Not trying to throw shade, but I think it's interesting to call out how much money was actually spent on Gaga vs Bey for the digital record. I'm not sure what the average price was for the non-99 cent Born This Way but I'm going to guess high for the benefit of the doubt and say $11.99. So we get: Gaga: $11.99 x 222,000 + $0.99 x 440,000 = $3,097,380 Beyonce: $15.99 x 617,000 = $9,865,830 People spent more than 3 times as much on Beyonce. She cashed in nearly $10 million dollars (before iTunes/label percentages, etc.) in 3 days. How much did Gaga's label actually make though? I know Amazon sold it at a huge loss. Amazon paid full price for each album discounted. It was a loss leader for their new cloud service.

Gaga actually got a great deal out of that since Amazon was willing to take the cut for it to help promote their new services. I think every 99 cent deal or discounted deal after that had some sort of formula worked out where amazon and the artist's label took a hit rather than just Amazon.

I think it was a double-edged sword, though, because less physical copies were sold. Weren't there stories about some stores being unhappy with the overstock of CDs?

^Again, I was talking solely about what consumers spent, completely ignoring anything on the back end. I am fully aware that Beyonce herself did not keep every single penny -- I was making the "cashed in" as an offhand comment, not a statement of accounting.

Garth's album has now sold 482k-ish. Unless he drops to under 20k this week, we can now be certain that more than 500,000 copies have been sent to Wal-Mart. ^Again, I was talking solely about what consumers spent, completely ignoring anything on the back end. music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/chart-watch-beyonce-christmas-surprise-173426415.htmlChart Watch: Beyonce’s Christmas SurpriseBy Paul Grein - Yahoo Music - Dec. 18, 2013 Beyonce's "Beyonce" sold 617K copies in the U.S. in its first three days of release. That's the fourth highest one-week sales total so far this year, following Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" (968K), Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" (792K) and Drake's "Nothing Was The Same" (658K). Both Timberlake and Drake are featured on B's star-studded album, which consists of 14 songs and 17 videos. The album is an iTunes exclusive for now. A CD/DVD combo is due on Friday. This is the greatest one-week total for an album by a female artist since Taylor Swift's "Red" bowed with sales of 1,208,000 in October 2012. It's the greatest total for an album by an R&B artist (though Beyonce obviously transcends that label) since Mary J. Blige's "Growing Pains" bowed with 629K in December 2007. This is the fastest start for a Beyonce album. The old record was held by 2006's "B'Day," which sold 541K in its first week. "Beyonce" sold nearly twice as many copies in its first week as B's 2011 album, "4" (310K). This was a stealth release that few knew about as late as last Thursday, when initial sales projections had Garth Brooks holding on to the top spot for a second week. Beyonce's album was put on the market without any advance hype; as Hits magazine put it, "without any wind-up, preamble or tease." This is contrary to the usual pattern with superstar releases, where there is a carefully-planned build-up that entails from two to four months. Only one album has ever sold more digital copies in one week. That's Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," which bowed with 662K in May 2011. (An estimated 440K of those were sold for just 99 cents in Amazon's MP3 store). Beyonce's album sets a new record for the fastest start by a digital-only release. The old record was set by the all-star "Hope For Haiti Now," which sold 171K copies in its first week in January 2010.The old record for a digital-only release by a single artist was Lil Wayne's "I Am Not A Human Being" which sold 110K in its first week in October 2010. With this debut, Beyonce becomes the first female solo artist to reach #1 on The Billboard 200 with each of her first five studio albums. Only one other artist in chart history has hit #1 with his or her first five albums: Rapper DMX, who achieved the feat between 1998 and 2003. Only three other African American women in chart history have amassed five or more #1 albums. Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey lead with six. Alicia Keys has also had five. (Carey and Keys are biracial.) In just one week, "Beyonce" has topped Rihanna's "Unapologetic" as the year's top (non-rap) R&B album. And it's closing in on P!nk's "The Truth About Love" as the year's best-selling album by a female artist. (Both of those albums sold additional copies in 2012.) Beyonce needed a career lift. Her last album, "4," was her least successful. It has sold "just" 1,381,000 copies (great for most artists, a disappointment for Beyonce). It was also her first album to fail to spawn at least one top 10 single. The album's highest-charting single, "Best Thing I Never Had," stalled at #16. "Beyonce" is the seventh album of 2013 to sell 500K or more copies in its first week. This is the first year that seven albums have sold 500K in their first week since 2008. The chart news isn't as good for another female megastar. Britney Spears' "Britney Jean" tumbles from #4 to #22 in its second week. It's Spears' first studio album to fall out of the top 10 after just one week. Her previous shortest run in the top 10 for a studio album was 2007's "Blackout," which