www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.27864/title.hip-hop-album-sales-week-ending-3-9-2014Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 3/9/2014 by Andres Tardio posted March 12, 2014 Rick Ross's "Mastermind" and Pharrell's "G I R L" appear as the top albums on this week's chart with ScHoolboy Q's "Oxymoron" dropping from last week's #1 position. This week, Rick Ross and Pharrell hit the top of the Billboard Top 200 albums chart with Mastermind and G I R L, respectively. The two albums, which have been anticipated by many of the artists' fans, make their first week impressions with the #1 and #2 slots. Meanwhile, ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron takes a drop in sales in its second week, with the Top Dawg Ent. rapper's sales figures decreasing by 78 percent. Rick Ross's Mastermind Strikes At #1 Rick Ross's Mastermind appears as the #1 album on this week's chart. The project sold 179,215 copies its first week of availability. Recently, the album earned a 3 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "There isn’t anything really compelling about Rick Ross’s fictional tale anymore," HipHopDX said of the album. "It has become stale. There is no real wiggle room for his kingpin fallacy. There’s only one angle of interest left to explore: the truth. 'The truth will set you free, son. The truth will set you free,' executive producer Sean 'Diddy' Combs shouts smugly on 'Nothing,' assumedly at opposing rappers pretending to be something they’re not. How ironic. Ross could’ve used that kind of advice himself years ago. Perhaps he’ll take heed before the next mastering." Pharrell Enters Charts At #2 With G I R L Pharrell's G I R L enters the chart this week at #2. The project sold 112,534 units in its first week of availability. The disc, which features the hit single "Happy," earned a 3.5 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "While G I R L is too surface-level at times, it hits the target it’s aimed for. Pharrell wants summertime airplay, and any of these songs could survive on the radio. It’s also a nice tribute to feminine vigor, adding another notch to Pharrell’s ever-growing list of achievements. He has plenty to be happy about these days." ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron Drops To #8 ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron appears as the #8 album on this week's chart. In its second week, the album sold 30,168 copies, a 78 percent decrease from last week's 138,630 units sold. Overall, Oxymoron has sold 169,118 copies. Yesterday (March 11), ScHoolboy Q spoke about his current deal with Aftermath Entertainment/Top Dawg Ent. “I already did wrong by signing a rap contract,” ScHoolboy Q said. “I’m not talking about TDE, but how we ventured off with the majors. I wish we would have still stayed indie. I don’t care about being on like 100 radios or s**t like that. I love Interscope, but I wish I could have just stayed with TDE.” Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 3/9/2014 #1. Rick Ross - Mastermind - 179,000 (179,000) #2. Pharrell - G I R L - 113,00 (113,000) #8. ScHoolboy Q - Oxymoron - 30,000 (169,000) #19. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 2 - 15,000 (1,990,000) #33. www.billboard.com/articles/news/5930454/rick-ross-rules-with-fifth-no-1-album-on-billboard-200Rick Ross Rules With Fifth No. 1 Album On Billboard 200 By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | March 12, 2014 Meanwhile, Pharrell Williams' second solo album starts at No. 2, and Lea Michele scores a Top 5 debut. Rapper Rick Ross collects his fifth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, as "Mastermind" arrives atop the list. The set sold 179,000 copies in the week ending March 9, according to Nielsen SoundScan. While it starts with slightly fewer sales than his last album — 2012's "God Forgives, I Don't" launched at No. 1 with 218,000 — the first-week sales for "Mastermind" are about on par with Ross' usual debut frames. "God Forgives" is Ross' best sales week ever, while his five other major-label releases have bowed with a start between 158,000 and 198,000. All six of Ross' albums released through a major label have reached the top two positions on the chart, with only 2010's "Teflon Don" missing the No. 1 slot. Among all rap acts, Ross joins just a handful of artists that have notched five No. 1 albums. DMX and 2Pac also have five No. 1s, while Nas and Kanye West each have six. Eminem has seven, and Jay Z leads with 13. Debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 is Pharrell Williams' second album, "G I R L." The singer-rapper-producer’s new set sold a larger-than-expected 112,000 in its first week. The album's lead single, the inescapable "Happy," hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 three weeks ago. One day before the release of "G I R L" on Monday, March 3, Williams performed "Happy" on the Academy Awards, where it was nominated for best original song. While the cut didn't win the trophy for Williams ("Let It Go" from "Frozen" took the honor), the global exposure certainly didn't hurt him. The decision to release "G I R L" on an off-cycle Monday (bucking the trend of normally releasing albums on a Tuesday) motivated the rest of the industry's major new releases last week to move to Monday as well. That jump mirrors what has happened in the past whenever a significant artist (say, Justin Timberlake last year with "The 20/20 Experience, 2 of 2") opts to release an album on Monday instead of Tuesday. The "Frozen" soundtrack, fresh off its Academy Award win for "Let It Go," is pushed down 2-3 on the Billboard 200, but gains by 9% in sales (100,000 for the week). The album has now sold 1.3 million to date, and has sold 994,000 copies in 2014. Next week it will certainly become the first album to surpass 1 million this year. Lea Michele of Fox TV's "Glee" arrives at No. 4 with her debut album, "Louder." It sold 60,000 copies in its first week. The Emmy Award-nominated actress has visited the Billboard charts previously as a member of the "Glee" ensemble and as part of the cast of the Broadway musical "Spring Awakening." The "Glee" cast has notched 22 albums on the Billboard 200, with three of them hitting No. 1. Country group Eli Young Band is the fourth (of five) debuts in the top 10 this week, as the act's fifth album, "10,000 Towns," enters at No. 5 with 36,000. It’s the best sales weekand highest chart position for the act, which previously topped out at No. 6 in 2011 with "Life at Best" (35,000). Beck's "Morning Phase" slips 3-6 in its second week with 33,000 (down 62%), and Lorde's "Pure Heroine" jumps 11-7 with 31,000 (up 5%). Last week's No. 1, ScHoolboy Q's "Oxymoron," falls to No. 8 with 30,000 (down 78%). Eric Church's "The Outsiders" dips 7-9 with a little more than 30,000 (down 29%). Ashanti rounds out the top 10, as "Braveheart" — her first album since 2008 — arrives at No. 10 with 28,000. Released on the singer's own label, Written Entertainment, it is distributed by eOne Music. (The set also happens to feature a guest turn from the artist behind this week's No. 1 album, Rick Ross.) In this week's episode, we break down the week's big album debuts before talking to "Classic" duo MKTO. Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes HERE. In total, "Braveheart" is Ashanti's fifth top 10 album. All five of her studio releases have reached that region of the chart. Over on the Digital Songs chart, Pharrell's "Happy" remains at No. 1, selling 490,000 downloads — the biggest week for a digital song since Katy Perry's "Roar" debuted with 557,000 in the week ending Aug. 18, 2013. Overall, "Happy" tallies the 13th-largest sales week ever for a digital song and the eighth-largest for a non-debuting title. John Legend's "All of Me" reaches a new peak and its largest sales week as it jumps 4-2 with 210,000 (up 6%). It displaces Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" (featuring 2 Chainz), which falls 2-3 with 195,000 (down 10%). In the week after it won the Academy Award for best original song, "Let It Go," as performed by Idina Menzel, jumps 5-4 with its best sales week yet: 185,000 (up 42%). Itstotal sales rise to 1.7 million. Perry's "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, slips 3-5 with 182,000 (down 14%) while Bastille's "Pompeii" is steady at No. 6 with 117,000 (down 8%). Coldplay's new song "Magic" debuts at No. 7 with 114,000. The cut was released March 3, and is the first single from the band's forthcoming studio album, "Ghost Stories," which is due May 19. The rock band's last album, 2011's "Mylo Xyloto," was led by the single "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall," which debuted at No. 17 on Digital Songs with 85,000 from only three days of sales. A week later, after its first full week of availability, it jumped to No. 7 with 136,000. Aloe Blacc's "The Man" descends 7-8 with 108,000 (down 10%), and Lorde's "Team" is a non-mover at No. 9 with 90,000 (down 10%). The Chainsmokers' fast-rising hit "#SELFIE" zooms from No. 20 to No. 10 with 88,000 sold (up 64%). The cut also rises 33-27 on the Pop Songs airplay chart (known as Mainstream Top 40 on Billboard.biz). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending March 9) totaled 5 million units, down 1% compared with the sum last week (5.1 million) and down 9% compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5.5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 47.8 million, down 15% compared with the same total at this point last year (55.9 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 23.04 million downloads, up less than 1% compared with last week (22.99 million) and down 9% stacked next to the comparable week of 2013 (25.4 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 247.1 million, down 11% compared with the same total at this point last year (278.8 million). Next week's Billboard 200competes with the same week in 2013 when: Bon Jovi's "What About Now" debuted at No. 1 with 101,000 and David Bowie's "The Next Day" started at No. 2 with 85,000.

