I agree. I don't like Kellie Pickler but that CMA performance was great.

Kellie is by far the most screwed over female by radio in the last 10 years or so. Some songs she recorded would have been #1 hits had one of the "other 3" women who radio loves recorded them.

Kellie is by far the most screwed over female by radio in the last 10 years or so. Some songs she recorded would have been #1 hits had one of the "other 3" women who radio loves recorded them. You could say that about almost any female artist in the last 5-10 years. If their songs had been done by Carrie, Miranda or Taylor they would have been huge. That's just the nature of the business though.

^ My problem with Kellie is that I think she hit the market a bit too early. I loved "I Wonder" as much as anyone else, and I thought some of her other songs were pretty good, but I just found her "dumb blonde" shtick grating, and her albums sorely lacking in identity. Stuff like "Best Days of Your Life" and "Don't You Know You're Beautiful" were just bland boring country-pop.
That's why I like her newer albums, because they finally have a distinct musical persona, and the "dumb blonde" side is almost nonexistant now. She finally feels like a serious artist.

Eh, she's maybe being taken more "seriously" now because of her critical praise and her naturally maturing some, but if she hadn't debuted when she did, she may not still be around to make this music. Her first six singles all did pretty well at country radio for a new female artist, she had decent album/single sales, and she was even a regular performer on awards shows, etc. I wish radio would pick her back up again, and this time latch onto her, because her music has only gotten even better than it was back then (and I personally thought the first half of her career was pretty good as well), and she can experience a true breakthrough.

I think finding a musical identity is one of the most overlooked aspects of the music business, especially country. I'm so happy Kellie has decided to take her music the direction she has with her most recent albums as evidence. I agree about some of her earlier singles being bland. It wasn't just that they were poppy, it was they lacked something that I couldn't quite pin down. But 100 Proof was a great album of a artist that knew what kind of music she wanted to do, and instead of reacting in a negative way about parting ways with a major label, she picked herself up and decided to hook on with a smaller less established label that was with her vision of the music she wanted to put out there. She didn't want to go back to the "Best Days Of Your Life" era and try to recapture her only chart success. She continued with the music that she loves and gives her a very distinctive persona, and for that she has earned a ridiculous amount of respect from me.

Random Video Of The Day:
Artist: Brad Paisley Single: "Me Neither" Writers: Brad Paisley, Chris DuBois, Frank Rogers Album: Who Needs Pictures Label: Arista Nashville Video Director: Jim Shea Year Released: February 7, 2000 Billboard Peak: #18
Brad Paisley is a 41 year old country music singer/songwriter from Glen Dale, West Virginia. His first break was as a songwriter for David Kersh's top 5 single "Another You". Arista Nashville signed Brad to a recording contract, but held off on a debut single for over a year because of the climate on country radio at that time. Radio was not taking to the newcomers said the head of the label and they did not want Brad to suffer the same fate. But they did finally release "Who Needs Pictures" (#12) in early 1999. Ironically the two songs I have mentioned "Who Needs Pictures", and "Me Neither" (Third Career Single) would be the only two times Brad would miss the top 10 in eleven years. His steak ended with the late 2011 release "Camouflage" (#14 on Mediabase). Brad wrote the song "Me Neither" with his songwriters on the way back from South Carolina to Nashville. Brad said it was the only time he had ever wrote a song start to finish in a car (Tour Bus Not with standing of course). Brad Paisley has sent 35 official singles to country radio with 27 straight top 10's and 30 overall. With 20 overall #1 singles ("Welcome To The Future", and "American Saturday Night" were mediabase only, while "Ticks", and "Online" were Billboard only #1's). He has recorded 9 studio albums, with 3 compilation albums, and a Christmas album which charted several songs including "Born On Christmas Day", "Penguin James Penguin", and "Kung Pao Buckaroo Holiday". Brad is still in my top 5 favorite artist and one of only three artist I've seen three times in concert. While I respect the risk he took with Wheelhouse (I was a huge fan of "Beat This Summer"). I hope he goes back to his albums such as "Part 2", "Time Well Wasted, "Mud On The Tires", and "5th Gear". My favorite Brad songs are "Letter To Me", "Waitin' On A Woman", "Mud On The Tires", and yes I loved "Online" :). I still am upset that "Best Thing I Had Going" was never released as a single.