spent two weeks in the top 10. Michael Jackson had amassed 43 weeks at #1 on The Billboard200 (with "Thriller" and "Bad") before Garth Brooks landed his first #1 album, "Ropin' The Wind," in September 1991. But last week, Brooks pulled ahead of Jackson in terms of total weeks at #1. Brooks' bargain-priced box set "Blame it All On My Roots: Five Decades Of Influences" brought his career total of weeks at #1 to 52. Jackson logged 51 weeks at #1. Two artists have had more weeks at #1 than Brooks: The Beatles (132 weeks) and Elvis Presley (67 weeks). Brooks' album dips to #2 this week. It holds at #1 on Top Country Albums for the third week. It's Brooks' longest-running #1 album on the country chart since "Scarecrow" held tight for seven weeks in 2001-2002. Kelly Clarkson's "Wrapped In Red" holds at #3 for the second week. The album benefited from NBC's airing last week of "Kelly Clarkson's Cautionary Christmas Music Tale." As of this week, "Wrapped In Red" has a narrow lead over The Robertsons' "Duck The Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas" as the best-selling holiday album of 2013. "Wrapped" has sold 578K copies, 9K more than "Duck." There are two chart weeks to go in 2013. Which will come out on top for the entire year? Stay tuned. R. Kelly's "Black Panties" debuts at #4. It's his 15th top 10 album. Only three other African American artists have amassed 15 or more top 10 albums. Johnny Mathis and Mariah Carey have each had 16. Jay Z has also had 15. ("Black Panties" is one of the most explicitly sexual album covers and album titles ever on a top five album.) Childish Gambino's sophomore album "Because the Internet" debuts at #7. His 2011 debut, "Camp," peaked at #11. Gambino (real name: Donald Glover) was a writer on "30 Rock" and is a cast member on "Community." (Incidentally, this is the first album with the word "internet" in its title to crack The Billboard 200. What took so long?) The "Frozen" soundtrack jumps from #11 to #10 in its third week. It's the first soundtrack to an animated movie to make the top 10 since Cars hit #6 in June 2006. Both are Disney movies. The album is #1 on Top Soundtracks for the third week. Idina Menzel and Demi Lovato are both climbing the Hot 100 with the album's key song. "Let It Go." The song was nominated for a Golden Globe last week. "Say Something" by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera jumps to #1 on Hot Digital Songs (233K), displacing Timber" by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha, which dips to #2 (187K)."The Monster" by Eminem featuring Rihanna dips from #2 to #3 (175K). Which of these songs will top the Hot 100? You'll find out later today when we post my Songs blog. Here's a recap of this week's top 10. The Top Five: Beyonce's "Beyonce" debuts at #1 (617K). It's her fifth top 10 album…Garth Brooks' "Blame it All On My Roots: Five Decades Of Influences" dips from #1 to #2 in its third week (172K). It has been in the top five the entire time… Kelly Clarkson's "Wrapped In Red" holds at #3 for the second week in its seventh week (136K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time… R. Kelly's "Black Panties" debuts at #4 (133K). It's his 15th top 10 album…One Direction's "Midnight Memories" drops from #2 to #5 in its third week (123K). It has been in the top five the entire time. The Second Five: The Robertsons' "Duck The Halls: A Robertson Family Christmas" dips from #5 to #6 in its seventh week (108K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time…Childish Gambino's "Because The Internet" debuts at #7 (96K). It's his first top 10 album… Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" drops from #6 to #8 in its sixth week (83K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time… Katy Perry's "Prism" holds at #9 for the second week in its eighth week (59K). This is its seventh week in the top 10… The "Frozen" soundtrack jumps from #11 to #10 in its third week (56K). Four albums drop out of the top 10 this week. I already told you about Britney Spears' "Britney Jean." In addition, Pentatonix's "PTXmas" drops from #7 to #26, Michael Buble's "Christmas"drops from #8 to #13 and Mary J. Blige's "A Mary Christmas" dips from #10 to #11. ("Christmas" returns to #1 on Top Catalog Albums, displacing Pentatonix's EP.) Zac Brown Band's The Grohl Sessions, Vol. 1 debuts at #25. Dave Grohl produced the EP…Neil Young's "Live At The Cellar Door" debuts at #28. Young recorded the album at the Washington, D.C. club in 1970. This is his sixth live album to crack the top 30. The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug soundtrack debuts at #39. Howard Shore composed the score. The movie was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. The soundtrack to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey debuted and peaked at #30 a year ago. Five albums top the 500K mark in sales this week: "Beyonce," aforementioned Christmas albums by Kelly Clarkson and The Robertsons, Lady Antebellum's "Golden" and Lorde's "Pure Heroine." Eric Clapton's "Crossroads Guitar Festival 2013" moves up to #1 in its fourth week on Top Music Videos. Coming Attractions: B.o.B's Underground Luxury is expected to be next week's top new entry. To My Readers: Look for my recap of the year's top albums and singles today (Wednesday). Also, because of the holidays, Nielsen SoundScan will post the weekly charts on Thursdays, rather than Wednesdays, the next two weeks. That will push Chart Watch back one day for the next two weeks.

