I just realized this year will mark Breakaway's TEN year mark! I wonder if they'll do something special. I've always wanted an acoustic version of that record a la Alanis's Jagged Little Pill Re-Release. That would be a dream come true. She'll be able to promote Breakaway ten years at the same time as hopefully promoting her Xmas record again as well. This will be yet another amazing year to be a KC fan.

I was perusing reviews on the perennially sour Slant magazine and found this delightful quote from Candice Glover's album review:

That does sound really lovely, but we've got so many specialty-type albums from her--two Smoakstack Sessions, an iTunes session, a GH album, a Christmas album--and she's going to be trying to balance a separate country and pop album, that I don't expect something like that at all. In fact, I'm ready for full original albums and would prefer that's where the efforts and budgets go.

...wonder if the dual release is out the window. Or if she's just focusing on one over the other for now. Of course, she's never got an album out as scheduled, so we'll see.

I wish she would do a one-off concert (In Texas obv) and perform Breakaway in its entirety beginning to end.

We will totally get a new album coming March 2015, I'm sure she'll push the 'later this year' date back.

Im looking for a chart expert to dig up some of her radio totals for me....Do we have any updated Radio stats as far as Audience and Radio Spins?? I will post information I found on UKMIX but most of the data is 2007/2008 and I have found a few other stats over the years but was wondering if there was any updated info?
Thanks!!!

The tweet seems unsure and hopeful. My guess is that she still hasn't decided or worked out the details with the label about the album(s) release. I just hope it doesn't get pushed back, since it usually does.

It sounds to me like they're reworking the album as opposed to just releasing Stronger leftovers, which is both preferable (artistically) and not preferable (selfishly). I think that if Kelly is going back into the studio it means they are experimenting with a new sound, which is what I've wanted from her since My December. If they are in fact pursuing more neo soul, rhythmic pop/rock, I really think we could have a big era on our hands. Releasing a Stronger 2.0, however safe, is unlikely to generate a hell of a lot of excitement.

What does "rip ur favs (again)" mean? She slayed ("killed") your favorites in 2013 with Wrapped in Red (may they rest in piece), and now she'll do it again with a regular studio album.

They must have put the brakes on the country project. Having the right friends and living in Nashville isn't always enough to win over an entire fan base. Stick to the pop route. It's what got her where she is! And I'm totally down for Stronger 2.0! Just NOT with the Breakaway formula again. It proved to hurt the Greatest Hits. If People Like Us would've been released 1st, it would have SMASHED so hard (or at least I'll always believe it would've in my heart).

"People Like Us" just wasn't as epic as we like to think it was.

I have to remind y'all that SINCE U BEEN GONE was her 1st single in 90 % of the world then! Of course the album took off with that monster single and of course the single Breakaway itself got recognition after all the other hit-singles. Mr. Know It All just proves that it does NOT work worldwide. I don't wanna hear anything about her label focusing on her main targets - I'm stricly talking about the album's and the single's chart performance. People Like Us IS still epic. I've never in my life heard such an amazing instrumental in ANY other song (and hell I listen to lots of music) - I'm talking about the "oh-oh-oh we re all misfits..." that combination of instruments is amazing! and most people don't even know that the song exists... while Catch My Breath, as nice as it is, is just an electro-pop songs... a bit 80s influenced and Don't Rush is a nice souly country song But Greatest Hits should sell over 1 million copies worldwide one day so I'm fine with it

I've never heard anyone have a blasé reaction to PLU. And I've had casual Kelly fans to people who don't really care for her all react the same. I feel like it should have smashed even when released after CMB, so it's just a really baffling situation in general to me.

We've discussed this to death. The Stronger strategy DID work because it gave her a big era, her biggest since BA, solidified her presence in her strongest foreign markets, won her a Grammy, etc. And PLU, however fun, was a blatant reaction to trends that existed primarily in 2011 and had distracting similarities to her previous smash hit. Never mind the fact that it was the second single off of a Greatest Hits album, followed an era that was basically non stop Kelly for two years, and was released almost as an after thought. It seems to me like there are some paper thin excuses being made for a single that didn't even hold that much promise to begin with. I do love the song but the stars just weren't ever going to align for it. I think more than anything the song's underperformance should be a message to Kelly that she can't be complacent in her recording processes and that she must respond to radio trends in a fresh, interesting way.

No matter how I feel about Mr. Know It All, it was definitely NOT a radio trend, but it was fresh for her. After SUBG artists ran to Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Never Again was a risk... a profitable risk. MLWSWY smashed when Gaga's music was hot! The song's genre might not be something too new, but the chorus was something fresh... these long-held notes and ahhh just a fun song to listen to MKIA was another beneficial risk and after S(WDKY) artists ran to Greg Kurstin Kelly sets trends.