Random Video Of The Day:
Artist: Miranda Lambert Single: "Dead Flowers" Writers: Miranda Lambert Album: Revolution Label: Columbia Nashville Video Director: Randee St. Nicholas Year Released: May 4, 2009 Mediabase Peak: #33 Billboard Peak: #37
Miranda Lambert is one of today's biggest country artists, male or female. She was born November 10, 1983 in Longview, Texas. She finished third on Nashville Star in 2003, and that led to her signing a recording contract with Epic Nashville. Her debut single was "Me And Charlie Talking" which peaked at #21 on Radio And Records in early 2005. Her next single "Bring Me Down" did not fair better as it peaked at #25 in mid 2005. In fact Miranda only had one top 10 hit with her first 9 singles ("Gunpowder And Lead"). "Dead Flowers" was a disappointment as it only peaked at #33 on mediabase, and many felt where would Miranda's career be heading with such low peaks for most of her singles. But her next release was the mediabase #1 "White Liar" in early 2010, and from there she never looked back. She would have 4 more #1 singles including the biggest hit of her career "The House That Built Me" in the late spring 2010. The song spent three weeks at #1 and won both CMA and ACM song of the year, and won a grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. She has also won the female vocalist of the year award from the CMA's the past four years. She has sent 18 singles to country radio with 9 top ten's ("Only Prettier" was #9 on mediabase), along with 5 #1 singles ("Mama's Broken Heart" was a mediabase only #1). She has recorded 4 studio albums along with two with the Pistol Annies. The song "Dead Flowers" was criticized for being not a good lead single from an upcoming album. The low performance was maybe proof that it wasn't the best radio song and perhaps while a very good song that "White Liar" should have lead the album off from the get go.

Ugh. I still can't believe "Dead Flowers" flopped so bad. I'm glad that radio took such an immediate liking to "White Liar" though that I didn't mind too much that they passed on that one, because it basically had no effect on her momentum at all. Still, I loved the music video for that one so much (her "look" in it is one of her best imo) and the song was great -- nice lyrics and the chorus was a great climax.

Today is Crystal Gayle's 63rd birthday. Loretta Lynn's little sister scored 44 Top 40 country songs in the 1970s and 1980s, with 18 of them going all the way to #1 (including duets with Eddie Rabbitt and Gary Morris). Four of her songs made the Top 40 portion of the Hot 100, all of them making the Top 20. Her best known hit is Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue (#1 country; #2 Hot 100; #4 AC in 1977 and her only gold single). She attended the same high school I did in Indiana, but I never met her. She had already graduated and begun her country music career before my family moved to that town. Crystal and Loretta had another sister, Peggy Sue Webb (who recorded as Peggy Sue). She wasn't nearly as successful as Loretta and Crystal, but she did score six Top 40 country songs from 1969 to 1979 (the biggest was her debut, I'm Dynamite, which peaked at #28; the others peaked in the 30s).

Random Video Of The Day:
Artist: Blake Shelton Single: "The Baby" Writers: Harley Allen, Michael White Album: The Dreamer Label: Warner Bros. Nashville Video Director: Peter Zavadil Year Released: October 28, 2002 Billboard Peak: #1 (Two Weeks) February 22 - March 8, 2003
This was a last second decision by me. I was driving home today from my usual busy first part of my day, and this song came on WYRK. Which was weird because it wasn't during a request time and it was mid day. Plus they usually don't play songs this old on their station. So I had to do this one today for the belief of fate ;). Blake Shelton is a 37 year old country singer from Ada, Oklahoma. His first single "Austin" was off Giant Records which closed right after the release, but soon got switched to Warner Brothers Nashville. The song would go on to be a 5 week #1 single, and is still played on many country stations to this day. After two top 20 singles "All Over Me (#18), and "Ol Red" (#14). "The Baby" would be the lead for the second album and go on to be a 2 week #1 single in early 2003. But Blake did not get another top 20 off the record, and after the lead for his next record barely scrapped top 40 ("When Somebody Knows You That Well"), many thought he was in risk of losing his record deal. But "Some Beach" reached #1 in early 2005, and he would have two more top 10's ("Goodbye Time", and "Nobody But Me"). But the song that propelled him into a superstar was the cover of Michael Buble's "Home". Since then every song except for one ("I'll Just Hold On") went #1. He also has become well known for a judge on The Voice, which he has produced "Danielle Bradbery", "Cassadee Pope", and "Swon Brothers". Blake has sent 26 singles to country radio. With 18 top ten's, and 15 #1 singles. He has recorded 7 studio albums with 3 EP's, 3 compilation's, and a Christmas album. "The Baby" is in my top 10 all time country songs. I was the youngest in my family, and the line "I Guess She Was Tired By The Time I Came Along" hit the nail square on the head. This song is so true for me and I was seriously taken back the first time I heard it. I think it's one of the best country songs ever written period. Blake's music has gone completely downhill IMO since "Home". With his last few singles either bad "Boys Round Here" or dull and vanilla "Doin What She Likes", and "Sure Be Cool If You Did". His early career was so good and he released great country songs to radio like "Goodbye Time", "Austin", "Ol Red", and "The Baby". But he I feel might be playing his music safe and not doing the music I feel like he should be doing. But tons of success will do that I guess.

