Honestly, she doesn’t seem to dress for comfort or movement on stage these days.

I do think it’s related to her confidence in her voice and the stage fright that must have only got worse since her voice became noticeably unreliable. Even now as her voice is in good shape, it still appears like it takes a lot more work to control it compared to early Mariah - so to me, it always seems like all of her focus and energy is spent on controlling the voice and the nerves, which leaves little room to relax and just move!
I also think her insecurities with her appearance as she gets older plays a part. It’s like she gets put in one place with her make up and hair perfected, with the right lighting and angles, and then is to self-conscious to move from that spot.
All of these issues seem heightened in TV performances especially, compared to shows for her fans.

Lately, it drives me crazy the number of other things she will focus on during a song rather than actually sing. I’m like cool your kids. Can we get back to the song? Yeah those are nice shoes. Can we get back to the song? The lighting is bleak well girl pay that light bill because you run it.

To me, her live performances these days (especially on tv/award shows) just always look worse because you can see she is so uncomfortable. Whenever she is doing a high note or a belt her face looks very uncomfortable like it actually physically hurts, and that plays a large role. Regular people will see that and think she didn't do that good. If you see someone smiling and having fun during a performance versus just standing there looking scared obviously it impacts how you perceive their performance.
Tbh, I'd rather she just stopped doing televised performances in general. She is past the point of still having to prove herself out there, and it only usually comes with some of the standard negativity of 'well she's not like used to be anymore' from regulars. Really that's how it gets to be with every pop performer when they reach that stage in their career, just look at Madonna's recent live performances reception the past few years. Not to mention it could always just go wrong and that would set her image back once again... just honestly more trouble these days. It is what it is.
I also think she kinda tours so much these days. Prior to COVID, she was announcing either a tour or residency each year, on top of the annual Christmas shows. She really doesn't change setlists much and ofcourse she doesn't give stage energy that much, so I also kind of question why she pushes herself to tour so much.

Yeah in a general sense there isn't much to be gained from live performances for TV. They have less and less effect on sales, and at this point they are a real risk because she gets scrutinized for every little thing. Apart from performances that honor her legacy and are in a more controlled environment, I agree there is no real need for them. Her residency and general touring have been helpful, and "AIWFCIY" does what it does without any TV promotion.

I agree but I saw growth from her finding her comfortable stage during the Caution era. From 2013-wheenever she dropped that hoe she got better and looked somewhat enjoying herself again. This has been her longest most consistent vocal since her prime

I've noticed this too and completely agree. Some of her performances in the past couple of years have been the best she's sounded in almost 20 years in my opinion, but it's more noticeable with the video off. She just doesn't look as confident performing anymore, and it's easy for that to influence the way her vocals are perceived.

I forgot all about how she used to do this. The 14 year old dating a 31 year old question...

I guess she is no longer performing for Good Morning America. She is not on the new clip of scheduled performers

It's funny but watching old live performances from Mariah 1990-2006 she had stage presence. even if she was nervous she didnt look it. She commanded the stage with her presence. I dont think I've noticed the lack of presence until she had her babies era and beyond (actually when she lost all that weight for E=mc2). Even her earlier day she swayed and ran and moved around with the music. IMO her Caution era live performances saw a bit of a return of her confidence — specifically WY on GMA and The Distance on Fallon. She did her classic stand and sing with 1 knee bent looking flawless.

I’m ready. I’ve been ready. Hope she, Daniel Moore and Jermash have completed a whole EP to go with the book. 😎

Now that I see the results from Caution, I want her to continue working with new producers. Caution was a nice addition to her catalog, and it was refreshing to see 30 years into her career.

I kinda feel like Mariah would say she was "working on new music" whenever she was publicly asked what she was up to, even if she wasn't...

She has had plenty of time on her hands, so I feel like it is a given. I think after quarantine we will be inundated with new music.

Am I the only one who wants Mariah to have a “We Are The World” moment? She’s one of few legends alive who could write and spearhead a song like that, and be able to get anyone else on earth she wants to join in on it w her. Beyoncé, Kelly, Ariana — lets do it!

I kinda feel like Mariah would say she was "working on new music" whenever she was publicly asked what she was up to, even if she wasn't... Yeah, I know what you mean (on the press release for The Elusive Chanteuse Show she said "I can't stop writing songs so don't be shocked if you get a surprise new song on your stop" ...and yet never debuted anything new throughout that tour ), however it's not like she's not being honest here; she posted on her anniversary a photo of her actually recording a new song, plus JD or B. Cox (I forget who it was) confirmed on twitter they've written new stuff together. ETA: It was Johnta Austin. He said they were going to start writing new music soon.

I'm sure Mariah really never turns off "working on music" mode. When you're so prolific and so involved in the songwriting process, it's not really something you turn on and off.. but it also doesn't necessary mean she's working on a new album.
Miles Davis did an interview toward the end of his life where he said he never stopped hearing music and that music was playing in his head at all times. I imagine it's the same for Mariah.. when you're a songwriter and music is such an integral part of you.. there are always bits and pieces of new music coming to you.

She even said it on her Fuse interview sometimes she has songs like "Close My Eyes" where she wrote little bits of it over 4 years before she completed it. I'm glad she writing stuff during the pandemic cause it's going to have a different energy and make her explore different things. If anything all this is probably making her love music more than she already clearly did.
