Dierks started filming the video today in LA. Hope it's a good one! Definitely one of those songs you absolutely want a music video too. Dierks filming a music video about getting drunk on a plane in Los Angeles. This has to be hilarious right?

Well this song has already charted as high as Bourbon in Kentucky on BB already. I really hope this song doesn't take as long as I Hold On to chart this time, its such a great and unique song. The lyrics probably won't get the respect it's due because the subject matter isn't as serious as songs like I Drive Your Truck, but I find the dark/comedic tones of the writing to be amazing. I imagine this will be another top 5 hit at the very least.

I'm gonna have to give this album a second listen. Despite the critical praise , nothing grabbed me when I first sampled it. But I like this....

This is probably my favourite Dierks song now. I'm really glad to see it taking off so well, especially after the slow start of his last couple of singles. I think this could be a huge summer hit for him.

It's at #33 on the Billboard chart after only 5 weeks; definitely a great start for Dierks. What impresses me more is the sales. It's #93 already on the all-genre iTunes chart.

I think this is going to be a big hit for him. It's such an original type of song, nothing sounds like it. The chorus is very catchy, and it's such a nice change of pace following I Hold On. The title alone should bring so much intrigue to this song, and help fuel the sales.

The iTunes sales are especially impressive when you consider that one week ago today, it was #363 all-genre (according to Kworb) - listeners are definitely responding to the song as they hear it. This is off to a great start. If my math is correct (and it's possible that it's not) it's at 102 Mediabase stations after just 3 official weeks at radio. It took MONTHS for IHO to get to that point. And #1 most-added in week 3 on Mediabase is pretty surprising, at least to me. I fully expect the adds will taper off since there aren't all that many stations left, but even though I expected this song to do well for Dierks, I'm a bit surprised by HOW well it's doing. But it is memorable and different, and I do think listeners are responding well to it. So, yay. I really hope he has a great year, fueled in part by this song. :)

I wasn't too keen on this song for awhile and was disappointed it was chosen as the next single over "Sounds of Summer", but now I'm obsessed with this! Its such a different idea and its really fun. Glad to see its doing well so far!

I admit I'm just a lurker in the country forum but I really can't believe that every other month there's either a new ode to a car/truck (at least switch it up and add a bus, moto, bike, van, jeep, etc) or a new poem to drinking/ getting drunk / having a beer. Some are good songs (last weekend I downloaded Drink to that all night, which I like), but show some more variety geez!!

^ Yes country music has plenty of fun drinking songs and always have; but the other songs about life, family, and dealing with problems were played right along side it before- that is until now. There's plenty of great country music still being made, unfortunately country radio doesn't play most of it.
Songs like "Sleepy Little Town", "Be Grateful", "What Are You Listening To", "Best Seat In The House", "I Miss You", "We Can't Be Friends", "Better", and "Dance Baby Dance" are not deemed radio friendly and most of those were purposely held off til the fall/winter to even have a chance at radio, which is another thing that bothers me but I'll save that discussion for some other time.
"Drunk On A Plane" is a good song because of the uniqueness of the subject. People like the poster a few posts up get the impression that this is all country music is today with the "Bottoms Up", "This Is How We Roll", "Drink To That All Night", "Play It Again's" of the world because they are the biggest hits. It really irritates me that there are non-country listeners thinking that drinking songs with trucks and moonlight is the identity of country music now and days. I can't fully blame anybody who's under that impression because it's true. It is a shame though that Dierks' song is the one that had to have that pointed out.

What separates DOAP from the others is, like sabre said, the creativity. It actually feels like there was some effort put into it. Not to mention it's not even a party song. It's a breakup song.