Random Video Of The Day:
Artist: Emily West Single: "Blue Sky" Writers: Gary Burr, Emily West Album: Non - Album Single Label: Capitol Nashville Video Director: Stephen Shepherd Year Released: January 2010 Mediabase Peak: #38 Billboard Peak: #38
Emily West was born in Waterloo, Iowa with her given name Emily Nemmers on July 9, 1981. Emily's first break was landing a spot as a background vocalist on Chely Wright's Metropolitan Hotel. She signed with Capitol Nashville and released an EP in December 2007. Her debut single was "Rocks In Your Shoes" released in early 2008. The single only peaked at #39 and prompted a second single in 2009 "That Kind Of Happy" which failed to chart. "Blue Sky" was sent to radio in January 2010. The song features fellow Capitol recording artist Keith Urban on background vocals. The song was met with positive reviews, with the only downside being the dramatic direction the song takes mid way through the track and maybe was too dramatic during production. But Emily's vocals and the lyrics were very good and deserved praise. But the single lost momentum and died just as it entered the top 40. West lost her record deal soon after, but has since,self-released an album entitled I Hate You, I Love You in 2011. Emily's "Rocks In Your Shoes" I loved because of the vocal delivery and lyrics, but "Blue Sky" was a great song. Perhaps it wasn't the right choice for a single, but her vocal performance was awesome and she had immense potential that was never realized.

I hope it's ok with everyone that I gave the "Random Video of the Days" their own thread. They were really filling up the News thread, but it's a lot of great discussion as well, so the mods felt it was best for them to have their own special thread :) I wanted to separate them from news-related items, but we definitely didn't want to 'can' the discussion because it's been very popular and fun as well (good discussion all around). So I just moved all the posts from January 1 onward (pertaining to the videos) into this new thread.

I just wanted to ask this. The Band Perry's music video for their song "All Your Life" has been one of my favorite videos of the past 3 years mainly because of how "visually interesting" it is. However, for something as visual as that video, I don't really get the whole story. Does anybody have any idea of what the story line actually is?

Apparently it takes place during the "Grapes Of Wrath" era (A well known Novel). With The Band Perry playing the part of the Purveyors of Performance (A fictional traveling band). How they came up with that, with this particular song, I have no earthly idea . theboot.com/the-band-perry-all-your-life-video/

Here's a favorite of mine from the mid 1980s. Artist: Mel McDaniel Single: "Stand Up" Writers: Bruce Channel, Ricky Ray Rector, Sonny Throckmorton Album: Stand Up Label: Capitol Nashville Video Director: George Bloom Year Released: 1985 Billboard Peak: #5 Mel McDaniel had 25 Top 40 songs between 1977 and 1988, including 9 Top 10 hits, one of which made it to #1 (Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On in 1984). The title track from his album Stand Up hit #5 in 1985. The follow-up from the same album, Shoe String, peaked at #22 in 1986. He only had two more Top 40 hits after that: Stand On It (written by Bruce Springsteen; #12 in 1986) and Real Good Feel Good Song (#9 in 1988). He suffered a near fatal fall into an orchestra pit in 1996; this injury required several surgeries and ended his touring career. In 2009 he suffered a heart attack and was placed in a medically induced coma. He died March 31, 2011, about a month and a half after being diagnosed with lung cancer. Note: There's a longer version of the video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_WCV2Bv5Ys, but both the video and audio quality are worse.

Great post, sabre14 (and glad to see this get it's own thread)! I haven't had much of a chance to post recently, unfortunately, but still lurking around the random video of the day posts. For me this song hits especially hard, so when I hear it on the radio (also at the most random time's) I'll usually have to take a moment to stop, breathe, and take it all in. I was in the Army in 2005 when I got that call. It was just like as Blake sung it, "Cause your momma really needs you, and says she got to see you, she might not make it through the night." I got the earliest flight I could and flew home. Unfortunately I was too late and I never got to say goodbye, myself. Man, this is just one of those songs that I'll always tear up near the end. Almost takes the breath from you. Anyways, I also agree it was pretty much downhill after "Home." Can't think of anything from Blake's repertoire since then that will stand up against his earlier work.

