I don’t get ppl saying she can’t sing! I just don’t get it.
It’s clear she can and very well at that.

I think some of her issues live are how she chooses to arrange the song live. Sometimes she ruins the melody with some of her arrangements. I don’t think she has too many vocal issues these days, but a terrible arrangement can make a song’s vocal performance seem worse than it is.

So I found a bunch of PDFs with the old R&R/Mediabase charts so I looked through them and got the peaks and chart runs from each of her songs from 1990 through 2006. I'm putting them in all in a spoiler because shes so successful you would be scrolling forever: {Spoiler}{Mariah Carey R&R/Mediabase Peaks (1990-2006):} Pop
I didn't track her pop peaks since they're already listed at this link: wweb.uta.edu/faculty/gghunt/charts/mcarey.htmlRhythmic#9 – Without You* #20 – Anytime You Need A Friend #5 – Endless Love #1 – Fantasy#1 – One Sweet Day#49 – Open Arms #1 – Always Be My Baby#17 – Forever #39 – Underneath the Stars #1 – Honey #8 – Butterfly #13 – Breakdown #7 – My All #17 – Sweetheart #31 – When You Believe #7 – I Still Believe #2 – Heartbreaker #8 – Thank God I Found You #40 – Crybaby #19 – Loverboy #50 – Don’t Stop (Funkin’ 4 Jamaica) #43 – Boy (I Need You) #3 – I Know What You Want #27 – U Make Me Wanna #9 – It’s Like That #1 – We Belong Together#1 – Shake It Off#1 – Don’t Forget About Us#48 – So Lonely #26 – Say Somethin’ *Peaked prior to the creation of the chart. I wonder if some of her vocal issues over the past 10 or so years (E=MC2 on) were also due to nerves. I'm sure she felt a lot of pressure to hit the right notes and sing the songs exactly like the studio version, which certainly doesn't help. She seems more comfortable improvising now. E=MC2 vocal issues were probably lifestyle/stress related (she seemed to party it up more then, plus the pressure of following up TEOM).
What does not make sense to me is how Mariah hit another vocal peak in 2016 during the SSFT in the middle of the Stella era. I think some here even said it was the best she sounded since 1996 (and I couldn't disagree). I do like that she's more consistent now though.

I honestly feel her consistency lately is due to her getting a hold of her bipolar disorder. She seems more confident as evident by her Caution era, interviews and how relaxed she is in public. Even all the singing social media clips is a sign of her embracing herself. Because she is taking care of her mental health she might be sleeping better and drinking better be overall less stressed.

Off topic, but I feel at home in the Mariah thread and I’m happy to be in a company amongst the lambily. Coming here definitely helps me mentally.

Not sure if anyone else is reading it, but I'm following the Stereogum column of all the #1 singles in history. It is up to late 1980. In 1980, Diana Ross had a huge comeback by doing an entire album with Chic as her backing band. I think they wrote the whole thing too and she just sang it. Barbara Streisand did a very similar thing with the Bee Gees and had a huge hit album with several hit singles.
It got me to thinking about Mariah. If she were to do something in that lane (of course with the exception of her cowriting), who would she do it with? Maybe Mark Ronson? That's what popped into my mind...or something like collaborating with Bruno Mars and his writing team. I realize it's not 1980, but I think it's completely possible for Mariah to have another true hit album. She's built a lot of goodwill in a subtle way from Caution on, with all her social media presence, AIWFC being bigger than ever and hitting #1, and of course her recent performance from home which was VERY well received. I don't know. I have lots of time to think and it seems totally possible to me, in a time when people are definitely in need of familiarity and comfort.

I don't see Mariah turning over the entire creative process to someone else, because she's far more involved in the writing of her work than Barbra or Diana were. She basically already got pretty close to doing this with The-Dream on Memoirs. Before that album was conceptualized, I thought them doing an entire album together would be a good idea since they had similar influences and I could hear a lot of similarities between their songwriting. If she were going to do it today, I'd say Bruno Mars is the closest to giving me that feeling now.

I like MOAIA, but it’s also a bit watered down from Dream’s albums. Mariah is of course going to temper whomever she works with. At any rate, Louis Bell would be interesting. He’s worked on most of Post Malone’s big hits and co-wrote “Havana” and “It Ain’t Me.” He has a melodic style I think would parallel Mariah.

Random but I need a Charmbracelet tour DVD asap! That was a TOUR! She sounded better than The Administration of Mimi tour and was so playful too.

I mean, Mariah’s in lockdown by herself for a while. How would y’all feel if she dropped an ep of music she wrote/produced all by herself while she’s quarantined? Bc I would kiiiiii forever

She would do her Mariah thing, but work with sort of a backing band/Bruno Mars type team for the whole thing. I think that would yield something much different than Memoirs with The Dream. Also it would be amazing if she did an EP all on her own and released it.

Wow, that "surviiiiive" at 2:45-2:46 is amazing! I don't hear her sing it that way live often, so it's nice to know she can still hit it! The whole performance was terrific.
