www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.28225/title.hip-hop-album-sales-week-ending-04-06-2014Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 04/06/2014 by Andres Tardio posted April 09, 2014 This week, the three highest-charting albums affiliated with Rap on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart are projects by Pharrell, YG and Rick Ross. Pharrell's G I R L has continued chart success as the "Happy" producer-singer-rapper maintains a slot in the week's Top 10. Meanwhile, YG's My Krazy Life and Rick Ross's Mastermind remain in the Top 20. Pharrell's G I R L Remains In Top 10 Pharrell's G I R L is the highest charting album this week by an artists affiliated with Rap. While Pharrell has rapped throughout his career, and while a bulk of his work as a producer has been in Rap, the Virginia producer takes a different approach at times on this album, choosing to sing more than he chooses to rap on G I R L. Nevertheless, the album's placement on the chart this week (#9) is an indication of his recent success. The album sold 24,808 copies this week, a two percent drop from last week's 25,308. That 2 percent drop also helped Pharrell fall from #5 last week to #9 this week. Overall, G I R L has sold 242,133 units. G I R L earned Pharrell a 3.5 out of 5 in the album's HipHopDX review. "While G I R L is too surface-level at times, it hits the target it’s aimed for," HipHopDX said at the time. "Pharrell wants summertime airplay, and any of these songs could survive on the radio. It’s also a nice tribute to feminine vigor, adding another notch to Pharrell’s ever-growing list of achievements. He has plenty to be happy about these days." YG's My Krazy Life Falls To #16 YG's My Krazy Life, in its third week of availability, earned the #16 spot on the charts this week after selling 16,437 units. My Krazy Life, the highest charting Rap album this week, experienced a 28 percent decrease from last week's placement at #7. Overall, the album, which debuted at #2, has sold 100,288 copies. The album earned a 3 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "With the exception of [the song] 'Me & My Bitch' (a tale of two way infidelity) wedged in between a festive midsection, the Pushaz Ink crew has pieced together a well sequenced and cohesive package with My Krazy Life, but this aspect and his street credibility aren’t enough to win over naysayers expecting an overall greater performance," HipHopDX said in its review of the album. Rick Ross's Mastermind Remains In Top 20 Rick Ross's Mastermind album is the second-highest charting Rap album this week. Its position at #18 is a 19 percent drop from its placement at #11 on last week's chart. Mastermind, which sold 15,336 copies this week, has sold 289,925 units overall in five weeks of availability. Like YG's My Krazy Life, Rick Ross's Mastermind earned a 3 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "There isn’t anything really compelling about Rick Ross’ fictional tale anymore," HipHopDX said at the time of its review. "It has become stale." Mobb Deep's The Infamous Mobb Deep Debuts At #49 Mobb Deep's The Infamous Mobb Deep, one of this week's Rap debuts, lands at #49 in its first week of availability. The project sold 7,074 copies this week, just enough to land in the Top 50. The project recently earned the duo a 4 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "There are no fun and games here," HipHopDX said in its review of the project. "Just business. Havoc and Prodigy are as dialed in as ever. The Infamous Mobb Deep is a return to the roots of their artistic consciousness, substantiated almost 20 years ago, and with fine precision. With an all-star cast of guest lyricists and a gang of producers, The Infamous Mobb Deep is a loud wake-up call for Hip Hop. The Rap game is survival of the fittest, and Mobb Deep still roams among the strong." Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 04/06/2014 #9. Pharrell Williams – G I R L – 25,000 (242,000) #16. YG – My Krazy Life – 16,000 (100,000) #18. Rick Ross – Mastermind – 15,000 (290,000) #23. Beyonce- Beyonce – 13,000 (1,919,000) #26. Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP 2 – 13,000 (2,042,000) #33. www.billboard.com/articles/news/6042257/5-seconds-of-summer-debuts-at-no-2-on-billboard-200-frozen-no-1 5 Seconds Of Summer Debuts At No. 2 on Billboard 200; 'Frozen' Still No. 1By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | April 09, 2014 Disney's soundtrack to "Frozen" refuses to budge from the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200. The set spends a ninth nonconsecutive week atop the list, having sold 149,000 copies in the week ending April 6 (down 8 percent), according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album is one week away from tying Disney's "The Lion King" for the longest run at No. 1 by an animated film soundtrack. "The Lion King" roared for 10 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 in 1994 and 1995. "Frozen" has now sold 1.9 million copies. It has been among the top three best-selling albums every week for the past 14 consecutive weeks. A little behind "Frozen" on the latest Billboard 200 is Australian pop/rock band 5 Seconds of Summer, debuting at No. 2 with its EP "She Looks So Perfect." The set, released by Capitol Records, sold 143,000 copies, with downloads comprising 75% of its first-week sales. The EP's debut is a bit softer than had been forecast almost two weeks ago, when some industry sources suggested it would sell between 150,000 to 200,000. That estimate was basedpartly on strong pre-orders for the title in the iTunes Store, which had been building its pre-order tally since late February. By last Friday, its first-week forecast was scaled back to around 130,000 to 140,000. Five Seconds of Summer gained notoriety last year after opening for One Direction on the bulk of its arena tour. It will join the group again this year as 1D’s opening act for the Europe, U.S. and Canada legs of its stadium tour, starting May 23. (Both acts are managed by Modest Management.) At No. 3 on the new Billboard 200 is rock band Chevelle with "La Gargola," debuting with 45,000. It's the highest-charting effort for the act (though not its best sales week), surpassing the No. 6 debut and peak of 2009's "Sci-Fi Crimes." Singer-songwriter Christina Perri notches the third debut in the top four, as her second full-length album, "Head or Heart," enters at No. 4 with 40,000. It matches her chart high with "Lovestrong.," set in 2011, though it falls short of that set's opening sales frame of 58,000. Shakira's self-titled album falls three spots to No. 5 in its second week, selling 29,000 (down 66 percent). Country duo Dan + Shay start at No. 6 with "Where It All Began," selling nearly 29,000. The set — the act's first album — is led by its hit single "19 You + Me," which rises 12-11 on the latest Country Airplay chart, dated April 19. Pop Shop Podcast: Shakira, Justin Timberlake & More In this week's episode, we break down Shakira's album debut and Justin Timberlake's latest Top 20 hit, and speak to new girl group G.R.L. Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes HERE. Bluegrass trio Nickel Creek returns to the chart, bowing at No. 7 with "A Dotted Line" with 27,000 — its first album in nearly nine years and its first top 10 effort. It last charted with 2005's "Why Should the Fire Die?," which debuted and peaked at No. 17. Johnny Cash's "Out Among the Stars" slips 3-8 with 26,000 (down 52 percent), Pharrell's "G I R L" dips 5-9 with 25,000 (down 2 percent), and the "Now 49" compilation rises 13-10 with 20,000 (up 24 percent). Over on the Digital Songschart, things are fairly static in the top 10, save for a new arrival from Luke Bryan. Pharrell's "Happy" stays put at No. 1 (284,000; down 12 percent), while John Legend's "All of Me" is also a non-mover at No. 2 (228,000; up 1 percent). Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty," featuring 2 Chainz, climbs 4-3 (156,000; down 3 percent), Idina Menzel's "Let It Go" descends 3-4 (154,000; down 6 percent), and Katy Perry's "Dark Horse," featuring Juicy J, is steady at No. 5 (154,000; down 12 percent). Aloe Blacc's "The Man" and DJ Snake & Lil Jon's "Turn Down for What" are both stationary at Nos. 6 and 7, respectively. They sold 106,000 (down 14 percent) and 96,000 (down less than 1 percent). Luke Bryan's "Play It Again" reaches the top 10 for the first time, jumping 15-8 in its fourth week on the chart. It sold 88,000 downloads (up 40%). The singer performed the track on the Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday, April 6 — the final day of the SoundScan tracking week. Bastille's "Pompeii" slides 8-9 with 85,000 (down 9 percent), and the Chainsmokers' "#SELFIE" dips 9-10 with 79,000 (down 14 percent). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending April 6) totaled 4.9 million units, up 4 percent compared with the sum last week (4.7 million) and down 14 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5.7 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 66.6 million, down 16 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (79.7 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 21.4 million downloads, down less than 1 percent compared withlast week (21.5 million) and down 24 percent stacked next to the comparableweek of 2013 (28.3 million). Year-to-date track sales are at 333.4 million, down 13 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (384.8million). Next week's Billboard 200competes with the same week in 2013 when: Paramore notched its first No. 1 album with its self-titled set, debuting atop the list with 106,000. It beat out Brad Paisley's "Wheelhouse" to the top slot, as Paisley's effort started at No. 2 with 100,000.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/chart-watch-5-reasons-5-seconds-summer-hot-184749952.htmlChart Watch: 5 Reasons 5 Seconds Of Summer Is Hot By Paul Grein, Yahoo! Chart Watch 5 Seconds Of Summer's "She Looks So Perfect: U.S. Tour Edition" enters The Billboard 200 at #2, just behind the inexhaustible "Frozen" soundtrack. The pop/rock quartet was formed in Sydney, Australia three years ago. 5SOS looks like a boy band, but its sound is closer to power-pop, at least on this single. All four group members play instruments. Lead singer Luke Hemmings plays guitar. The group also includes Michael Clifford (guitar), Calum Hood (bass guitar) and Ashton Irwin (drums). The group's four-song EP sold 143K copies in its first week, fairly close to the 176K that One Direction's first album, "Up All Night," sold in its first week in March 2012. (1D's last two albums, "Take Me Home" and "Midnight Memories," have each sold more than 500K copies in their first weeks). Here are five reasons that 5 Seconds Of Summer (5SOS to fans) has gotten off to a fast start. 1. Their single "She Looks So Perfect" is an international hit. It reached #1 last week on the U.K.'s Official Singles Chart. It has also hit #1 in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. And now it's breaking in the U.S.: It's the top new entry on Hot Digital Songs this week at #26 (51K). 2. The group has opened for One Direction, the reigning boy band, and Hot Chelle Rae, whose "Tonight, Tonight" (#7 on the Hot 100 in summer 2011) was fizzy good fun. 3. The song's video has broad appeal. It features many characters, of all body types, taking their shirts off. "I love how they don't just use perfect people," one fan commented at YouTube. 4. There's always demand for new acts in the teen pop world. One Direction's first hit, "What Makes You Beautiful," came out a little more than two years ago. Justin Bieber's first hit, "One Time," came out nearly five years ago. That's an eternity in teen pop terms. 5. After a long, cold winter in much of the U.S., a name like "5 Seconds Of Summer" has undeniable appeal. 5SOS is the third band from Sydney to reach the top five, following AC/DC, which has had seven top five albums, and INXS, which had two. The group's EP sold 108K digital copies, which puts it at #1 on Top Digital Albums. "Frozen" logs its ninth week at #1. This puts it in third place among all albums in the last 10 years. Adele's "21" leads in that time frame, with 24 weeks on top. Taylor Swift's "Fearless" is in second place, with 11 weeks. "Wait a second," you may be thinking. "How about Usher's 'Confessions'? That album was also #1 for nine weeks." True. But its first week at #1 slips out of the "last 10 years" window this week. Hey, we run a tight ship here at Chart Watch. "Frozen" has been #1 for four consecutive weeks. It's the first album to notch four straight