Random Video Of The Day:
Artist: Pat Green Single: "Dixie Lullaby" Writers: Pat Green, Patrick Davis, Justin Pollard Album: Cannonball Label: BNA Video Director: Trey Fanjoy Year Released: October, 2006 Mediabase Peak: #24 Billboard Peak: #24
Pat Green may be a relatively unknown name for many country fans, or may just be an artist where they have to think about what songs he sings. But in Texas every country music fan knows just who he is. The 41 year old from San Antonio, Texas has been huge in his native state since 2001, but has self released albums since 1995. His first major label release was the Three Days album for Universal/Republic in 2001, with "Texas On My Mind" as the lead singe (#60). The next two off the record where "Carry On" (#35), and the title track (#36). Then in May 2003 he released the biggest single of his career "Wave On Wave" (#3). The song was off his Wave On Wave album. The only other single was "Guy Like Me"(#31). After the Lucky Ones album ("Don't Break My Heart Again" #21, and "Baby Doll" #20), he signed his first Nashville based major label deal with BNA. Cannonball would produce his last top 10 ("Feels Just Like It Should" #10), "Way Back Texas" #27, and this single. "Dixie Lullaby was the follow up in late 2006 to "Feels Just Like It Should". The song struggled up the singles chart but manged a top 25 peak. The song was met with positive reaction from most, and Pat Green said it was one of the best songs I have ever recorded. He also stated if this song is not a hit.. I just might quit... Which never happened of course. But the song was a autobiographical subject about Pat's father, and special to the singer. He put out the singles "Let Me" #12, "Country Star" #31, and "What I'm For" #28. "Country Star was one of my few guilty pleasure songs and I was pretty bummed when it flamed out so quickly. He parted ways with BNA, and switched to Sugar Hill Records, where he now is back to releasing Texas Country Music. I'm glad Pat was able to show the rest of the country what Texas already knew. That he was a great singer/songwriter. I know the music he put out on BNA was more pop sounding and mainstream, but if your Pat Green I think it's only fair to see if you can make your ultimate dream come true and take a swing at Nashville. I saw him live in 2006 up here and he was one of a few who I ever saw do this. Which was have the crowd not so into him in the beginning, but won them over by the end and had every single person standing up singing by the time he left the stage. Ever since then I've been a Pat Green fan.

Random Video Of The Day:
Artist: Carolyn Dawn Johnson Single: "I Don't Want You To Go" Writers: Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Tommy Polk Album: Room With A View Label: Arista Nashville Video Director: Lisa Mann Year Released: December 10, 2001 Billboard Peak: #7
Carolyn Dawn Johnson is a Canadian country music singer/songwriter. She was born April 30, 1971 in Grand Prairie, Alberta. She was a songwriter first and the likes of Kathy Mattea, Patty Loveless, Mindy McCready, Linda Davis, and Jo Dee Messina were just a few who recorded her songs. Her debut single was "Georgia" in 2000. The song peaked at #25. Her next single was the biggest of her career, "Complicated". It became her only top 5 hit in 2001. The song also hit #15 on the AC charts as well. "I Don't Want You To Go" peaked at #7, and was her only other top 10 single. Mindy McCready previously recorded the song for the international version of her I'm Not So Tough album. Carolyn's Room With A View album would wind up opening at #8 on the top country albums charts in 2001. She also landed a spot on the Girls Night Out Tour with Sara Evans, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, and Jamie O'Neal. Her only other charting American single from that record was "One Day Closer To You" (#24).
The single "Simple Life" was the lead for her only other American label album Dress Rehearsal. The song hit #13 in 2004. The only other single that charted was "Die Of A Broken Heart" (#52). In 2005 she parted ways with Arista. She signed with both Equity Music Group and Angeline Music (Canadian) and released a few more singles to both countries but none charted in the states ("Love And Negotiation", "Taking Back My Brave" to name two). Since leaving Arista she has recorded two more albums. One in both countries (Love And Negotiation), and another Love Rules in Canada only on Dancing Lily Music. She has won Female artist of the year at the Canadian Country Music Awards four times from 2001 to 2007, and Album of the year twice for her debut and Dress Rehearsal. She also won a Juno award for best country artist in 2002.
Seems like I heard this song all the time when I was in 6th grade and it's seems to be one of those nostalgia songs. Whenever I hear it I just think about riding my bus to or back from school, because my bus driver always had the country station on. Carolyn is a fabulous songwriter and two major label albums in the U.S is not nearly enough for what she deserved.