Exactly sabre, I'm not a country music follower. I listen to a video countdown maybe once every two months, see titles in the hot 100 airplay and of course pay attention to more popular songs. I've been lucky with some free downloads and album reviews too. So I have Follow your arrow, You're not alone, Done!, The house that built me, invisible in my iPhone. Then I have Drunk on you, Drink on it too and then keep just seeing those titles popping up and just whenever I see titles like those (or truck yeah, cop car, etc) I lose interest in finding out more about such song. Jarrod's video made me interested and I downloaded the song voluntarily (Luke Bryan's came as part of a Now! Album I bought, and Blake Shelton's came because thanks to an album review I read plus seeing him in the voice plus liking Over and another song, I downloaded his full album). If this is a worthy song I'll give it a try tho. But I don't think you can just be a 'superior' smartass and say "no" that easily to my point

If you include Bourbon in Kentucky, I'd say the first three singles from Riser can match any other first three singles from an album in the past couple of years. There's great range, emotion, lyrics, and all have such unique stories that really separate themselves from other songs on the radio. I can only hope this song can reach #1 to reward those who don't just continue to make the same generic type of songs.

Took a few listens but this song is fantastic. I'm usually not into "party" songs because I'm not much of a partier my self. I think the fact that the party in this song is actually only happening because of a breakup is why I like it. Either way I believe this is a perfect uptempo and one of the strongest ones in a few years. I really hope this explodes this summer so other artists will see that you can take chances lyrically and sonically while still adhereing to country traditions and score a hit.
Side note: Dierks Bentley and Sara Evans have been owning my year musically so far, and it made me realize I'd love to hear them do a duet one day. I think their voices would sound splendid together.

If this is a worthy song I'll give it a try tho. But I don't think you can just be a 'superior' smartass and say "no" that easily to my point This may not be correct, but your posts read as if you've never actually given this song a chance and are merely judging a book by its cover in this instance based on the inclusion of the word 'drunk' and the association of a common lyrical theme that's currently saturating the format. This was the gist I got from your initial post, and you further solidified by putting "Truck Yeah" and "Cop Car" in the same sentence. I can't imagine you've listened to both of them -- and the implication that you "see those titles popping up" supports that assumption -- because literally no one can put those songs on the same playing field in terms of their lyrics and message. There are plenty of songs that fit the description of being an ode to a car/truck, or drinking and getting drunk. But neither "Cop Car" or "Drunk On a Plane" fit in those molds in that sense. They're both clever, unique songs that just happen to have titles with the words 'car' and 'drunk' in them, but there is a helluva lot more to both than the cover might suggest. **Just got to the last part in bold after typing the above paragraph and it just confirmed all of my suspicions. You really can't come in here and complain about this song if you haven't even bothered to hear it. And carriekins was not being a "superior smartass" in her comment. Maybe you can try listening to a song next time you feel the need to contribute to a discussion on it. It'd be like joining a book club and commenting on the contents of the novel itself when you haven't even opened it yet. Side note: Dierks Bentley and Sara Evans have been owning my year musically so far, and it made me realize I'd love to hear them do a duet one day. I think their voices would sound splendid together. YES PLEASE! This would seriously be such a lovely idea. I'm sure at the very least carriekins and I would be happy campers indeed, lol.

You know I've never thought of Sara and Dierks doing a duet but the more I think about it ... the more I'm on board. :) (I'd much prefer him collaborate with Sara than the rumored FGL collab he did. *vomit*)