Paul Grein is not Billboard What is important to one person might not be important to the next Glad Billboard agrees with me & Paul <3 Glad you're happy. Not sure why my comment was quoted. Paul Grein is still not Billboard. Not everyone will deem the the same stats with the same amount of importance as everyone else. So I guess my comment has not changed. And yes I agree with you too. Beyonce did indeed get her 5th #1 studio album in a row.

Animated Disney soundtracks that have hit the top 10 (Non-Pixar):
Cinderella - #1, 1950 Aladdin - #6, 1992 The Lion King - #1, 1994 Pocahontas - #1, 1995 Tarzan - #5, 1999 Frozen - #10, 2013
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio went top 10 on certain singles charts in 1939 and 1942, and they would be considered "soundtracks" today because they were bundled into a set of three or four 78rpm singles.
It's interesting, to me at least, that so many iconic Disney soundtracks never sniffed the top 10. Pocahontas (which was riding the massive good will of The Lion King) made it all the way to #1, yet Beauty and the Beast petered out at #19. The Little Mermaid, which has since been certified 6x platinum, peaked at #32.

www.roughstock.com/blog/country-album-chart-news-the-week-of-december-18-2013-garth-brooks-duck-dynasty-cassadee-pope-parmalee-scotty-mccreeryCountry Album Chart News: The Week of December 18, 2013: Garth Brooks, Duck Dynasty, Cassadee Pope, Parmalee, & Scotty McCreery By: Matt Bjorke Last Updated: December 18, 2013 It took a stealth iTunes release of Beyonce’s new self-titled audio/visual album for Garth Brooks to lose the #1 sales slot on the Top 200 chart but Garth’s still #1 with a sales gain. Blame It All On My Roots has sold nearly 500,000 copies in just 3 weeks on the charts, not bad for a $25 box set of cover songs which also includes his The Ultimate Hits collection and two DVDs, one of his Wynn “Blame It All On My Roots” live show and for his music videos. The Robertson Family of the A&E program Duck Dynasty may no longer have the #1 Christmas album of 2014 (Kelly Clarkson’s Wrapped In Red passed it this week) but it still is one of the Top 6 albums in all of America this week with another sale figure of 108k, bringing the family a Gold record for the novelty recording and it’s entirely possible they have a Platinum record before the sales for the album are put away for a year (and who knows if their popularity will be as high as it is this year). The #3 best-selling Country music album this week is Luke Bryan’s Crash My Party, a record which has moved 1.4 million albums to date. Florida Georgia Line’s Here’s To The Times...This Is How We Roll is next with sales of 1.421 copies sold through the past 54 weeks (the deluxe ...This Is How We Roll version was released three weeks ago). Finally, the #5 album this week is Zac Brown Band’s iTunes-only EP The Grohl Sessions Vol 1. the EP has sold 27k in one week. Based On A True Story… sits at #6 with sales of 18k bringing the total for the album up to 1.067. Music Of Nashville Soundtrack (Season 2 Vol. 1) debuts at #7 this week with sales of 18k while Blake Shelton’s Cheers It’s Christmas is at #8 and surpasses the 500k sold mark with 507k total. Taylor Swift’s RED sits at #9 with sales of 16k and a total sales number of 3.926 million copies sold. Finally, Danielle Bradbery’s self-titled debut sits at #10 with sales now at 68 after 3 weeks. The singer’s “My Day” was recently chosen by NBC as the theme for the network’s coverage of the Sochi Olympics. Our 10 Notables includes a