weeks on top since Taylor Swift's "Red" was #1 the last four weeks of 2012. "Frozen" is also #1 on Top Soundtracks for the 19th week. The movie was in the top 20 at the box-office for the 19th weekend. Chevelle's sixth major-label studio album, "La Gargola," debuts at #3. It's the hard rock band's highest-charting album to date. It surpasses "Sci-Fi Crimes," which reached #6 in 2009. The band was formed in 1995 in a Chicago suburb. Christina Perri's second studio album "Head Or Heart" debuts at #4. This matches the peak position of her 2011 debut, "lovestrong." Dan + Shay's debut album "Where It All Began" debuts at #6. It enters Top Country Albums at #1, displacing Johnny Cash's "Out Among The Stars." Dan + Shay (which consists of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney) is the third duo to reach #1 on the country chart since January 2010, following Sugarland and Florida Georgia Line. The album features the duo's breakthrough hit, "19 You + Me." Dan + Shay were nominated for Vocal Duo of the Year at the ACM Awards on Sunday, even though their album was released just five days before the show. Nickel Creek's sixth studio album, "A Dotted Line," debuts at #7. It's the group's first top 10 album. The band was formed in in Southern California in 1989—six years before Nickelback was formed in Alberta, Canada. Pharrell Williams's "Happy" is #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the eighth week, with sales of 284K. Will the smash log its seventh week at #1 on the Hot 100? You'll find out later today when we post my first of two Chart Watch Songs blogs. Here's a recap of this week's top 10 albums. It's the first top 20 album by the indie rock band … The Used's sixth studio album, "Imaginary Enemy," debuts at #14, breaking a string of four straight top 10 studio albums by the rock band. "Ronnie James Dio: This Is Your Life" debuts at #20. The tribute album features such artists as Metallica, Anthrax, the Scorpions, Rob Halford, Motorhead and Tenacious D. Dio rose to prominence in the 1970s in the band Rainbow. In 1979, he replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath. Dio released his first Dio album, "Holy Diver," in 1983. He died of stomach cancer in 2010 at age 67. (Two other tribute albums debut this week. "Looking Into You: A Tribute To Jackson Browne" opens at #44. Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt and Lyle Lovett are among the artists featured. "Working Man's Poet: A Tribute To Merle Haggard" bows at #85. Jason Aldean, Toby Keith and Garth Brooks are among the artists featured.) Eric Church's "The Outsiders" drops from #17 to #22 in its eighth week. It becomes the first album released in 2014 to sell 500K copies. "Frozen" and Beyonce's "Beyonce" have sold more copies this year, but they were released in 2013 … Newsboys's 2011 album "God's Not Dead" drops from #48 to #52 in its 56th week on the chart. It's #1 on Top Catalog Albums for the second week. The title track is featured in the faith-based movie of the same name, which has been in the top five at the box-office the past three weekends. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" was #1 at the box-office over the weekend. The soundtrack, featuring a score by Henry Jackman, sold 2K copies, too few to make The Billboard 200. Metallica's "Through The Never" is #1 on Top Music Videos for the sixth week. The DVD has sold 68K copies in 11 weeks. Coming Attractions: Look for SoMo's "SoMo" to be among next week's top new entries. Also due: Rico Love's "Discrete," Black Label Society's "Catacoms," Martina McBride's "Everlasting," MercyMe's "Welcome To The New" and SZA's EP "Z."

"In its second week, Barry Manilow's "Night Songs" drops from #8 completely off The Billboard 200." Oh my god! That's 90% drop And since it wasn't a diva, Billboard didn't mention it.

Not really, not sure of the circumstances surrounding this album but the Twin Cities albums that come out every so often have limited production runs and sell out in the first week. SO they would typically debut high then fall out a week later

If Manilow's album were an exclusive to one retailer or something, the drop possibly would make more sense. But I don't think that's the case.

