Not bad for "You're Mine (Eternal)'s first day of school, with no deal.

I really like this song. It's breezy and great for the upcoming spring.

This is an underwhelming melange. It's as if she took a sleeping pill while listening to Slipping Away and decided to refashion it into boring drivel that goes nowhere, incorporating the piano loop from Like You'll Never See Me Again, and the artificially enhanced final note from We Belong Together. I have to say I definitely don't agree with this at all. I was going to say more, but that'll do.

If we're going for the most apples-to-apples comparison, YM seems like it would be most at home with the MOAIA era (someone mentioned "Candy Bling" before, I think). Which explains both why I love it, and in part why some others find it boring? b/c I also recall a lot of people really not being favorable to MOAIA for similar reasons - 'underwhelming,' 'boring,' etc. But I personally love that general vibe for her and think it makes perfect sense for her to pick up where she left off there. If that's the direction this era is headed, #B, TAOLG, and now this are pretty cohesive, but those who didn't like the laidback approach of MOAIA should probably brace themselves for not having much to invest in here. JMO, of course. She may surprise and have a curve ball or two in the tracklist; i just don't see a reason to expect it at this point in her career. She is still capable of producing a game-changer, but she doesn't need another one to prove anything, so she probably doesn't record with that goal in mind.
All of this is not to say that the song doesn't also remind me of some of her other songs. The mostly mellow approach to the vocals reminds me of "Dreamlover" and the drums are a bit reminiscent of TMB, even though TMB is a totally different type of song from this. WBT is the comparison I agree with the least - they're sappy sort-of-breaking-up themed midtempo ballads but if that was all it took to sound alike then 85% of pop ballads sound alike. WBT was a power ballad, with much emphasis on the 'power' part of that equation. YM isn't trying to go for that power.
Not here for the remix with Trey - it's constructed well enough but I don't like the autotuning they used on his voice in certain spots. And Trey himself just seems out of place here b/c his own voice is naturally so damn earnest, to the point of almost being harsh, and it doesn't mesh with Mariah's tone as well as I would like.

WHY is the video still not on VEVO? She must have decided she didn't like the editing or something.

I kept clicking a Vevo link last night, and it said it wouldn't be up until 7:50 tonight. Maybe they gave MTV 24 hours to be the only ones with the video.

This is easily her worst single ever. This does absolutely nothing for me and the vocals are weak. I haven't even wasted my time listening to the remix because a) I don't like remixes anyway and b) this song is just too terrible that nothing could make it better.
Everything she has released after the Emancipation era has just been WAY below par. Heck, until I read that Billboard article to check out this song, I had not even heard the 2nd single from this era and I must admit it was terrible too.

Triumphant, Loverboy or Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica) are far ahead in those sweepstakes. It's not her worst single by any means - it's just sort of there.

If don't like this song then fine.
But calling it her worst single is delusional.

This is down to #28 on Itunes already and the remix is down to #87....they really should have dropped the album with #Beautiful.

She has three months until the release. Maybe it would be wise to have people help her write three hit singles. No matter how good the material, I don't think the general public is going to embrace balladriah until she puts out an uptempo with a gigantic hook (a la "Dreamlover," "Fantasy," "Heartbreaker," "Honey.")

Although it's not half as bad as "Beautiful," I agree. There are some really pretty shots, and some pretty unflattering ones. If they had a teenage love scene or something like that interspersed with the good shots, it would've been perfect. It's not a bad video, it's just boring. The glamor stuff works when they have a month to airbrush her and shoot in multiple locations ("Don't Forget About Us," "Say Something," "I'll Be Lovin U Long Time"), but otherwise, she needs some kind of story line ("The Roof," "Honey," "It's Like That," "We Belong Together," "Touch My Body," etc.).

Bahaha! I cringed watching that video! Embarrassing! Put them titties up, Mariah!!!!
I love the song though. It's kinda paint-by-number Mariah, but I'm here for it.
And of all the people to collabo with....Trey Songz? Yuck. He ruins this. Not gonna help her at urban. She should have called Jimmy from Degrassi.