In Ashanti's case, it's a big difference whether the album is #10 or #12, well done for her.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/chart-watch-pharrell-happy-112k-201950563.htmlChart Watch: Will Pharrell Be “Happy” With 112K? By Paul Grein, Yahoo Music Pharrell Williams turned this year's Academy Awards into the world's biggest album-release party. His first solo album in nearly eight years, "G I R L," was released the day after the Oscars, where he performed his feel-good smash "Happy" as a big production number. So wouldn't you expect "G I R L" to sell more than 112K copies in its first week? It's a given that most albums don't sell like they used to. But some still do, as such varied stars as Luke Bryan, Eminem and Beyonce have proved in recent months. If anybody could defy downward sales trends you would think it would be Pharrell. He was featured on two of last year's biggest hits, Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" and Daft Punk's "Get Lucky." His own smash "Happy" is second only to "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry featuring Juicy J as this year's best-selling hit. (It will pull ahead next week). What's more, Pharrell has attained a level of fame that goes beyond mere sales numbers. The director of the Oscar telecast cut to him for reaction shots as often as he did the biggest movie stars. Williams' hat got more attention at the Grammys than most of the winners did. Even with all that going for it, "G I R L" enters The Billboard 200 at #2, behind Rick Ross's "Mastermind." Ross doesn't have one-tenth of Williams' media profile, but he sells a lot of albums. This is his fifth #1 album out of his six studio releases. For the record, "G I R L" surpasses the #3 debut of Williams's first solo album, "In My Mind," back in July 2006. Williams also reached the top 10 with two NERD albums that he recorded with Chad Hugo: "Fly Or Die" (#6 in 2004) and "Seeing Sounds" (#7 in 2008). And "G I R L" exceeded initial industry projections, which had the album starting with sales of 85K. "Happy" sold 490K copies in the U.S. this week. It's only the third song in digital history to top 400K in weekly sales three times. It follows "Blurred Lines" (which did it four times) and "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra. Both of those songs wound up as the best-sellers of their respective years. Will "Happy" follow suit? Stay tuned. "G I R L" enters the U.K.'s Official Albums Chart at #1. "Happy" has spent four weeks at #1 on the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart. Rick Ross's "Mastermind" is the second rap album in a row to hold down the #1 spot (following ScHoolboy Q's "Oxymoron"). This marks the first time that rap albums have appeared at #1 in back-to-back weeks since last summer, when albums by Kanye West, Wale, J. Cole and Jay Z held the #1 spot in succession. "Mastermind" sold 179K copies. That tally includes 101K digital copies, which also puts the album at #1 on Top Digital Albums. With five #1 albums on The Billboard 200, Ross is the second most successful chart-topper who was born in Mississippi. He trails only Elvis Presley, who had 10 #1 albums. And this just doesn't seem right, but here it is: Ross has now had one more #1 album than Diana Ross. The legendary singer had four #1 albums—three with the Supremes and one on her own. The "Frozen" soundtrack dips from #2 to #3. The album has appeared in the top five for 11 consecutive weeks. It's the first soundtrack from a theatrically-released movie to spend 11 weeks in the top five since "p8 Mile" in 2002-2003. Both of these albums spawned Oscar-winners for Original Song. "Frozen" is #1 on Top Soundtracks for the 15th week. The movie was in the top 10 at the box-office for the 15th weekend. "Frozen" features the voice of Broadway star Idina Menzel. Lea Michele, who debuts at #4 with "Louder," is also a Broadway veteran. She appeared in "Spring Awakening" from 2006 to 2008. Michele is the first cast member from "Glee" to land a top 10 album on her/his own. An eponymous album by Matthew Morrison debuted and peaked at #23 in May 2011. ("Glee: The Quarterback," an EP dedicated to Michelle's boyfriend Cory Monteith, debuted and peaked at #7 in October, three months after his death.) The Glee Cast has amassed 15 top 10 albums or EPs and has received three Grammy nominations. In addition, Michele received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2010. Eli Young Band lands its highest-charting album to date as its fifth studio album, "10,000 Towns," debuts at #5. The band's previous album, "Life At Best," reached #6 in 2011. The new album enters Top Country Albums at #1, displacing Dierks Bentley's "Riser." This is the band's first #1 country album. Ashanti's fifth studio album, "Braveheart," debuts at #10. All five albums have made the top 10. Mel Gibson's movie of the same name won an Oscar as Best Picture of 1995. This is the second top 10 album with the same title as an Oscar-winning Best Picture. Dave Matthews Band's "Crash" hit #2 in 1996. (Of course, I'm excluding soundtracks to the movies themselves.) As noted above, Pharrell Williams's "Happy" sold 490K copies. This is the 13th consecutive week that the song has sold more copies than it did the week before. It's #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the fourth week. Will the smash log its third week at #1 on the Hot 100? You'll find out later today when we post my first of two Songs blogs. Here's