hot 100 thread talking about peak positions of a chart that uses a variety of metrics to determine relative weekly popularity between a variety of format platforms. Of course a huge genre chart topper is a hit on its home radio format. But overall and culturally (my point), they may fall short. No need to be rude. No arrogance here, just decades of industry based experience. You seem to think you're talking to an uninformed pop radio devotee as opposed to someone who has been in the industry for 25 years, and owns every hit since 1955.

With regards to Kendrick, I don't think Don't Kill My Vibe is very pop-friendly tbh. It's one of his less catchy songs. It's a nice song, but I never got it stuck in my head, and I didn't want to listen to it repeatedly. Swimming Pools is the song that should have been a top 10 hit on pop. It was a massive club hit, it's got LOADS of synths and bass, really epic chorus (much like Firework or Only Girl), and it's catchy as hell. I can't understand why it didn't do better.

Why didn't Ke$ha want to be included?

I remember her saying she didn't want to be credited on it because she wanted to get big on her own accord, or her first big hit to be hew own, or something like that. I remember this, since at the time I thought it was strange that she was so confident that she'd have solo success.

Around the same time when Right Round was out there was a similar situation with Just Dance. At first Akon (who was really big at the time) was featured on it, but they removed him because they didn't want him to take the focus off Lady Gaga.

Well, "Timber" is #1 on digital but "The Monster" should be #1 on the Hot 100, I'll be shocked if "Wrecking Ball" is #1 again. that chatroulette thing has slowed down.

The pair scores a historic topper: Rihanna ties Michael Jackson for the third-most leaders (13) in the Hot 100's history, while Eminem ties for the most No. 1s (five) among rappers

Eminem and featured artist Rihanna roar 2-1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their collaboration "The Monster," which gives each artist a new slice of history in the chart's 55-year archives. The song also shoots 4-1 on the Radio Songs airplay chart, where Rihanna adds more accolades.

With the coronation, the pair dethrones Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball," which had returned to the top of the Hot 100 last week for a third cumulative week at No. 1.

As we do each Wednesday, let's dig into the numbers behind this week's top 10, going especially Rihanna- and Eminem-centric in honor of each's latest trip to the summit.



Impressively, Rihanna ties Michael Jackson for the third-most leaders in the Hot 100's history. Now with 13, she passes Madonna and the Supremes, each with 12. Upon the chart-topping ascent of "The Monster," here's an updated look at the acts with the most No. 1s dating to the Hot 100's Aug. 4, 1958, inception:

From her first week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 with "SOS" (May 13, 2006) through this week's chart (dated Dec. 21, 2013), Rihanna's registered 13 leaders in a span of seven years, seven months and eight days, marking the fastest run to the sum by a woman; Mariah Carey took a slightly longer seven-year, eight-month and 19-day route (from 1990's "Vision of Love" through 1998's "My All"). Only the Beatles reached 13 No. 1s more quickly: just three years and 17 days between 1964's "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and 1967's "Penny Lane." (The other of the four acts with at least 13 leaders, Michael Jackson, spanned nearly 23 years between 1972's "Ben," his first solo No. 1 apart from the Jackson Five, and 1995's "You Are Not Alone.")

Eminem, meanwhile, makes his own historic move, as he ties the record for the most Hot 100 No. 1s (five) among rappers. Here's an updated look at the rap acts with the most leaders:

With all five of his No. 1s in lead roles, Eminem passes 50 Cent, Diddy and Nelly (four each) for the most such chart champs among rappers.

"The Monster" is Eminem and Rihanna's second shared Hot 100 No. 1. The two teamed for "Love the Way You Lie" (with Rihanna also in a featured role; she's boasted lead billing on 10 of her 13 No. 1s). The song topped the chart for seven weeks in 2010. Bonus fun fact: the last two solo artists to pair for multiple Hot 100 No. 1s prior to Eminem and Rihanna? Nelly Furtado and Timbaland. With Furtado as the lead act, "Promiscuous" led for six weeks in 2006. In 2007, they reversed roles (and added fellow featured artist Justin Timberlake) on "Give It to Me," which ruled for two frames.

