It turns out that “Beautiful” isn’t even close to Franzese’s go-to karaoke song:

Her voice sounds like it's in better shape, so that's good. I agree about her doing another "Back to Basics" type album, which is my favorite album of hers. She needs something mature and sexy.

^Agreed. I imagine whatever we end up getting next will at least be better than "Lotus." She seems to be in a much better place now with her image and her personal life. Hoping we get something a little more inspired this time around.

And I hope if she is working on the album that she is recording NOW, because her voice sounds so much healthier compared to a year or two ago. I imagine due to the pregnancy that she is not drinking, which probably explains a lot of it. She did hit a few bum notes (wouldn't have been an Xtina concert without them) @ Jazz Fest, but certain areas of her voice that surely would have gone into rasp territory were clear and powerful. I was pleasantly surprised by a lot of what she did, especially those covers. Would love to hear more of that in the future.

Anyway, even though I'm dying for another B2B type album, Christina always wants to go in such different directions with each album, that I'm not sure we'll get another album like that from her.

She's has always said old school Soul is her favorite (and it seems to be her biggest influence), so I hope I 'my wrong.
She really seemed to impress a lot of people who don't normally like her style; she needs to capitalize on that.

She needs old school Soul/heartfelt ballads and Pop with substance, but still fun (Candyman, ANOM)

DJ Premier is confirmed to be working for some tracks on the next record. I really feel like this album will be out this year.

What else is cooking?

I just did a record with Ed Sheeran. We did some cool stuff – we were just experimenting in the studio, but it came out really good – so we got that going… I'm getting into the pop world again. I've started working with a group called Rizzle Kicks, who are very popular overseas – we did some cool stuff – and then I'm starting to work on Christina Aguilera's [new] stuff.

I was actually going to ask if you'd like to do more pop, as you didn't do much after Back To Basics.

I consider myself a producer, period. I'm not just a hip hop producer – I'm a producer. It doesn't matter what you bring to me, I'm gonna apply my tastes and passion for music to it – but most of it comes from me being a DJ. The fact that I DJ, that's really where I get the best focus on how to do things, because I'm very deep-rooted in being raised on music – before rap was even in existence. Because of that, I've always been up for any challenge – or what anybody ever brings me. So when Christina approached me about working on Back To Basics, I was immediately excited about doing it because I want to show that I'm beyond hip hop – even though I'll apply a hip hop flavour to it because that's what made me my name.


What was that experience like?

She let me just do me. She didn't really give me a lot of instructions. She just pretty much told me what she was looking for. And then some of it was just experimentation. She would go, ‘Ooh, I like that, lay that down’ – and I'd play it. TheThank You record, I was playing around with a friend of mine's daughter, showing her how to scratch on the turntable. She started cutting the beat on time and I said, ‘Yo, keep that going’ – and I got on a keyboard. Christina happened to walk in and go, ‘What is that?’ I'm like, ‘Oh, we're just playing around’. She goes, ‘I like that, lay it down!’ – and we put it on tape [laughs].

Wow, that story about mixing B2B is awesome.

I actually just listened to the album in full a few days ago, and it blew me away. Every part of that record is absolute PERFECTION.

I know people like to complain about Christina for various things, but I love that she's a perfectionist and wants to make every record unique.

She got pregnant during the US leg of the tour. During the Australia leg she was clearly showing (when the DVD was filmed). Her tour was way more intensive than what she is doing now. Now she can just sing and not having to worry about choreography and prop intensive routines.