I'm not a historian on the level of several posters in this forum, but I'll try to provide a little context. Alcohol (beer and whiskey mostly), has generally featured pretty prominently in country music, typically serving in one of two roles: a temporary means of relaxation and escape from ordinary working class troubles (and maybe even a bit of defiance against an unsympathetic boss), or, when consumed in excess, as a symbol of a person's heartbreak, misery and inadequacy. It's sort of part and parcel with country music's emergence as the music of rural (Southern) working class. So as sabre14 mentioned, there have always been escapist country songs that talk about throwing back a beer or getting drunk and rowdy, and there have also always been sad country songs that talk about a person crying in his or her beer, or worse, succumbing to addiction because he or she has just flat out given up on life (an obvious example, "Whiskey Lullaby," a duet between Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss).* "Drunk on a Plane" kind of draws from both categories of "alcohol" songs mentioned above. It is, literally, a boozy escapist party song, and we get a few details in the song that point to the honeymoon-turned-solo-vacation being a splurge from a regular working guy who can't just write off the money he had spent on this trip. But as Kanenrá:ke noted, the core of the song is heartbreak, and the song depicts a guy whose reaction to it is over-the-top drunkenness. He feels self-conscious and pathetic, and he knows he looks like a fool. Since you mentioned Luke Bryan, the point of view of "Drunk on a Plane" is not unlike that of Luke's first single, "All My Friends Say," but between Dierks' vocal performance, some well-chosen images and details (like the picture of his ex taped to the seat back right beside him, and feeling like "a plastic groom alone there at the top of the cake") and a well-chosen guitar riff from Ross Copperman, "Drunk on a Plane" has more of a sarcastic and bitter bite. The result is a song that has more of an individual character and feels much more self-aware than the parade of fratty party songs referencing trucks and beer that is championed by country radio at the moment. There isn't much doubt in my mind that "Drunk on a Plane" was sent out to radio in an effort to capitalize on today's beer-soaked, male-driven, party-hearty atmosphere at country radio. Dierks has better songs on his album, and as I said in my post about Riser, "Drunk on a Plane" isn't all that representative of the overall tone of the album. But I think the song is still a good example of how it is possible to write a song that appeals to country radio's current target demo without ignoring the importance of storytelling and without resorting to the same old tired tropes about trucks, beer, and moonlit/sunset backwoods parties. With "Drunk on a Plane"'s early download sales tracking well ahead of its airplay, I look forward to citing it as an example of how there is just no excuse for songwriters and artists not to be reaching for at least a little originality. * sabre14 is also right to point out that all the alcohol songs have historically been a part of a more diverse group of country songs that cover topics like marriage, family, faith, mortality, love, etc.

Every time I watch the video I notice something different. They did a great job and debuting the song on Funny or Die is more exposure for the song (which is sitting at #11 on iTunes Country I do believe).
I have to babble about the new tour. Dierks really knocked it out of the park. If the Riser Tour is coming near you, I strongly urge you to go. You won't be disappointed. He still doesn't rely on a lot of "tricks" or pyro or anything to sell the show, it's mostly just him, his hits, some covers, and a ton of energy, but man, is it a good time, and he really does try make everybody feel like they're in the front row. It was really great to be there on Friday for opening night and to see 15,000 people on their feet and singing every world back to him. I was also SO HAPPY that Bourbon in Kentucky is in the setlist!!! (And very surprised by how many people were singing along - the NC markets did NOT jump on that song.)
Back to DOAP, HUGE update today on Mediabase - picked up 762k in audience and over 100 spins. Based on how it's selling, I'm starting to think this song is going to blow up in a big way. Hopefully that will build enough momentum that Riser can be released to radio (and be successful). :)

Ah, the video for this is even better than I'd imagined it would be! I'm glad they went all-out for this and really pushed the ridiculousness, because it made for a very entertaining view. There was a lot going on and the acting was definitely done quite well. This only helps me like the song more, which is already growing on me in a big way. I'm excited to see how well "Drunk on a Plane" ends up doing, because it looks like a bonafide smash in the making.

I'm so glad they stayed true to the song for the video. For once a music video is exactly what I was expecting and what I hoped for. I love how they tried to have all the little things mentioned in the song covered and Dierks did a great job playing multiple roles.
There's definitely a chance that "Drunk On A Plane" can be one of Dierks' biggest hits and become one of the biggest songs of the year.

This will probably end up as one of the most watched music videos of the year, they did such an amazing job with the video. The sales are strong as well, and everything seems to be leading up to a huge hit. Not to mention it will probably peak near the end of summer, which will be perfect timing.