I'm glad her tweet mentioned her still recording, and more importantly, writing. She mentioned before that the album was essentially complete, and I was worried by the time it eventually came out that everything would be dated and stale. I've said all along I want this next album, which could be her last before a real break/last on a major label/etc., to embody all her feelings that have come along with her new life - dating, marriage, pregnancy, motherhood, etc. I wanted her to be the one writing and telling the story, and not filling the album up with your average, random songs from Rodney Jerkins or aspiring country songwriter #5. I'm not trying to bash her last two pop albums, but you can see the complacency in her recording process, as bb put it, in them, and that tweet gave me hope that the album is being reworked behind the scenes to make it right, because to me, it looked like we were going to get Stronger part two, which I'm just not interested in at all. All I want is for her to knock this last album out of the water, and with Wrapped in Red turning out so well, especially with her original compositions, I think she's on the right path. I do not have a preference as to what sound she can choose - pop, rock, R&B, country, a variety - just as long as it feels fresh and genuine, even if it takes another year to do it. [/end fan wish list]

Of course Kelly cares about the mainstream. I really am not a big fan of the way we sometimes assign her disinterest in commercial success. She is a pop star. She releases albums, releases radio-friendly singles that all sound like reactions and reflections on pop staples, she promotes on all of the big shows, etc. None of these things is a bad thing. It does not make her any less of an artist, any less of a songwriter, or any less of a performer. In fact, when she does respond to radio trends, I think it makes her a far superior recording artist because she is participating in a greater conversation of musicians and listening to what the public is interested in. To suggest that Kelly only cares about releasing music she loves and gives no thought to its commercial performance is really inaccurate. One of the things I adore about Kelly most is that she recognizes the requirements of the industry and is a dedicated businesswoman. She has her priorities in order, but she is not thoughtless.

If Kelly didn't care about the mainstream we'd have more diverse set of song structures (verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge & chorus). I'd like some instrumentals or funky verse switch-ups in her albums. But, alas, all the songs from the past two albums have been radio-bait or borderline. She has amazing taste in musicians, I'm hoping this is the album that she take the some risk, working with Miguel could contribute to that cause his writing seems out of her comfort zone.

I miss the experimenting with song structure that Kelly did on My December. Some of my favorite songs from her (Maybe, Irvine, Chivas) broke from the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus formula, and I don't understand why she hasn't been able to get one self-penned song like that on an album since. I think her songwriting has generally improved over time, with the exception of being stifled by the pop song formula. I think a little more of that interest in experimenting that we saw during My December combined with her improved ability to write strong melodies and novel life experiences could lead to some great music.

People Like Us is a good song but Catch My Breath is definitely favorite one for 1st single from GH. It's very catchy and makes me feel her autography or something. I love those songs.

I was thinking the other day how much I truly LOVE Kelly's overall body of work, but how the singles themselves don't fully reflect the best of it. "Honestly," for example, is a pretty straightforward structure, but the lyrics are different compared to what she usually sings and the melody is remarkable. YLM and LMD, on their face, are 'typical' Kelly but there seems to be more thought in both the lyrics and the vocal arrangements while still having (IMO) strong pop-friendly hooks. But then you get MKIA (eh), WDKY (still maintain that it's a SUBG rewrite, though the fact that almost no one else called it out for that speaks to how catchy the song really is on its own merits), or IFY (non-single status only weird in how obvious it was meant to be safe radio-bait). Or like, on AIEW, you had "Ready" and "I Want You," somewhat quirkier and more left of center than one would expect, and let's not even get started on the bonus tracks from that era. But instead we get the Dr. Luke song and a Katy Perry reject as the first two singles, and Ryan Tedder mucking up what should have been a smash third single with his reductive production. And then there is all the unreleased material which may or may not ever see the light of day...it's not like Kelly is lacking in the creativity department. A friend said to me something like, the general public would never expect a song like "Honestly" from Kelly, and it took a minute for that to really sink in for me, b/c I take that side of Kelly for granted. That's really my biggest issue. We can quibble about how we'd like her to be more adventurous with her song choices, and that could be a genuine point of contention just among ourselves; but the general public does not even get to hear Kelly's best stuff most of the time and I can't help but think that if she led off her next album with a song like "Honestly" it would get a really great reaction. So at this point all I ever want is for Kelly to release an album with gems like "Honestly" or "The Day We Fell Apart," and then see those gems actually be the single releases. I'm tired of her best stuff still being held back for whatever reason. This is not the most eloquent opinion but it's how I feel so...just let me be lol They must have put the brakes on the country project. Having the right friends and living in Nashville isn't always enough to win over an entire fan base. Stick to the pop route. It's what got her where she is! And I'm totally down for Stronger 2.0! If People Like Us would've been released 1st, it would have SMASHED so hard (or at least I'll always believe it would've in my heart). I know you didn't like hearing this when it was brought up earlier, but making sure Kelly had a strong foothold in the US was her label's main focus then. That is why so many of us say the strategy 'worked' - what you're arguing is not so much that the plan didn't work but that the plan itself was not an all-encompassing one. That's not an invalid point, but it does indicate that there will be times when we have to adjust our expectations of her to fit what she's actually trying to do. Part of being a Kelly fan is constantly having to make peace with someone whose priorities don't match what her fanbase really wants/believes she is capable of (i.e. ruthless world domination).
