I'm sure Mariah doesn't even know who she is. What is she supposed to say when people ask her, an artist trying to promote new material, about a "new" version of herself? "Thank god there's a new me, I'm so over anyway." She wished her luck and brushed off the comparison.
Everything about Ariana, right down to the awkward stage presence, screams post-divorce Mariah. The only way she could come off as more like her is if she vamped up her image to be a sex symbol. So her claiming there's no influence just makes her look like she has a problem with Mariah.

Why can't Mariah re-learn how to be humble? Fans in here would not agree but that is understandable because you are blinded with the facts, but Mariah's ego is just too much that it is causing her a lot of angry people.
Ariana had nothing but compliments to her and can't Mariah at least say something positive to the girl? Don't act like as if you are the biggest thing on the planet right now because you are far from it.
I am not even an Ariana fan and honestly dont find her special at all, even vocally.
I now believe Nicki Minaj with all the insecurities this woman has. Her legendary status is tainted negatively and she will be looked as a joke if she continues this on. Her iTunes performance reflects how little interest the public has in her so add that to your attitude and you are just on the way down, lower than you've ever been during Glitter area.
Mariah, learn that word humility

Plus Ariana was brushing off the Mariah comparisons long before Mariah was being asked about Ariana. Mariah wasn't asked about Ariana until last week if I recall correctly (and Mariah's comment was that she wishes her luck and longevity in the industry). Ariana was brushing off Mariah comparisons over the fall. Her team seems like they're trying hard to stop everyone from calling her a Mariah wannabe. Also.. how rich.

^Exactly. Mariah never said anything negative or shady about her.
I understand Ariana is trying to get away from the comparisons but to say she or her album wasn't influenced by Mariah is plain ridiculous.

Can someone link me to this supposed Ariana shade that Mariah cast? I've tried to keep up with her this era but I've admittedly not been able to see/read everything, and this is the one thing that I keep periodically see coming up as a debate.
Either way, Ariana is either full of s**t or woefully delusional and that is just in reference to her thinking she bears any similarity to Beyonce or Madonna. Regarding Mariah, it's possible that Ariana didn't grow up on Mariah, but her team has modeled her in Mariah's image while Ariana herself doesn't really 'get' it. I'd be surprised a bit if this is true, but it's not entirely implausible.
On Mariah's part, I remember during MOAIA someone asked Mariah if she had any favorite up and coming artists (general question, not asked about anyone specifically) and she basically cast the widest shade net ever by saying that she isn't really able to keep track of who to watch b/c people are here today and gone tomorrow. Dismissed damn near the entire new generation of artists in one fell swoop lol. Sometimes "I don't know her" is intended as shade, and sometimes "I don't know her" means...that she really doesn't know her! I just get the feeling that if there is any shade to be detected, it's not about Ariana specifically. More likely Mariah just isn't enamored with current pop music these days and thus can't be bothered to actively check out new artists much anymore.

I'm sure Ariana is irritated with being asked and vice versa.

If Mariah's comment about wishing her "the best of luck" was shade, then Mariah throws the same shade at everyone whose name is not Patti, Aretha, or Stevie. Mariah has never been one to go off on tangents about or gush about other artists. She doesn't comment on other artists period, for the most part. The few times she's made obvious shady comments about other acts, it was acts who openly bashed her prior. She doesn't comment on politics. She doesn't comment on peoples' personal lives. If people want to read into all of that and, that's fine, but it really could be just that. Reading too much into it. It's like people assuming Aretha was shading Mariah at the BET Awards because Aretha said some younger acts go out and show too much skin.

Mariah, learn that word humility I think Mariah is quite a humble person. I think the word for Mariah at the moment is ridiculous. She gets lost in this notion of how people perceive her, and she feels if she doesn't give people "the perception Mariah" then we will be disappointed. I think she needs to realize that we don't want Jessica Rabbit/cartoon antics 24//7. Sometimes just a little goes a long way. If I want to watch cartoons, I will tune into Cartoon Network. I don't need her for that.

I've been wondering lately about Mariah's falsetto. It's there a bit in You're Mine. But not much. And was there a little in #Beautiful. She is using it less and less. I think she's losing it quickly. (Especially in live performances) I, however, am somewhat excited at the thought of an album full of full-voiced songs.