mixture of Up and Coming stars from “Reality TV,” Parmalee, and also Christmas Music, including Trace Adkins’ “The King’s Gift” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Wrapped In Red.” Lady Antebellum’s On This Winter’s Night joined Blake Shelton’s Christmas album to become a Gold album (scanned), a feat also accomplished by their latest album Golden this week (though it’s unlisted below). That album has now sold 511k to date. Parmalee’s Feels Like Carolina debuts (#12 overal) and sold 14k in its debut. The album features the multi-week Mediabase #1 hit “Carolina,” a song which was certified Gold by the RIAA this week. Jake Owen’s two week old “Days Of Gold” is next in our notable rundown with sales of 53k in two weeks on the charts. He’ll release “Beachin’” to radio after the new year. Scotty McCreery’s See You Tonight gained 21% in sales over last week to move over 11k units. He’s now sold 148k to date. Cassadee Pope’s Frame By Frame moves another 10k this week to bring sales to 119k. Her lead single “Wasting All These Tears” sits at #12, the place it’ll sit until after the first of the year as the industry takes a break for Christmas/New Years holidays. Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away makes an appearance with sales holding steady for the Country icon. The album has sold 1.611 million to date while her cast soundtrack for The Sound of Music has moved 67k in two weeks. Scotty McCreery’s Christmas With Scotty has now scanned 382k to date (it’s already certified GOLD by the RIAA). Zac Brown Band’s Uncaged is close to scanning Platinum, joining the band’s two previous albums in the Platinum-plus certification levels. Thomas Rhett’s “It Goes Like This” is next and it has moved 22% more than the previous week and has now sold nearly 82k to date. Label mate Justin Moore has sold 205k copies of his third album Off The Beaten Path while Trace Adkins first Yuletide album, The King’s Gift has sold 35k in the few weeks it has been on the charts, not a bad feat for an independently-released collection of traditional Christmas carols. Finally, Kelly Clarkson’s Wrapped In Red surpassed The Duck Dynasty novelty Christmas album (really all Christmas recordings are novelty records) and has moved 578k to date, roughly 3k more than Duck The Halls. It’ll be interesting to see which albums score the best sales. *NOTE: Due to the Christmas holiday next week and New Years Day the following week, this may be our final Country Albums chart rundown for 2013. If we get the information, we’ll still find time those days to bring you, at least an abridged rundown. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

I wonder how the homophobic remarks of Phil Robertson will affect those Duck Dynasty sales. He's now been suspended from A& E because of it. Will that rally all the supporters who'll run out now and purchase the Christmas Album a la Chick Fil A.

Animated Disney soundtracks that have hit the top 10 (Non-Pixar): Cinderella - #1, 1950 Aladdin - #6, 1992 The Lion King - #1, 1994 Pocahontas - #1, 1995 Tarzan - #5, 1999 Frozen - #10, 2013 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio went top 10 on certain singles charts in 1939 and 1942, and they would be considered "soundtracks" today because they were bundled into a set of three or four 78rpm singles. Is that Billboard article wrong? www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/5840357/disneys-frozen-soundtrack-hits-top-10-on-billboard-200-chartIt says Aladdin was #1 and they didn't mention Cinderella.
