https://www.instagram.com/p/DBJd1I4pohW As always, just some bullshit to avoid answering the question. Like we're supposed to believe THE Mariah Carey can't put out an album like that on her own. Bye!

I will FOREVER sing the praises of H8U. Another underrated masterpiece in her catalog. It's my personal favorite, and I go way back to the beginning in real time.

Mariah is really low key during this interview, at least for the first 2/3. She does get more energetic by the end.
Mariah implies new music in 2025, but also hesitates and notes people get mad when stuff doesn't come out.
I love Matt talking about the ending of "Heartbreaker."
The rant about overhead lighting is even better in context.

Usually, in these kinds of interviews (think the podcast with Questlove, or the Zane Lowe sit down for Apple Music), Mariah spills a lot of tea re: her recording process, songwriting, back catalog, career and artistry in general, but here she was hardly talkative. What a bummer. She's been pretty reserved and not in her usual more bantery/cheerful mood, which is understandable with what she's been through in recent months. Sigh. I hope she slowly but surely finds her groove back, specially as we're getting closer to the holiday season.

Oof that was rough stuff. Why is it like pulling teeth to get her to have a normal conversation?
Like you canโt even say โyes, I canโt wait to see my friend in Wickedโ? Did she answer anything at all? I donโt think she did. Kudos to the hosts (though Matt is not one of my fav podcast hosts to listen to) for keeping things flowing, well aware that Mariah wouldnโt be offering any banter.

She seemed medicated and very mellow but overall not bad interview. I miss her energetic style she was fun! Now she seems more uncomfortable, and down. Understandably so considering she lost her bf recently, mother and that lady.
She is probably in that stage of contemplating her next life moves and she should be back to Mariah soon

It's just weird because she seemed fairly energetic in the live shows that were before this interview. In this interview she reminded me a lot of how she was in Carpool Karaoke. Having said that, she did seem to get a lot more engaged in the last 20 minutes or so. The rant on overhead lighting was terrific, and she went back-and-forth more in the discussion about SUD. If she'd been that way throughout, we'd have loved it.
Anyway Westlife was mentioned in the interview, and the Mariah/Westlife duet has now hit 83 million streams on Spotify (the tweet below is a month old):
Combined with the 17+ million Spotify streams of the solo version, Mariah's "AAO" has now passed 100 million Spotify streams.
:ETA: "Obsessed" hitting new highs in 2024!!

Any word on this tour? From the looks of it, it has not sold too well. And she has no promo lined up either. I canโt recall if this is typical for the Xmas shows while still October.

What do you mean no promo? We've just been discussing her Las Culturistas appearance, and it was posted in here she's going to be on Drew Barrymore's show soon. She did an iHeartRadio interview too:

I don't know the tour stats, but I imagine things will heat up after Halloween. I'm not even thinking about Christmas atm.

Anyways, just watched the Heartbreaker love fest part of that interview and need to say that Heartbreaker >>> Fantasy and really all of her uptempos ever. I said what I said.

Yeah The Distance should have been a single, I would argue instead of WY.

Right. "With You" went top 10 at AC and Adult R&B, so it did well for her. "The Distance" could have perhaps been sent to other formats at the same time, or been a single after "WY" as you said. More so I don't understand why her team didn't at least target Adult R&B during both the MIAM and Caution eras. She could have surely gotten several top 10s at that format between those albums, which would have at least help the success of those albums a bit. At this point that's Mariah's most guaranteed format (even "Somewhat Loved" went top 10), yet few of her songs are being sent there. I don't get it. Toni Braxton has managed to do well as of late by centering that format.

Toni Braxton has managed to do well as of late by centering that format. They needed to start targeting Urban AC as far back as the Memoirs era. "H.A.T.E.U." could've been a #1 hit. The biggest mistake they made to me was not keeping the campaign going after "#Beautiful" by having "You Don't Know What to Do" as the new single and aiming for a fall 2013 release of the album. The label really needed to force their hand on Mariah there and not let her play games.

I found it hilarious that the hardcore lamb talked about all these deep cuts throughout the interview only to end the interview mixing up Music Box with Daydream (which he refers to as "Fantasy"), lmao.
As for the discussion regarding Caution, imo, this should have been the singles rollout: 1) The Distance 2) Giving Me Life 3) A No No 4) Caution *With You can released as an AC and Urban AC single somewhere along the album campaign.

Random question, but does Oh Santa sample Hey Mickey? I always thought it did, but couldn't find anything about it online or on the song's credits.

I love "Whenever You Call." It took me a bit because I think it sticks out a bit on the otherwise low key Butterfly, but it's a stellar ballad with a killer vocal. In some ways I think "WYC" fits Daydream better and "When I Saw You" fits Butterfly better ("WISY" is a bit more reined in, if only a bit, and lyrically it fits her immediate attraction to Derek Jeter along with the vivid lyrics matching the style of lyrics she used on Butterfly).

Lyrics but not the vocal cadence. She's singing WISY as if she's literally in a Daydream like most of that album.
