I like the lyrics to Butterfly, but those are not my favorite vocals from her. Has she ever sung it live? Maybe I'll like that better. I guess because of the whispery verses? That's probably what turned some people off when it was released. I adore the song, love the vocals even more, those are some of her greatest vocals EVER imo. Since you mentioned it, I'm not a fan of the whispery voice often. I love Close My Eyes vocals though. I prefer when MC uses her lower/softer tone on it. Like The Roof, those are some amazing vocals and layers and build up. It sounds buttery. But I guess what bothers me more on Butterfly's vocals is the jump from whisper to loud. It doesn't seem like a natural crescendo IMO. It throws me off a bit.

Mimi fans, do we think this year AIWFCIY can make it 17 weeks atop the Hot 100? I must say I have fallen out of love with this song as I honestly feel Mimi refuses to release a new studio album until the track breaks the record for most weeks at number-one. But I would nevertheless be supremely proud for her to be able to achieve it, not some nonsense Shabaka track or that racist Morgan. Dont get me started on OTR.

You have to take it one week at a time. Any scenario is possible for AIW and RATCT.

I always thought Butterflyβs vocals mimicked how Mariah would have an inner dialogue with herself in regard to the subject where she is battling having a gentle inner voice walking herself through it then kind of those moments of reality itβs not that way and she needs to wake up and thatβs when you get the larger belting moments. She ends it on a gentle note choosing to believe that itβs how it needs to be.

I think after Mariah left Tommy her approach to vocals was more along the lines of how she would speak on the subject either in her head or if she was having a one one one with a friend.

Ok Mariah, take me away to Christmas fantasy land, I'm in no mood for 2025 America.

I decided to get a ticket to the Mariah show in Austin. Originally, I wasn't going to go, since I have seen her holiday show in NYC at the Beacon Theatre, but I could use some joy in my life. Plus, since I bought Cigarettes After Sex tickets from Stubhub and they rescheduled their show, right before they were due to go onstage, to a day I can't attend (of course!), all StubHub would do is either make me sell them through their site or give me a voucher for another show, so...here we are! I'm excited now!

I.e. she started doing whatever she thought was cool and she started caring less. And dare I say she even got delusional about it over time.

Well, it worked at first; had she followed Tommy's wishes, she would have been like Celine - irrelevant by the early 2000s. Even if she saw a decline in the late 1990s, it ultimately did help her transition into her 2000s success. She was then ultimately rewarded in full in 2005. But yeah, Mariah has then sort of stuck to her formula in general this century. Her 1990s albums are all so varied, but a lot of her albums post- Butterfly have followed a similar formula, to varying degrees of quality and success. I guess it could be some delusion, but I see it more as stubbornness.

Oh yeah, she clearly stopped caring for her voice as well post-Tommy. She's of course admitted she's "lazy." She may have even been lazy with Tommy, but I guess she at least wasn't drinking a lot, around smoke a lot, etc. She is surely aware her voice isn't close to what it was back then, but she doesn't seem to be willing to do what she needs a lot of times (or maybe she thinks she can just get it back quickly, not sure).

LOL what is this and why is it happening NOW, of ALL times? Cause we're tired and through of the bullshit. She said no to the Rainbow Tour footage, no album in sight and it's been 4 years since she promised Someone's Ugly Daughter would be coming. Time to hold her accountable! #MARIAHMUSTPAY

She does need someone who can challenge her and who isn't afraid to say, "No." It sounds like she had that with Jermaine around TEOM, as I remember reading about him wanting her to sing a song or songs in fuller voice.
On a positive note: I'm reading this could be one of her most lucrative years ever in terms of touring, so that's great to hear.

Hmmβ¦ Iβm interested in why AIW getting the record would have anything to do with her not releasing music? I mean at most, she just wouldnβt release during the holiday. Which yeah, of course thatβs the right move. Her next album needs to be as far removed from holiday release as possible or she is indeed competing with herself. But I see no reason why it would matter outside that stretch? Just start the era in q1, regardless of when the album is finished.

Yeah, I don't see why "AIWFCIY" going for the record would have anything to do with her not releasing an album in, say, April. To answer what ObhiDonna asked, though, I don't see "AIWFCIY" getting to 17 total weeks at #1 this season. I'm not even confident it will get 1 week at #1 this season tbh. I want new music but let's give her a break she has been recording music since she was 19 she is 54 or 55 some of y'all get burned out at your job in 6 months. Yeah, she's either clearly not motivated to make new music, or she's scared of how poorly a new album might do. She has released one-off recordings since 2018 ("Fall in Love at Christmas," "Rainbows End," etc), just not an album. It should probably be noted that Janet Jackson hasn't released a new album since 2015, and Madonna hasn't released a new album since 2019. The reality as a lot of musicians age, they just aren't as creatively motivated as when they were younger.

I much preferred the medley of non-Christmas songs I saw on last year's tour. I was dancing my ass off and singing my heart out to A-No-No!

There is a Blue-Spec CD2 version of AIWFCIY that will be released as a Japanese exclusive (Nov. 27th release date). The tracklist is the same as the CD single to be released in the US + the extra bonus track of the Tokyo Dome performance. The CD also comes with two Christmas cards. Also, the cd cover art used is the same as the Merry Christmas album cover (instead of the artwork from the newer photoshoot that the US is getting). There is also a cassette tape version. What's interesting is that there is no Japanese exclusive CD version for the 30th anniversary of the album (or any Japanese exclusive version in any format as far as I know). Even when other places got no CD version of a deluxe or re-release, Japan will usually be the one place that will get a CD version. Perhaps they are choosing to focus on the single's chart performance rather than the album this time. The album did reach #1 in Japan but AIWFCIY peaked at #2.

In the U.S. I actually really wish that this season they were pushing to finally get Merry Christmas a new peak (ideally #1) instead of still pushing "AIWFCIY" so hard. We should have gotten a 30th anniversary edition of the album on all formats - vinyl, CD, and cassette. Those physical versions should have included her version of "Where Are You Christmas?" to truly entice fans to buy the physical versions. "Fall in Love at Christmas" could also have been placed on the album to add those streams to the album (every little bit helps).

Those physical versions should have included her version of "Where Are You Christmas?" to truly entice fans to buy the physical versions. "Fall in Love at Christmas" could also have been placed on the album to add those streams to the album (every little bit helps). To be fair, they are putting a fair amount of effort into trying to sell the album itself (even if the song seems to get more focus). Feel free to correct me, but I believe it is the first time the album has gotten a picture disc and a Zoetrope version, which will probably entice collectors more than another color variant would. There's also the MoFi versions, including a (super audio) CD version.
But I agree, a CD version of the 30th anniversary would have been nice. Maybe since it doesn't have any tracks that weren't already made available on CD for the 25th anniversary, she/her team didn't see a point for a CD release. Though I definitely would have appreciated a newly mastered version of the St. John The Divine concert on CD, which is why I was really hoping Japan would pull through with a CD version. She could have also easily sold the CD as a boxset with the booklet to entice people. As for "Where Are You Christmas?", next year would be the 25th anniversary of the movie. If she were to release it (I believe she's mentioned that she has some reservations about releasing her version), perhaps she thinks next year would be a more ideal time. I agree that "Fall in Love at Christmas" could have also been added to the 30th anniversary, maybe even tack on a few of the remixes on the tracklist like she did with "Joy to the World" on the 25th anniversary. What I was really hoping for, had there been a CD version, was for "Sleigh Ride" to be added with the proper outro (the one she uses at her Christmas shows). The song that isn't available on CD and the digital version ends awkwardly since it transitions into "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" (which acts as the outro).