a recap of this week's top 10 albums. The Top Five: Rick Ross's "Mastermind" debuts at #1 (179K). It's his sixth top 10 album … Pharrell Williams's "G I R L" debuts at #2 (112K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time … Ashanti's "Braveheart" debuts at #10 (28K). It's her fifth top 10 album. Six albums drop out of the top 10 this week. The Fray's "Helios" plummets from #8 to #47. "Now 49" drops from #9 to #11. Beyonce's "Beyonce" drops from #10 to #12. David Nail's third studio album, "I'm A Fire," debuts at #13. It's his highest-charting album to date … American Authors' debut album, "Oh, What A Life," debuts at #15. Their top 30 single "Best Day Of My Life" will top the 1 million mark next week … Drive-By Truckers' 10th studio album, "English Oceans," debuts at #16. It's their first top 20 album. Thirty Seconds To Mars' "LOVE, LUST, FAITH + DREAMS" re-enters the chart at #25 in the wake of lead singer Jared Leto's Academy Award for "Dallas Buyers Club" and value pricing. The album debuted and peaked at #6 in May 2013. This is its second week in the top 30. The Notorious B.I.G.'s 2007 compilation "Greatest Hits" re-enters the chart at #54. It vaults from #64 to #1 on Top Catalog Albums. This is its first week on top of that chart. The rapper was shot to death in 1997. "300: Rise Of An Empire" was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. Junkie XL's soundtrack sold 1K copies, too few to make The Billboard 200. Bob Dylan's "30th Anniversary Concert Celebration" enters Top Music Videos at #1, with sales of 9K. This was recorded on Oct. 16, 1992 at Madison Square Garden in New York. A double live album from the concert reached #40 in 1993. Coming Attractions: Luke Bryan's "Spring Break 6...Like We Ain't Ever" is expected to vie for #1 next week. Also due: Aloe Blacc's "Lift Your Spirit," 311's "Stereolithic," "Young Money: Rise Of An Empire," Sara Evans's "Slow Me Down, Ledisi's "The Truth" and the "Divergent" soundtrack.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/5937415/chart-moves-thirty-seconds-to-mars-makes-post-oscar-gain-von-trapp-singersChart Moves: Thirty Seconds to Mars Makes Post-Oscar Gain, Von Trapp Singers Debut on Billboard 200 By Keith Caulfield | March 14, 2014 10:15 AM EDT This week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, Rick Ross claimed his fifth No. 1 album, while Pharrell Williams bowed at No. 2 with his second album, "G I R L." Outside the top 10, there were a number of movers and shakers. Let's take a closer look at some of them… -- Drive-By Truckers, "English Oceans" (No. 16): The band nabs its highest-charting album, and surpasses the opening-week sales of its last set, as its new release arrives at No. 16 with 18,000. The group's last album, “Go-Go Boots” in 2011, bowed with just under 18,000. -- Thirty Seconds to Mars, "Love Lust Faith + Dreams" (No. 25): The band, led by Oscar-winner Jared Leto, saw this album (up 1,335%) promoted by the iTunes Store for $4.99 for multiple days in the week ending March 9. The store also offered a free download of the set's song "City of Angels." -- Soundtrack, "American Hustle" (No. 52): The album's arrival in Starbucks stores pushes its sizable 153% sales gain this week (7,000 sold). An estimated 79% of its sales stem from the retailer in the week ending March 9. -- Various Artists, "Bob Dylan: The 30th Anniversary Concert" (No. 80): A deluxe reissue of the 1993 album -- commemorating a 30th-anniversary tribute concert to Dylan in 1992 -- returns to the chart with 4,000 sold. A highlights version of the concert began airing on PBS on March 1. -- Pink Martini & the Von Trapps, "Dream a Little Dream" (No. 115): The album features four of the great-grandchildren of Captain Georg von Trapp, whose story was the basis of "The Sound of Music." The set even boasts a guest turn from Charmian Carr, who played Liesl von Trapp in "The Sound of Music" film. On the "Dream a Little Dream" album, the von Trapp singers are Sofia, Melanie, Amanda and August von Trapp. They are the grandchildren of Werner von Trapp (who was the inspiration for the character Kurt in the "The Sound of Music"). This is the first appearance for the von Trapp singers on the Billboard 200. Their family's fictionalized story, however, has been incredibly successful on the charts. The original cast album of the stage show "The Sound of Music" spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while the movie soundtrack topped the chart for two weeks. The latter album recently returned to the chart last December, following NBC TV's live staging of the show starring Carrie Underwood. The NBC soundtrack also charted, hitting No. 17 on the tally. -- Prince and the Revolution, "Purple Rain" (No. 123): Google Play has been giving away select songs in its store, including this album's "Let's Go Crazy," helping prompt a 47% sales gain. The album itself was also discounted to $5.99. -- Newsboys, "God's Not Dead" (No. 166): Venue sales of the album (and the one at No. 118) at tour stops along the Winter Jam 2014 tour are the driver of its 22% gain. The band will also be featured in the upcoming "God's Not Dead" film, due in theaters on March 21.

Correct me if I'm wrong: is Vampire Weekend the only act to have two #1 albums without a Hot 100 appearance?

I think so.
Most recent ones who have at least one #1 album and no Hot 100 appearances: Il Divo, Slipknot, Vampire Weekend, The Decemberists, and Amos Lee.
Slipknot surprises me, a lot.
