I may have already told this story, but I was in 6th grade during the Rainbow era, and I had the CD-Single insert covers for "Heartbreaker" and "Thank God I Found You" tucked behind the clear plastic cover of my binder (and the "I Still Believe" cover). The assistant principal MR. FLETCHER saw my binder during lunch and made this huge scene. He absolutely HUMILIATED me and made me get up in front of everyone and go to the trash can to rip them up because apparently it was pornography. I was f**king devastated and still think about it to this day, why couldn't they have just been confiscated to the office and given back after school? Anyways, I will forever associate that with TGIFY and it still makes me angry to this day. Hopefully he's no longer a closeted Republic**t and is living a better less angry life somewhere. edit: I still really like TGIFY, but I don't listen to it that often. I definitely listen to the remix more. I'm now getting mad over an incident that didn't even happen because I remember 6th grade me and she and Mr. Fletcher would have suspended me for refusing to rip up my own property and then fighting him if he tried to take it. I wasn't a violent child, I swear. I was just...very, very Cynthia. Cussing people out with no regrets. And things like this just affirm that I haven't grown up one bit because I'm ready to find Mr. Fletcher and whoop his ass right now and make him reimburse you after I've done it!

Honey, I was a good kid up until then, that was a defining moment for me. In middle school I broke out of my shell and had my Good Girl Gone Bad era and then high school was a dark and rebellious Rated R mood. I honestly felt that when Mariah said they called her Mirage at school, that was me too, the only difference was I wasn't writing number one hits in my spare time, I just had no chill or time for authority and Indiana republican educators!

Mr. Jay D83 had a teacher slam his hand on my desk because I had finished my work and laid my head down while everybody else was still working. I got up, called him a funky breath bastard, left the classroom, and slammed the door so hard it cracked the glass. Yeah me and Mr. Fletcher would've went to fisticuffs. Them teachers knew not to fuck with me and my divas. That was an especially shitty thing to do.

Off topic and many pages ago, but I now think I'll let Mariah off the hook a bit for some of her Caution shade. With her current place in the industry and after just reading the great reaction of the "WBT (Late Night Valentine's Mix)" on a different forum (and other general comments on the forum), it seems smarter to go for a more throwback sound than a more trendy, edgy one. At first I thought she was just being stubborn about Caution, but I think her instincts, if the new WBT mix is any indication, are on target. It lets her voice shine through more while still staying comfortably in her range, and she hasn't really revisited the sound much since TEOM. I still love Caution, but now I'm OK if she doesn't make another album in that exact vein.
Regarding Rainbow, that era was the first time I started to take notice of her, although I didn't really get out of my Country music bubble until 2004/2005 (I knew of the big divas but the 2004/2005 period was when I really got into them and bought all their CDs). Rainbow seems to have laid the foundation for the wonderful social media presence she has today. I can't imagine a pre-Rainbow Mariah connecting with another generation of fans the way she has done since.

The ensemble, the hair, the make-up, the vocals... *chef's kiss* Ugh. Her cover of this is criminally underrated. IMO It's one of her best covers. I discovered the song through her and still prefer hers to the original. I remember I watched her performance of this from Madison Square Garden I think like a million times and was just obsessed. The acapella intro, the flawless vocals, the buttery delivery...the song absolutely plays to all her strengths! Thanks for sharing!

A little late to the conversation, but TGIY is great in the context of the album. Having Petals being followed by Rainbow (Interlude), and then TGIY was a great sequencing choice.

What are some of her essential songs? If Mariah's music is not usually to your taste, but you like 8th Grade, I recommend getting Caution the album and start from there. Still one of the best albums of her career, IMO.

What are some of her essential songs? If you like 8th Grade then get the Caution album. It's great! Also Underneath the Stars, Fourth of July, Breakdown and the Roof. You'll learn a lot about her just from those four songs. I also recommend anything produced by Walter A.

Oh I do like a few songs by her, such as Shake It Off, Don't Forget About Us, I'll Be Loving U A Long Time, Obsessed, and some of her earlier hits like Fantasy and Baby, but not enough of her work to consider her an artist I would actively seek out. Mariah is almost a decade older than even my mum, so I have always put her in the category of 'mom music', but upon hearing Eighth Grade my views definitely changed. I will definitely check out both albums that you recommended.

What are some of her essential songs? Since you like "8th Grade," you'd probably like some songs from the Butterfly album. You might also like the mid-uptempo songs from E=MC2 (tracks 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8) since they have a "cool" vibe. Mariah's Greatest Hits is also a good place to start - that's how I first got into her music. Two of the most immediate songs in that collection (and in her entire catalog), at least for me, are "Fantasy" and "Heartbreaker."
