^ Perhaps I should have included album cuts?...Oh well. To be honest I probably would have listed close to 200 songs if I did album cuts for this particular year. Nice to someone else bring up "The River" by Chely Wright and "The Bride" by Trick Pony. Great to see "Promise Broken" and "I Just Got Back From Hell" from Gary as well. Tough All Over was a very dark album but it would have been nice to see them throw a third single out there, and the two you mentioned were my two candidates.

Whoops! The thread title just says "songs", so I went by that. But I see your post specified singles. I'll edit my list.

A few of my favorites from 2005:
Gary Allan - "Best I Ever Had" Jeff Bates - "Long, Slow Kisses" Dierks Bentley - "Come A Little Closer" Kenny Chesney - "Anything But Mine" Mark Chesnutt - "A Hard Secret To Keep" Andy Griggs - "If Heaven" Alan Jackson - "Monday Morning Church" Blaine Larsen - "How Do You Get That Lonely" LeAnn Rimes - "Probably Wouldn't Be This Way" Blake Shelton - "Goodbye Time" George Strait - "You'll Be There" Randy Travis - "Angels" Shania Twain - "Don't" Daryl Worley - "If Something Should Happen"
I'm sure there's more but that's a quick list of some of the hits from that year.
edit: I knew I forgot one of my favorites that year and she's worth coming back to edit this post as I'll feel horrible for leaving it off and not mentioning it.
Patty Loveless - "Keep Your Distance"

Good God, 2005 had a bumper crop of amazing stuff. Sadly, most of it didn't take off. But at least I got to hear it a lot on WATZ. "Baby Girl" would probably be my #1 of the year though. I could easily list 100 songs from that year and still have to make some major cuts.

Danni O'Neill - Breakin' It Down 4. Jace Everett - Bad Things (I was one of the 10 people who knew about this song before "True Blood" was a thing) 5. Drew Davis Band - Back There All the Time (yes, it charted later on, but that was a re-release; I was one of the lucky few to hear it the first time around) 6. Todd Fritsch - Small Town Radio (this song fit in so well with me discovering WATZ; Todd even made a market-specific remix for them!) 7. Joey Daniels - Swingin' Door (sadly, one of the only good songs on that album) 8. Shelly Fairchild - Kiss Me 9. Kevin Sharp - I Think I'll Stay 10. Brice Long - It's Only Monday 11. Told you this would be a crazy list. TOP 16. Steve Azar - Doin' It Right 29. Jace Everett - That's the Kind of Love I'm In 39. Zona Jones - Two Hearts 49. Dwight Yoakam - Intentional Heartache/Blame the Vain 71. Keith Anderson - Pickin' Wildflowers (so sue me) NON-CHARTING STANDOUTS (there are so-many non-charting gems from this year that I gave them their own list) 1. Cowboy Troy/Sarah Buxton - If You Don't Wanna Love Me ( I think this song alone justifies the fact that Cowboy Troy even had a career) 8. Shelly Fairchild - Kiss Me 10. Brice Long - It's Only Monday I love most of the songs you listed but these ones caught my eye since most don't even remember them. * "Doin' It Right" was Steve's most underrated single. * I love Jace's debut album and don't know how radio overlooked him. * "Two Hearts" had a really odd and long chart run. I had low expectations for the song with it being promoted by Quarterback Records and the fact his name was 'Zona' but I was dead wrong -- great song. * "Intentional Heartache's" video was great and made me enjoy the song even more. * I liked "Pickin' Wildflowers" too. * "If You Don't Wanna Love Me" is easily the best thing Cowboy Troy has ever done and proved he had some talent. * Shelly's lackluster show at radio is so sad since her music was so great and her singles got progressively better. * To this day I have no idea how Brice Long bombed so bad at radio, and how in the hell did "It's Only Monday" not even chart?!

WATZ played "Doin' It Right" a lot since Steve had been at the Brown Trout Festival in Alpena around that time. I remember his show being ridiculously loud. He was also at the free country concert that WKCQ puts on every year, so they played it a lot too, which was really unusual for them — they rarely play anything below top 20. (This year, WKCQ's free concert features Jerrod Niemann and RaeLynn. I've already caught them playing "God Made Girls", and if they play "Donkey", I'm boycotting them forever.)
I remember some one-hour syndicated show that spotlighted new country and had a really inarticulate host who seemed to say "Man, I really like that song" about everything. He must've called "Intentional Heartache" "International Heartache" at least three times.
The really weird thing about Brice Long is that Chris Cagle covered "Anywhere but Here" only a year after Brice had it out, and Chris's version peaked one space LOWER.

The really weird thing about Brice Long is that Chris Cagle covered "Anywhere but Here" only a year after Brice had it out, and Chris's version peaked one space LOWER. Steve was a guest on GAC Nights with Suzanne Alexander when "Doin' It Right" was charting and that's when he told the story of how he had a mild case of "writer's block" one evening with R.C Bannon and Jason Young. He then said he ate some Tootsie Rolls he had bought earlier and for some reason that first line popped in his head, "I got me a brand new car, waitin' in the driveway."
The only thing that would have been worse than "Anywhere But Here" failing once on the charts, was failing on the charts twice, six months later. I still play the Brice version regularly. D. Vincent Williams ("Down By The River") co-wrote it.

A lot of people are really invested in the mid-2000s and I just never saw it that way. Sure there's some decent songs here, but most of it is forgettable to me. Personal opinions and all that. Here was my top ten of the year based on the my weekly top ten songs throughout the year:
1. Who You'd Be Today - Kenny Chesney [4 weeks @ #1] 2. Back When - Tim McGraw [3 weeks] 3. Bless The Broken Road - Rascal Flatts [3 weeks] 4. That's What I Love About Sunday - Craig Morgan [3 weeks] 5. Goodbye Time - Blake Shelton [3 weeks] 6. Alcohol - Brad Paisley [3 weeks] 7. Monday Morning Church - Alan Jackson [2 weeks] 8. Anything But Mine - Kenny Chesney [2 weeks] 9. You'll Be There - George Strait [3 weeks] 10. Redneck Yacht Club - Craig Morgan [2 weeks]