The Manilow album is available on Amazon and Wal-Mart's websites, but not Target.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/6049056/chart-moves-trio-of-tribute-albums-arrive-on-billboard-200 Chart Moves: Trio of Tribute Albums Arrive on Billboard 200, Luke Bryan's ACM Gain, Cyndi Lauper's 'Unusual' ReturnsBy Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | April 10, 2014 Outside the top 10, there were a number of movers and shakers -- let's take a closer look at some of them: -- Various Artists, "Ronnie James Dio: This Is Your Life" - No. 20 - There's a bevy of new tribute albums on the Billboard 200, as three tribute sets debut on the April 19-dated chart. The celebratory lineup is led by "Ronnie James Dio: This Is Your Life" (No. 20 with 15,000 sold) and followed by "Looking Into You: A Tribute to Jackson Browne" (No. 44; 8,000) and "Working Man's Poet: A Tribute to Merle Haggard" (No. 85; 5,000). The Dio set features Metallica, Anthrax, Killswitch Engage and Scorpions, among others. The two-disc Browne tribute includes more than 20 acts, including Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt and Bruce Springsteen. Finally, the Merle Haggard set -- which is exclusive to Target and iTunes -- boasts the likes of Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan. Also worth noting: Elton John has a quasi-tribute album on the chart as well. On the Billboard 200 dated April 12, his 40th anniversary deluxe reissue of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" returned to the chart, re-entering the list at No. 53. The expanded package includes a bonus disc of covers of "Goodbye" songs, as recorded by contemporary artists. (For example, Ed Sheeran covers "Candle in the Wind" while Fall Out Boy takes on "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting.") "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" slips 53-95 on the April 19-dated chart. -- Steel Panther, "All You Can Eat" - No. 24 - The spoof-metal band collects its third No. 1 on the Comedy Albums chart with the debut of "All You Can Eat." The set -- the rock quartet's third effort -- also enters the Billboard 200 at a career-high No. 24 with their biggest sales week yet (13,000). -- Luke Bryan, "Tailgates & Tanlines" - No. 79 - Luke Bryan, who co-hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards (ACMs) on April 6 (with Blake Shelton) sees his "Tailgates & Tanlines" album earn the chart's largest percentage sales gain and biggest positional jump. It is up by 103 percent and rises from No. 178 to No. 79 (5,000 sold). Bryan, like Shelton, also performed on CBS' broadcast of the show, which aired live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Shelton's own "Based On a True Story" album had a 100 percent gain, zipping from No. 73 to No. 32 with 10,000 sold. A bevy of albums benefit greatly from appearances and performances by their respective artists on the ACMs. Those include Kacey Musgraves' "Same Trailer Different Park" (114-65 with 6,000; up 75 percent), Eric Church's "Chief" (104-185 with 4,000; 64 percent) and Jason Aldean's "Night Train" (85-53 with 7,000; up 61 percent). -- Daughtry, "Baptized" - No. 89 - Daughtry's most recent studio album, "Baptized," re-enters the chart at No. 89 with 4,000 (up 126 percent), following the band's performance on "American Idol" (April 3). It is the best sales week for the set since the week ending Feb. 16, when it shifted a handful of copies more. On "Idol," the band played "Waiting for Superman," which peaked at No. 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January and reached No. 11 on the Adult Top 40 chart in March. -- Cyndi Lauper, "She's So Unusual" - No. 150 - Cyndi Lauper's classic debut album -- which spawned five top 30 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart -- returns to the list thanks to a new deluxe reissue. The album, which was first released in 1983 and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, was re-released on April 1 in both a standard and expanded deluxe edition. The standard set came with three new remixes, while the expanded edition is bolstered with additional demos, remixes, a b-side and live takes. Four of the album's singles reached the top 10 -- a historic chart feat at the time. Lauper became the first artist to earn four top 10 hits from a debut album, thanks to the chart success of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" (which peaked at No. 2), "Time After Time" (No. 1), "She Bop" (No. 3) and "All Through the Night" (No. 5). A fifth single, "Money Changes Everything," reached No. 27. -- The Hold Steady, "Teeth Dreams" - No. 176 - The rock band's latest album suffers the chart's largest percentage decline this week, falling by 79% in its second week (down to No. 176 from its No. 28 debut a week ago). The album sold a little under 3,000 copies in the week ending April 6 -- down from its 12,000 bow a week earlier.

I noticed that the Cyndi Lauper re-release has been lumped with the original, in terms of weeks on the chart. Has Billboard ever clarified if there's a rule on which deluxe editions chart separately, and which get lumped with the original?

^Might depend on what the label wants...
Elton's GYBR 40th was counted with the original:
53 Re-Entry 104 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Elton John 53
Then Michael Jackson's Bad 25th was counted separately from the original:
"Michael Jackson's 1987 album Bad re-enters The Billboard 200 at #23, while a deluxe 25th anniversary edition debuts at #46. The two albums sold a combined total of 27K copies"