"The Monster" climbs to the Hot 100's top perch with another coronation, and more honors for Rihanna: it charges 4-1 on Radio Songs, gaining by 13% to 135 million in all-format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS (and claims the Hot 100's top Airplay Gainer award for a fifth straight week). With the jump, Rihanna passes Mariah Carey, 12 to 11, for the most No. 1s in the airplay chart's 23-year history. Usher ranks third with seven Radio Songs No. 1s. "The Monster" is Eminem's third topper on the ranking.

The track racks a fourth week atop the On-Demand Songs chart (2.4 million U.S. streams, according to BDS, up 6%), while reaching a new peak (4-2) on Streaming Songs (5.4 million, down 5%). It holds at No. 2 on Digital Songs (after three weeks at No. 1) with 186,000 downloads sold (down 19%), according to Nielsen SoundScan.

As previously reported, "The Monster" takes over atop the Pop Songs and Rap Airplay radio-based charts this week; on the former, she passes Katy Perry for the most No. 1s (11) on the chart's 21-year history. The song concurrently spends a sixth week at No. 1 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Rap Songs rankings.

Ah right, there are other songs in the Hot 100's top 10 this week.

Pitbull's "Timber," featuring Ke$ha, jumps 4-2 on the Hot 100, notching a second week at No. 1 on Digital Songs (193,000, down 19%). It rises 7-4 on Streaming Songs (4.6 million, up 2%) and 10-8 on Radio Songs (76 million, up 16%).

"Timber" narrowly edges out OneRepublic's "Counting Stars" for the Hot 100's runner-up rank, as the latter song advances 5-3. "Stars" ascends 10-5 on Streaming Songs (4.3 million, up 3%), 6-5 on Radio Songs (118 million, up 9%) and keeps at No. 4 on Digital Songs (146,000, down 17%).

Lorde's former nine-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Royals" slips 3-4. It holds at No. 3 on Streaming Songs (5 million, down 15%) and falls 2-4 on Radio Songs (120 million, down 9%) and 5-7 on Digital Songs (107,000, down 26%). Still, the track tops Hot Rock Songs for a 15th week.

Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" drops 1-5 on the Hot 100, marking the steepest slide from the summit since Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" made the same move the week of Sept. 10, 2011. "Ball" leads Streaming Songs for a 10th week, but decreases by 57% to 8 million after last week's sum was swelled by the breakout of Stephen Kardynal's parody video featuring the song's audio. The ballad remains at No. 7 on Radio Songs (89 million, down 16%) and departs the Digital Songs top 10 (9-12; 63,000, down 49%) for the first time since it debuted at No. 13 the week of Sept. 7. RCA Records has announced that fellow ballad "Adore You" will be the next single from Cyrus' album "Bangerz."

Rounding out the Hot 100's top 10, Avicii's No. 4-peaking "Wake Me Up!" is a non-mover at No. 6 (and crowns Dance/Electronic Songs for a 14th week), while Imagine Dragons' "Demons" holds at No. 7; A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera's "Say Something" rises 10-8; Passenger's "Let Her Go" re-enters the region at a new peak (13-9); and, Drake's No. 4-peaking "Hold On, We're Going Home," featuring Majid Jordan, rebounds 11-10.

Wow, had no idea (and how eerie) that Rihanna beat Mariah to her 13th #1 by just 1 month and change lol. I thought it took Mariah a little longer to get her 13th #1. Thing is, after My All she had just two more (from the Rainbow album) then had that dry spell for 5 years until TEOM and E=MC (so it took her 18 years to get 18 #1s) At the rate and pace Rihanna is going/ putting out songs (and being only 25) it's looking very likely she's gonna surpass Mariah in a LOT less time than 18 years. The weird irony is she's just 5 #1s away from equaling Mariah in the US and Madonna in the UK! lol