It's doing fine.
#Beautiful had a big radio deal and idol exposure yet it still fell out of the top 10.
This song will have to work its way up.
You can't expect her to smash right out of the gate when her last real radio hit was like 5 years ago.
Radio need to warm up to her again that's why she's doing all this interviewing.
I don't know why people here are so dramatic about everything.
A lot of songs smashing now fell out of the top 100.
- Lorde Team peaked at #33 then fell out of the top 100 before it even begin to rise because of the radio adds. Plus she has a huge radio hit before hand.
- Burn reached the top 8 on iTunes
Then Vanished.
- Happy was not even in the top 100 until the video was released. Then of course, the beat commercial.
- Brave hit top 10 once, then vanished.
This song already hit the top 4 on iTunes during the first day.
We don't know what will happen.

I wish I knew whether Mariah cared or not about the potential hit status of any of her current releases. Random haters popping up to declare that she should retire and/or fans stressing over the possible chart success, I can't tell if these are valid reactions b/c sometimes it seems like she cares and other times I get the opposite impression. She obviously cares about the music, but she's got the kind of career where it's perfectly acceptable for her to release new music now simply because she feels like it and not because she needs to keep up with Katy, Rihanna, or whoever. Chaka and Aretha released albums well after their prime and no one gave them grief for it or said they should quit just b/c they didn't sell a lot. Sometimes I feel like Mariah is cognizant of that and that's why she lets things get sloppy (hiring JD, TAOLG's release). On the other hand, it would be nice if she did care b/c her fans would certainly like to see her on top again; and when we get the launch that #Beautiful had and her working with current r&b artists like Miguel and Trey, that makes me think, well maybe she is still trying to do something here.
With YM I'm not sure because the release has been VERY organized which would normally indicate some caring, and goodness knows there's NO other reason for her to work with Trey other than the fact that he's urban radio bait. But IDJ didn't get her an iTunes banner, just a small box under new music and nothing at all under the r&b section. A banner would make a big difference in how she performs on iTunes right now and she has to know that, so why not pay for it? And like Jazzy said it seems something always goes wrong when she first releases any music on iTunes, making me wonder if someone at Apple really doesn't like her or if it's just the Mariah or label screwing around on their end. She also didn't get a CC deal, though I can understand if maybe they were a bit hesitant to do that again since they did that with #B and didn't get much return on the investment.
Overall I just get conflicting signals as to what Mariah actually wants out of her career right now (also making me think maybe there's an artist vs. label thing going on with different desires and expectations). So I have chosen not to worry about it much and am just happy some music that I like has managed to come out of all of this.

I tried to let this sit after a few listens, but I'm not really feeling it overall. There's just something that's missing from it. I feel the production might be the issue, it sounds too compressed, especially because they try to inject several different sounds into it but don't really let them breathe. She does sing it well as expected, but as a whole it kinda flies by and doesn't leave much of an impression. I do like the final belt at the end though. I just wish the rest of it was better done.

Angels- Lorde is a new act, and those other acts have not been in the game for 24 years. So can't really compare any of their situations to Mimi. Especially Pharrell, as he's the "it" guy right now (and "Happy" was boosted by use in ads)-0 and he's a male. Rhythmic attributed to most of the gain for today's numbers.

This might sound silly but I think her videos do her a huge disservice. I agree, she has to start putting out better videos if streaming counts that make people want to see her videos and help sustain/increase the life of her songs. I think a lot of her crappy videos stem from her trying to give her lambs "Mariah Carey" ridiculousness. Girl, I have your interviews for Mariah Carey ridiculousness, so stop it and put out a simple straightforward video that doesn't focus on which angle makes your chest look bigger or features your legs the best or having that wind machine pumped up to hurricane status to get that hair blowing.

A lot of posters here expect MAriah to "SMASH" immediately. if her song is not in top 10 forever, She's flopping. Which make no sense AT ALL. Mariah last radio hit was in 2009, you cant expect her to smash like that. I'm comparing her to these artists because they all had hits before and they still struggle somehow on iTunes before eventually picking up steam. It's not how the song is performing now. It's how it's performing weeks from now. We have to wait whether something will trigger a rise. Radio, performances, or even just time.

Knowing the chart climate, I can't imagine anyone expected Mimi to SMASH out of the gate. I mean, it did get to nearly top 10 on iTunes, which is pretty decent for an act who's been releasing music consistently for nearly a quarter century.
At the same time, a veteran act, at this point, probably won't see a dramatic chart showing down the road, in the middle of a run. It's possible the single will grow, and probably will, but no one should expect a smash-hit level of success. "#Beautiful" entered the Hot 100 at No. 24 on the Hot 100, and did grown, on its way to No. 15 Hot 100 peak.
So, the placement YM achieves in its first week won't necessarily be its peak.