Tommy Shane Steiner may be the only country artist to date to completely leave the scene after scoring a #2 hit. Signed to RCA Records in 2001, he immediately scored a #2 hit with "What If She's An Angel" where it peaked in May 2002 and releasing an album "Then Came The Night". He followed with two more charted singles in 2002 ("Tell Me Where It Hurts" and "What We're Gonna Do About It" (the latter being a duet with Bridgette Wilson (now the wife of tennis player Pete Sampras) both of which peaked at #43). He was dropped by RCA Records in December 2002 and hasn't been heard from since.

Random Video Of The Day:Artist: Emily West Single: "Blue Sky" Writers: Gary Burr, Emily West Album: Non - Album Single Label: Capitol Nashville Video Director: Stephen Shepherd Year Released: January 2010 Mediabase Peak: #38 Billboard Peak: #38 Emily West was born in Waterloo, Iowa with her given name Emily Nemmers on July 9, 1981. Love this song so much, but I was let down by the music video, it was a little boring. Still I love Emily and it's a shame she didn't become huge. Her album was so good too, but most people are never going to hear it. :( I could never get into "The Baby". I'm not a big fan of that one. "Ol' Red" is one of my favorites. I also enjoy "Playboys of the Southwestern World" which I know 95% of you here hate. I love POTSW, I think it's one of his best singles. I wish he'd go back to that style as I think he'd still be getting hits with that kind of song.

I really like this song, but I like the earlier version that appeared on the EP with Emerson Hart doing the bgvs even more. They slightly reworked the song, including replacing Emerson with Keith, for the single release. She also released another EP, North Star, this past November that she worked with K.S. Rhoads on.

That was one of the strangest moves during the 2000s.

^ She did write "Life Ain't Always Beautiful" by Gary Allan in 2006. So she did have a songwriting credit top 5 single.
Eric Heatherly also vanished after the remake of "Flowers On The Wall" as well.

Random Video Of The Day:
Artist: The Greencards Single: "Time" Writers: Kym Warner, Bill Whitbeck, Carol Young Album: Weather and Water Label: Dualtone Video Director: Roger Pistole Year Released: 2005 Billboard Peak: Did Not Chart (Below Top 60)
The Greencards are a Texas Bluegrass band. They are comprised of Kym Warner, Carol Young, and Eamon McLoughlin (Tough McLoughlin has since left the band). The group now is a four member group with Carl Miner and Luke Bulla part of the band. McLoughlin is from England and Warner, and Young are from Australia. Many have praised the group for the blending of different genres of music into their bluegrass including Irish, Folk, and Rock n Roll. The groups debut album was entitled Movin On in 2003. They signed with Dualtone in 2004 and released their second album Weather and Water in June, 2005. "Time" didn't get much airplay outside of Texas, but did receive play from GAC On The Edge Of Country, along with CMT. The video was filmed at a skating rink, where a local high school class was having a get together. They were not actors, and added a real feel to the song and video.
The Greencards have recorded 6 albums all together. The album Fascination was on Sugar Hill Records, while The Brick Album, and Sweethart Of The Sun was on Darling Street Records. The groups third album Viridian was on Dualtone and produced by Jay Joyce. The track "Muddy The Duck" was nominated for a grammy as the best instrumental by a country band. It however lost to Brad Paisley's "Throttleneck". "The Crystal Merchant" off their Fascination album was also nominated for the same award, but would once again lose to Steve Wariner's "Producer Medley".
The Greencards are not really mainstream, nor is their bluegrass traditional. But their music is a unique and beautiful blend of acoustic instruments. Their Weather and Water album, along with their Viridian album are two of my favorites and it's a shame that groups like this are not more well known around the country.

Eric didn't really vanish like Cyndi or Tommy, Mercury tried to put out a second album which didn't take off, and later on he was moved to Dreamworks where a 3rd album was recorded but neither album ever came out due to the singles not getting played. He released an album on Koch Nashville a few years later and has two more independent ones as far as I know. I have the first four albums and they're really great, especially The singles released from the Dreamworks album were, "The Last Man Committed", "Sometimes It's Just Your Time", & "When A Heart Begins To Drift". TLMC charted into the top 40 while the other two didn't chart. (Not the real official video which seems to have been lost :( )
