why is that? CS and TM are experiencing continued exponential decreases while Timber is still gaining. Dark Horse is still too far behind to reach #1 for at least another 2 weeks so Timber will grab the top spot for a few days before Dark Horse takes over. I could be wrong though as you never know when a song can start flopping.

The chart date for the week ending February 1, 1964 marked the beginning of a new era. It was a new era because that was the week that the very first Beatles song topped the Hot 100. It was not an easy rise to the top. As far back as early 1963 Parlophone/EMI (the Beatles' British record label/company) had tried to get Capitol records in the US (which EMI owned) to release the Beatles' records. But Capitol refused, saying that they didn't think the Beatles "would do anything in this (US) market."   So instead EMI went to a couple of smaller labels called VeeJay and Swan and got them to release the Beatles singles throughout 1963, but not one of them made a dent on the US charts.

But after Capitol saw the kind of crowd reactions the Beatles were getting in the UK, and the type of sales they were getting, they started to change their minds. In the late fall of 1963, after hearing the Beatles' latest UK single "I Want To Hold Your Hand," they finally changed their minds and decided to release the IWTHYH single on Capitol on January 13, 1964. But America wasn't going to wait until 1964 to hear IWTHYH; On December 17, 1963 A Washington D.C. area DJ became the first DJ in the country to play an imported copy of "I Want To Hold Your Hand".  The reaction was immediate and the song quickly spread like wildfire to other radio stations across the country.

Seeing this reaction, Capitol decided to move up the release date of IWTHYH to December 26, 1963 and upped the production order from 200k copies of the 45 to one million. That one million initial pressing ended up selling out in the first two weeks as "I Want To Hold Your Hand" became the fastest selling single in the history of Capitol records, and in the recording industry up to that time. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" debuted on the Hot 100 on January 18, 1964 at #45 and took only 2 more weeks to reach the #1 spot the chart week of February 1, 1964. Beatlemania had finally hit the US, and it was only just getting started.

It's an ultra-sappy power ballad, originally released in '83. The Wikipedia on this one ist quite entertaining :)
I don't if it ever got any recurrent/gold airplay. Probably the least well-known #1 song from the eighties.