Eh, I saw a youtube video of Ariana and she was talking about influences and I quote ''For me, Mariah and Whitney just about cover it for my influences'' not sure why some of you say she is trying to get away from the comparisons

Oh, it was from the Breakfast Club interview! I haven't had a chance to listen to that yet. But my understanding was that it was a lighthearted interview, if anything what I got out of it was that she cared more about joking that she's still young than she did about shading Ariana. So yeah, I agree with you that it isn't that serious at all. Eh, I saw a youtube video of Ariana and she was talking about influences and I quote ''For me, Mariah and Whitney just about cover it for my influences'' not sure why some of you say she is trying to get away from the comparisons There have been times when Ariana was asked about it and she'll say she's flattered but doesn't really see the comparison; that seems to be a more recent thing (don't know how old the youtube video is). I'm guessing that her team was fine with it at first but now want to get far away from it b/c being known as the 'baby Mariah' is hindering Ariana's chances of developing her own identity more than helping.

Well Mariah acts shady when asked about Ariana, so now that it's flipped some want to get panties in a bunch. lol she never ever shaded Ariana but even if she did it would still be less offensive than those acts who flat out insult many artists over the years.

Ariana was and is so obviously influenced, and heavily at that, by Mariah. Her music and vocal stylings so clearly reflect this. Even if she truly believes this isn't the case, it doesn't change the obvious. When an artist grows up admiring/listening to an artist closely they will unintentionally (even unknowingly) pick up traces of his or her vocal stylings/mannerisms and musical taste. I'm immediately reminded of artists on various singing competitions who immulate Whitney's "I Will Always Love You" with her exact vocal inflections/tone and maintain they don't hear the similarities.

She really probably should have started this era with an uptempo/club banger. Something that could have given this era some energy. You're Mine while nice is like one big morphine drip.

You've completely hit the issue I have with this era at this point - it needs more energy. My interest and hype for this album is pretty much zapped; I feel like I would towards the end of an era when the decent songs have already been released as singles and things are slowing down. It's been nearly two years now since the 'Summer 2012' promotion began and I first started feeling excited for the album. I'm not sure how I'm feeling about the album today, two years on - but it definitely isn't excitement. Personally, I think once Mariah had injured her shoulder, she should have used it as a reason to disappear for a while, taken her time to recover and made us miss her. She could have finished the album in secret and hit us hard with a lead single to catch our attention and an album that was ready to launch....with no countdowns! Or countdown to countdowns.

Love that the interviewer mentioned "Triumphant"- that track will keep on living, is staying on its toes, getting off the ropes and not letting anyone or anything count it out. :)

It's really unfair that 15 years later, even after TEOM, she STILL gets no real acclaim for writing and producing all her material. Like that should really be part of her billing when people talk about her legacy but it's still something that she has to bring up herself. That must be so frustrating.

I've seen it mentioned that she's a co-writer/-producer of her material when she's written about. Maybe her pointing it out so much could be part of the insecurities that she has?

Other people brag they are great dancers, Mariah just wants to point out she's a great producer and songwriter. Anyone can be a great dancer but not everyone can be a great producer singer and songwriter.

It's probably extremely annoying that stereotyping leads the public to make conclusions about what she contributes to her music. She gets lumped in with other "divas" from the 80s/90s who were nowhere near as involved in crafting nearly all of their biggest hits. I've seen articles lump her in with Whitney and Celine as simply being a vessel for songwriters' and producers' material.

But Mimi doesn't say she's a "great" producer/songwriter (doing so wouldn't come off all that modest, now would it?), just that she's heavily involved in the process. Who would even brag that they're great dancers, or writers/producers)? Besides Kanye West, that is.

She has penned classic songs and she's not given enough credit for it. She's just not some bimbo with big tits singing on stage.

Chris Brown also announced his "X" album release date for 5/5. Lil Wayne previously announced that date. I'm thinking Mariah's release will be out that Monday too, a day earlier.

Maybe she should just pretend she can play the piano (tho I know that she actually can play it) when she's performing. I can guarantee you that it would give her automatic songwriting creds. Plus, it would be better than the nonsense she's doing on stage these days.
