One of the things that made me ask about the Christmas Mariah and compared to Bublé's album earlier today was when I saw the list of albums that recently reached #1 on the Top Holiday Albums chart from Billboard. It wasn't to say one was better than the other. Being Mariah the queen of xmas, I thought I was going to see her album all over this list. I was wrong and I was surprised. It was Bublé all over. This afternoon I did see a full top ten of I believe 12/16 and saw Mariah on #3. So she IS up there commercially currently. I had never checked the Holiday chart before. The different explanations you gave about the album, its sales, reputation and history were very informative too. I really didn't know. Thanks If you’re just comparing MC to Bublé then yes you’ll see Mariah trialing him. But there are very few other Christmas that regularly sell more than she does this time of year. You can just see in how Merry Christmas seems to get another million in certifications every two or three years. Originally, it was like 4-times platinum in the 90s. It’s since more than doubled its certification since, with most of that coming the last few years. It is an albums with LEGS, dahhling. And soon Mariah will be just the third woman with 3 diamond albums because of it |

It's hard to know the discrepancy between the shipping totals and sales totals at that time because the debut was the #1 album in April of 1991 so there would have been a lot of copies available in stores in anticipation of demand (i.e. the shipping figure would be a fair amount higher than its sales total). As ryang said, Billboard started using Soundscan in May 1991, but it started tracking sales before then (March 1991) so I don't know if that 4.9 million total is from when Billboard started using it, or from when Soundscan first started. That's a potentially big question because that time frame is literally when the debut was at #1 so 1-2 months of sales data would be a huge total. Either way it had like like 30 weeks in the top 10 before Soundscan started (including the 1990 holiday season), so I think 3-4 million in sales pre-Soundscan is very likely. Keep in mind Liron tweeted relatively recently (about a year ago?) that neither the debut or Merry Christmas were near Diamond, so there's that too. If that 9 million cert in 1999 was basically right around when it hit 9 million, I can see where it hasn't 'sold' 1 million since then. Physical sales and even club sales for the debut wouldn't have been high in the past 25 years as the GH would have neutered them. Plus as I've said its streaming has been poor. On another topic, this is nice to see: I still hold out hope either Ariana or Kelly will have Mariah do a vocal arrangement on one of their songs. I’d guess it’s at 9.6 million SPS. It will make it's way back to #1 every year at least for a week unless there is some huge non-Christmas song that is dominating at that time. People keep waiting for Billboard to make rule changes for charting Christmas songs, but here we are going into 2024 and that doesn't look likely any time soon. Actually RATCT hitting #1 might help Billboard delay contemplating any changes for now. I would like to see other songs like LC and JBR squeeze in a week or two in the future. But that is only after AIW breaks the record for weeks at #1.  Everyone(including the haters) knows that this is the biggest Christmas song in the world in at least the last 20 years. |

I think this song will pose an interesting question: Are they going to give Song of the Decade to a Christmas song? The metrics of this song support it for sure as the lead candidate.

I was randomly just looking at some media base numbers and AIW will pass I Will Always Love You to be the biggest hit ever by a female artist. (Maybe by next week?)
Still a ways to go to catch Blinding Lights, but with six chart seasons remaining, it’s a good chance it’s the biggest song of the decade.

Mariah is currently the 19th top artist on Spotify with over 63M monthly listeners…the fastest it’s ever reached this number!  This young MC had no idea… Mariah has now crossed 70M monthly listeners! The fastest she’s ever done this. And it’s only Dec 16th. Her peak was last year at 74.5M.  |

I'm glad the very old Brenda Lee had her moment in the sun and the handful of stans who did all that YIPPEE and YAP online had a glorious Christmas before our father says " it's time" but all is right with the world the Mother is back at #1 I believe this week.
I love Ratchet it's a great Xmas 🎄 song but we all know there is only one UBIQUITOUS song of Christmas.

What a fantastic Christmas tour, I'll never forget the show I got to share with my sister in Chicago. My first Christmas show, and my sister's first Mimi concert, and dem vocals! Such a perfect Christmas gift.  She looks more confident and she looks like she's ready for a fucking ERA dahhling, but lets get through the holidays first and enjoy her domination. |

I think this will be the last week Mariah has a shot at No. 1. I think Brenda re-takes it for the tracking week beginning on Dec. 22 because Mariah's radio and sales leads won't be as significant since those metrics will fall for the final three days of the tracking week. |

For instance, end of day on 12/26/2022, Mariah was still #1 on iTunes whereas Brenda was #21. |
