The bottom line is... even if you change the station it still counts so long as your are being counted as a listener to that particular station around that time like it or not. it's the same thing with youtube. What I bolded is exactly my point. I don't really get the second half of your statement and have no idea how you got that from what I said unless you are mostly responding to another poster who was talking about liking or not liking a song depending on if you change the channel or not. My apologies if that is what you are doing and I am mistaken.
My point was that it is just like youtube-people can talk all day about how some people watch viral videos for the video and not the song so that shouldn't count, but you see the same possibilities with radio. Again, why should radio be the preferenced form of listening, actively or passively? I think some posters/music lovers place some bizarre mythological accuracy on radio and I don't get it. We should count radio, of course. Do I think it is somehow more indicative of popularity than sales or streams or views? Nope. I think all of those together give the most accurate picture. If you REALLY looked at viewing or listening habits for any form, it would get tricky, but there is absolutely no way to do that consistently. That is why, quite accurately, we count any view or listen.
I would say we are much more accurately tracking stuff now than when we just counted radio or even just radio and sales. Technology changes, how music is listened to changes, and I think billboard is correct to keep up with that rather than dig their heels in and only focus on the most traditional forms of music out there.

Oh yeah... I said it wrong... but yeah we are agreeing. Radio shouldn't get preferential treatment on the HOT 100. I don't think it should be a component for the HOT 100 at all. OnDemand and Youtube type streaming where people have to actually seek out the song directly should have a higher value placed on them IMO.

I'm of the opinion that sales + ondemand streaming and youtube like streaming (not pandora type streaming) should be counted towards the HOT100 IMO. Artists can sink or swim on that.

I still think if you took a survey of the people who watched the kissing video and you asked them about the song, they'd respond with what song? Most probably didn't even notice the music and probably perceived it as background white noise. It had some effect as it sold 10,000 units but to call it the 9th most popular song is just absurd. We're talking about it and I've again forgotten the name of it and the singer. It's not like Harlem Shake or the Selfie--videos that people looked for the music, or even parody videos of wrecking ball which was again all about the music. Now placing it at 9th place is basically harmless but if Billboard doesn't tweak their system a bit more they'll start to lose some credibility.

And I disagree about taking the effect of radio. Radio still sells music.  The majority of musical acts that have videos with tons of streams on it  still don't sell that many units. You just have to look at any indie artist and you can see this. It's when some radio station starts playing their music that you immediately see the rise in their sales and profile. Radio is still a very large influence on what's popular  which is why record labels court them so hard with some resorting to payola.  If radio was truly a wasteland  no one would bother paying to have their music heard. Radio gets priority because it's still the most effective way to get your music heard by a ton of people all at once. it doesn't matter if they're willing victims listening to it or they're irritated by the song, or bored or whatever other response. People are irritated and bored and claim to ignore all kinds of advertising too, yet still corporations continue to sell based on ads. Radio works. Repeating the songs on the radio over & over works with in the majority of case, the most popular songs on the radio usually selling the most records==see Happy!

True but also this time is usually a drought because the 4q sellers have had their moment and the summer song s come out in April May so this is the period of lull...which is perfect for new singles to come out and have less competition but adele, rihanna, nicki, taylor are not ready...

The other 94% are listening for traffic, sports, news etc... Radio has an older demographic and it will continue to get older. Radio has been reduced to people who are commuting listen to radio when they commute. I posted the study a couple of pages back. Its a good read.

Off topic, but there's a station here in Denver that is all comedy all the time - just clips from stand-up acts one after another. I think it's the weirdest thing!

Also, it looks like Sail is finally off the chart.

Tbh, I had a feeling sail would drop out this week. The song that never dies, had dropped out of the top 50. Radioactive at #33 on it's 81st week (lol).
Blurred lines looks to be on it's last week.
Note: After Radioactive drops out (assuming blurred lines drops out before then (which it will)) Demons would be the longest charting song on the chart. Radioactive has been the longest charting song since Ho Hey dropped out in mid 2013 (it had 62 weeks in its chart run).

It is possible for Demons to drop out before Radioactive...Radioactive is already higher in sales and streaming as Demons fell pretty hard...all that's stopping Demons from falling harder is radio. In that case (with Wake Me Up also dropping out), Royals will be the longest chart sitter. That would be interesting.

Going to need to be a hell of a crossover hit. 

Makes me wonder, is Party Rock Anthem the only really long standing song that isn't an AC crossover? I think even Cruise charted on HAC. PRA reached 15 on Adult Pop, so that's it. It's run was based on pop and hip-hop perfomance only, who knows how long it would of lasted had it spread to other formats.

Probably but it would be naive to think that the current record would last forever. If it is a song that hasn't been released yet, we have at least two years but something will materialize

The Jason Mraz mark of 76 weeks didn't last all that long then along comes two songs that beat it. It will happen again, just a matter of time.

Mind you Mraz did it without streaming, but that being said the more changes Billboard adds to the chart the longer runs are going to get because there's just that many factors more that is affecting the run. I'm sure in a few years they'll add a new format which will cause songs to easily cross the one year point, but then we'd have a chart that stayed the same without any new content for ages.
